KorEng is a Korean English dictionary for AbsoluteWord's RoadLingua running on a Palm OS PDA

KorEng is a basic compact dictionary intended for

Students of Korean
Travellers with a basic ability in Korean
Those who have to translate simple Korean text

The current version (1.8.04) of the dictionary has 1329 words and occupies only ~35kb. The words are chosen primarily from a basic tertiary course to be those needed by travellers and new students. The dictionary will be steadily expanded. Please check back for updates.

Requirements

A Palm OS PDA. Should run on anything that supports CJKOS or Diopen and RoadLingua. Has been tested on a Palm M505 and a Sony CLIE NZ90.

AbsoluteWords's RoadLingua. Suggest the most recent version (1.7) although should run on earlier versions. It is strongly recommended to use the larger font for display for ease of viewing the Hangul characters and the vertically split display mode. For RoadLingua see http://www.absoluteword.com.

CJKOS with the Korean font installed to the Palm. For CJKOS see http://www.dyts.com. I have developed and tested this dictionary with CJKOS.

Diopen also implements Korean fonts and input on the Palm. I am told by one user that this dictionary also works well with Diopen. For Diopen see http://www.diotek.co.kr.

Details

Translation - one or more English equivalents are given. Where a word has multiple translations the various different translations are given, preceded by a number (1.). Where there are essentially different shades of meaning to a particular translation these different shades are given separated by slashes (/). An exhaustive set of possible translations has not been given. The translations given are chosen to be those most important for the intended users of this dictionary.

Romanisation / Pronunciation – Romanisation is provided for every word (if required) - eg "eonni" in the screenshot above. Romanisation is a system of representing the Hanguel characters in western script. The characters used are related to the sounds, they can greatly assist as a guide to pronunciation, but are not sufficiently close to be very useful for pronunciation unless you learn the language properly. They are also useful to remind new students of Korean which sounds go with which characters. The appendix to the manual discusses this further and a very good explanation of this can be found at The Korean Ministry of Culture and Tourism. The main dictionary ('KE-Mod') follows the modern rules for romanisation. However, as these are relatively new and many people use the older McCune-Reischauer System, an alternative version ('KE-McR') based on this system is provided, however check the manual regarding the symbols used.

English Korean - Based on the same collection of words English Korean dictionaries ('EK-Mod' and 'EK-McR') are provided. However note that a more extensive English Korean dictionary is already available from Absolute Word; currently as Freeware. The main advantages of the version here are that they are compact (~35kb compared with ~1.5Mb) and the Korean romanisation is given (more useful to English speakers), rather than English pronunciation (more useful to Korean speakers).
