In December 1993 a Christian community project was started to improve the quality of life for the town’s “street children”. In Aliwal North more and more children try to flee from poverty, unemployment, abuse and insecurity caused by family disintegration.  Ironically they only find themselves exposed to hunger, cold, drugs, sexual abuse and an uncertain future.  Most end up hardened criminals if there is no intervention.    The Project, now called Project Life!, established a shelter called “Miracle House” in 1996.  To children who come directly off the streets or who are referred by Social Services Miracle House seeks to provide a loving, secure home environment.  Strong emphasis is placed on developing whole, healthy children and teenagers who will grow into confident adults contributing positively to a better society.  Apart from meeting the most basic needs of the children, they also start attending school once in the shelter.  We want to influence and equip these children for life – not just giving them food and shelter.   The ultimate aim is to re-unite the children with their families.  That is, however, not always possible because of factors like abuse, extreme poverty, etc.
