Chow Rescue of No. VA does not adopt out of their immediate area. This is because we can not appropriately perform inspections, etc., nor maintain proper contact with the families that adopt the rescues.

All our rescue Chows are either neutered or spayed and shots are up to date. If major surgery is necessary for non give-up Chows, we have normally taken care of it beforehand...our fees, in the form of a donation, are determined by what we have invested in each animal medically, never to exceed $350 on any one animal even if we've invested more unless the adoptive family is willing to cover the costs.

Because all of the moneys for medical expenses come out of our personal finances, we do not have the funds available to care for Chows being given up by their families to us. Consequently, if anyone is looking for help from us in placement of their Chows, we ask that you make sure all shots are up to date, heartworm testing has been done and preventative being given, and spay/neuter has been completed. We understand that there are times when there is a particular hardship encountered by some families, and we try to work with them the best we can.

If you are intetrested in a puppy, we rarely get puppies. When we do, we have a rather long waiting list. Puppies normally go to families that have already adopted older Chows from us and have exhibited the ability to properly raise and work with a Chow, or people who have had Chows in the past and shown that they can do the same. It is very rare that we ever adopt puppies to first time Chow owners.

You will find contact information at the end of the description of many of the Chows available. That means those Chows are not in our immediate rescue program. They are Chows that are in that particular state that we have posted for someone else as a courtesy. If you should be interested in any of those Chows, please contact those people as we can not give you any information or help you in adopting those particular Chows. As for adoption of Chows in Chow Rescue of No. VA's rescue program, it is our policy (to read more on our policies, go to http://www.geocities.com/pualanim/policies.html) that we do not adopt out of our area.

Alohilani Raven: Alohilani (Brightness of Heaven) Raven had been purchased as a 6 week old pup. After having her for a month, the family decided that they could not deal with the responsibilities of raising a puppy, so they were going to take her to the shelter. One of our rescue associates lived near the people who had Raven, and asked that they allow her to have Raven rather than take her to the shelter. Our associate called us and asked if we could take her into the system. So, we took the little girl who was just the sweetest lil one you could wish to meet. We took her to our adoption days until we found her a home. However, due to illness, her new family has had to request we find her a new home. Raven is still in the chewing stage, needs obedience training, likes to jump on you when she is excited, and barks at you when she wants attention. She is a playful, active, loving, affectionate baby who needs a home that will give her tons of love and attention. This is a picture of her. (posted Sept. 23, 99)

Hannah: Red, approx. 3-5 yr. old female. Very laid back, sweet girl. She was found running loose in Baltimore. A man found her, gave her to a family who decided they didn't really want her , so they gave her back. Hannah is missing her top front teeth...as though she'd been chewing on rocks. You can see pictures of her here. (contact Marian at 703-866-4149) (posted January 28, 2000)

Chelsea: Red, approx. 5 yr. old female. Chelsea had belonged to a family who'd had her since she was 5 weeks old. The family had moved to a home where the landlord would not allow them to keep her, so they took her to the father's home where she was kept outdoors chained up to a tree for at least six months. Finally, knowing they could not keep her, the rescue associate of ours they had called to ask for help in finding Chelsea a new home decided it was in Chelsea's best interest to get her physically into the rescue system. Because she was so terribly matted, her coat was cut to the bare minimum. Unfortunately, since she'd not been kept on preventative, she tested positive for Heartworm and had to be treated for that before she could be spayed. Chelsea was raised with a young boy who is now six, but had not been exposed to other dogs or cats. She is a sweet lady who just wants some love and care. You can see pictures of her here. (contact Marian at 703-866-4149) (posted January 28, 2000)

Rio: Black, approx. 9 mo. old male at the time of original posting. You can see pictures of him here. (contact Marian at 703-866-4149) (posted January 28, 2000)

Panda: Lost and found red male. To learn about him, go to Panda's page. (Posted 20 August 2001)

Big Red: Keysville, VA: 4/8/01 a vet removed the left front leg of a red chow in bad condition. The dog is 10 months old and was hit by a car when 12 wks. old. The owners did not treat the leg that was fractured until now, which had literally rotted. He was covered in ticks, so much so that they had to be picked off with clamps to even clear a site for removal of the leg, he had had no vaccinations until the day of surgery. "Big red," as they chose to call him since his owners have not even named him, is not going to get the care he will need post surgery and is in bad need of a good home; he is a very well behaved dog with a seemingly good temperment. If you are interested in him, please call Dr. Rachel Swann @ 804-736-9032, or Joan Taylor at 804-372-0924 or e-mail at fethrbrain@aol.com. (Posted 9 March 2001)

Charley: Chow/Shepard mix female. Born 3/96, she has been in several homes in her short life where she was not given time, attention or love. She was originally boarded in a kennel since Sept 8 where her rescuer would go most days at lunch and take her to the park. It was observed that she travels very well back in December when she was transported to be tested for a DDADE dog (but unfortunately she would not work for the one food they use in training). She is very energetic and will need exercise &/or room to run. She does well in the kennel. She has alot of potential. Charley had been placed back in March, but the man who adopted her has found a life change puts him in a situation in which he can no longer keep her. It was hoped that would be her last home since it was her 4th home in her 3 yrs of life through no fault of her own. As she is a bit rambunctious, she probably should not go to a home with small children or other dogs unless male & laid back. Contact information: Tammy 804-832-2152. This is a picture of Charley.
