Celtic Universal Morale Charts

These Charts are designed for use in creating most tribal and specifically Celtic tribal units. It is something of a unit generator.

The charts are grouped by formation type starting with the lightest armored moving to the more heavily armored. First infantry then mounted units.

How these charts work is simple. Each list depicts the number of figures in a unit. Then each chart shows the FV or figure value. "Result" is the value reached by multiplying the number of figures in the unit by the FV when creating units (pages 4 & 5 in the rulebook). "Plus UV" is part of the unit creation equation. The UV is the unit value assigned according to formation type. "Morale" is the result of all multiplication and addition used in the unit creation equation. Morale is any units specific value. I don’t like the term point value and have both here and in the rules have generally avoided the use of this term.

Now let me explain the title in the Light Infantry chart. Note the parenthesis. Li is the common abbreviation for light infantry and it includes their normal "Order". Order is the formation a unit normally assumes. Order implies a specific battlefield function. Li or Open Order implies a skirmish function. In Classical Hack units are permitted to assume any Order they would historically use. This means even heavy infantry (Close Order) can take up Open or Loose Order. Units doing so retain their normal movement speed.

Lets take the first numeric line beneath the all ready explained title line. The first number is the number of figures in the unit. Regardless of the number of figures in a unit their FV or Figure Value remains constant as all units normally have the same type of figure in the unit. I’ll get something up about mixed units at a later time. The UV or Unit Value also remains constant. The Unit’s Morale Value, here shown simply as "Morale" is also the unit’s value when considering creating your army should you wish to base your army on the traditional point system approach.

I have shown units sizes starting with the basic number of figures a single stand by order type. By this I mean that for example a unit of Li has bases of two figures each. That’s just the common way to organize and base your figures. In Classical Hack players are permitted to play games with units of one stand. This accommodates players that do not have a lot of figures or who simply like playing with one or two stand units. This method can be just as much fun as playing larger size units of 4 or more stands each.
