Algeria

Pyrograph on wood, 55 cm by 40 cm

This image shows how nomads used to live in Algeria.
Today there are fewer and fewer nomads living in tents
as the cities progressively swallow them.

Tomb of the Kings
by Abdulwahab Mihoub
Algeria

Pyrograph on wood, 80 cm by 60 cm

This is the burial crypt in Touggourt, Algeria where the kings of the city were buried in centuries past. It remains the same today.

Born and raised in the oasis city of Touggourt, Algerian Abdulwahab Mihoub started working in pyrography when he was 18 years old. He is self-taught. His work is original and mainly focuses on the traditional scenes, landscapes, people, and customs of the Sahara. He has been interviewed and shown on TV by the Algerian channel.

The artist's work and story are featured in the May-June 2002 issue of Pyrograffiti 17 in the Woodcarvers Online Magazine, linked here.

Notice of the artist's exhibit (in Algiers, July 2002) is featured in the July-Aug. 2002 issue, page 3, of Pyrograffiti 20 in the Woodcarvers Online Magazine, linked here. A detail of his work entitled Nomad Family is shown in that article, which also has a link to a critique of the exhibit and an article on the artist published in the El Watan Journal.

Notice of the artist's latest exhibits (in June 2003) are featured in the Sept.-Oct. 2003 issue, page 3, of Pyrograffiti 25 in the Woodcarvers Online Magazine, linked here. Another of his latest works (in addition to the first two displayed above) is shown in that article.
