The first company organized at Pendleton, South Carolina, for service in the. Confederate Army, which afterwards became Company "I", of the Fourth Regiment of South Carolina Volunteer Infantry, was commanded by Capt. Julius E. Shanklin, and was known as the "Fort Hill Guards."
