2. While we do not find such phrases as "the gospel of reconciliation" or "the gospel of the mystery" in Scripture, both of these great messages are nevertheless presented as good news and are even designated as gospels. See Col, 1:21-23, Romans 16:25.
3. Not "the nations."
4. With Matthias replacing Judas (Acts 1:20).
5. There is no warrant for making this read: "the gospel to the circumcision," although even this would not alter the essential meaning of Gal. 2:7.
6. Though the blessing of Abraham now comes on the Gentiles through Christ (Gal. 3:14,16).
7. Rom. 1:16 by no means contradicts this. The difficulty is that some, taking this verse out of its context, suppose that Paul here teaches that the gospel should still go to the Jew first, whereas the whole passage (Rom. 1:13-16) is a defense of his going to the Gentiles, the gospel having first gone to the Jew. Since God's good news is now all of grace, no one is first. This will be further discussed in a later chapter.
8. Some years ago there was a Jewish paper dealer from whom we bought paper in lots for the publication of the Berean Searchlight. One day as we were "discussing" the price of a case of paper, he exclaimed: "If you get me down any lower I'll go bankrupt!" I replied, humorously, that if the time ever came that I could get the better of a son of Abraham in business I would consider myself a good businessman, adding: "Say, Sam, are you and I blood relatives?" He seemed rather startled at this question, but replied with a twinkle in his eye: "No, I am a son of Abraham." I pressed him further, and said: "I know, but tell me, are you at all related to Adam?" At this he scratched his head and hesitated a few moments. He knew the Old Testament quite well. Finally he replied: "You got me that time!" He knew we both were sons of Adam.
9. Note: "Things under the earth" are excluded here.
10. The Authorized Version unfortunately renders the prefix au (co- or joint) in three different ways in this one verse.
11. Note: Here Israel is no longer considered "nigh" to God.
12. Gal. 3:8 says: "And the Scripture foreseeing," not foretelling.
13. Although ordinances and signs were at first recognized as part of the program which was then passing away.
