On 19 February 1945, the 5th Marine Amphibious Corps (consisting of the 3rd, 4th, and 5th Marine Divisions) landed on Iwo Jima (Sulphur Island). When the battle was over, 6821 American Marines, Sailors, and Soldiers , along with an estimated 20,000+ Japanese defenders had died. This was Americas first landing on what was considered traditional Japanese territory. It was the beginning of the end. In the following pages and ebooks, I hope to bring this battle to the reader, at a level of detail and scope I have not yet seen. This is the battle of IwoJima as described by the 3rd, 4th, and 5th Marine Divisions.
NEW GOOGLE EARTH kml files for the battle for Iwo Jima. You will need Google Earth loaded on your computer, there is a link is on the kml page for this. Summaries will be posted daily begining 19 Feb. Click here to go to the KML page
.
Until I get reorganized, the links below to the daily regimental summaries will open a new window in another site. I am spreading this information between three web sites right now. In time it will all be consolidated at iwojimahistory.com. Please keep this window open while pages from other sites are being viewed, as I do not have a complete set of links coming back here on all pages. My appologies for the inconvenience.
