Martin Nicholson's Astronomical Hall of Shame

It is impossible for any one action (or inaction) to be enough to qualify somebody my Astronomical Hall of Shame. Qualifying requires the candidate to demonstrate a quite exceptional degree of hypocrisy, indolence, irrationality, rudeness or stupidity over a sustained period before they can get listed here.

There are a small number of people who make hundreds, and sometimes thousands, of newsgroup postings per month. Some post numerous minor variations of the same basic material while others tend to post material nothing whatsoever to do with the focus of their target newsgroup. In some cases debating issues with them can be quite fun because sooner rather than later the gaping flaws in their position become clear even to them!

Brad Guth - Now seems to almost given up posting about life on Venus but still very prone to writing scientific rubbish.

Lin Liangtai - Another person who seems to have greatly reduced the level of spamming inflicted on others.

Daniel Joseph Min - Sadly still a massive spammer of the astronomical newsgroups with his "political" and "religious" postings.

gb6724 - Another massive spammer of the astronomical newsgroups with, almost always, total rubbish.

Oriel36 - The third in the trio of previous inductees who has shown signs of reduced activity within the newsgroups. He might well not qualify for the Hall of Shame in 2010.

Pentcho Valev - If anything he get worse with his seemingly endless variations of anti-Eistein material.

John Greaves - There are encouraging signs that John has finally started to appreciate that his constant barrage of accusations and insults against a wide range of astronomical organisations and individual astronomers has damaged nobody but himself. He seems to be keeping a much lower profile than before although from time to time there are still sudden bursts of off-topic postings in his characteristic style.

My advice remains that the best way to deal with John Greaves is to ignore him and not to attempt to engage him in dialogue or debate.

John Greaves (plus numerous other identities such as advicegiven and Larkerer) - From March 2008 an increasing number of John's posts have been anonymous, possibly on legal advice, but his repetitious, sarcastic and verbose material is unmistakable. Unfortunately John lacks the resources to make any astronomical observations of his own and he has recently been expelled from or resigned from or been encouraged to leave at least three astronomical groups.

Nothing has happened to change the advice that the best way to deal with John Greaves is to ignore him and not to attempt to engage him in dialogue or debate. Since September 2008 he has been keeping a much lower profile than before.

The John Greaves Frequently Asked Questions

There are a small number of people who make hundreds, and sometimes thousands, of newsgroup postings per month. They tend to post material nothing whatsoever to do with the focus of their target newsgroup and some use a wide variety of different names in an attempt to escape newsgroup filters. Please remember that trying to argue a logical point with them or appealing to them to stop is like petting a porcupine- the porcupine won't appreciate the gesture and if you're sensible you will only try it once.

Brad Guth - Frequently writes about the moon landings and life on Venus but as far as I can see most, if not all, of what he posts seems to be scientific rubbish.

Lin Liangtai - Most, if not all, of what he posts on the analysis of Martian images seems to be totally unsubstantiated.

Daniel Joseph Min - A massive spammer of the astronomical newsgroups with his "political" and "religious" postings.

gb6724 - Another massive spammer of the astronomical newsgroups with, almost always, total rubbish.

Oriel36 - "Only" posts between 100 and 200 times per month. I have read his postings on planetary motions many times but I am no nearer understanding what point he is trying to make then when I first started the exercise!

Pentcho Valev - He posts endless variations of his anti Eistein material. He also has a long track record of similar misdeeds, to the extent that an FAQ was created about him!
