Following are photos of the damage Screech did to my right index finger in two of his attacks
Please keep in mind that these are only here as an example of the damage a rat can inflict and a reminder of why it is so important to not breed from rats with temperament problems. I do not hold the rat responsible for his actions as this would be the equivalent of blaiming a person for their genetic afliction. Any rat with a temperament problem caused by breeding is the fault of the breeder, never the rat. WE make the decision, not them.
The first bite, just above my knuckle. He ripped me up a bit on this one.
Another example of damage from rat bites - two puncture wounds on the underside (you can see the one from Screech still healing further down the finger) and one puncture on the top (though this one was obtained when trying to rescue a baby rat from under a stand at a pet store! Once again, I don't blame the rat at all and probably could have avoided it if I'd remembered that it wasn't one of my rats and didn't know me!). This one was particularly dangerous as an injury because it happened on the knuckle itself. It became quickly infected, despite the fact that I was already on medication for the existing bite from Screech, and swelled considerably, as is shown in the bottom photos. It had to be watched closely as an sign of deterioration would have indicated an infection in the joint itself which could have been very nasty. Had it not improved overnight I could have ended up in hospital. Just remember, those teeth don't just work on our skin, and a rat with poor temperament from breeding is OUR fault and could injure other rats! If you really look, you can even see where I bled all over my jeans! (I bled all over the shop floor too!)
The second bite, between the two knuckles. Here he bit down twice on the same spot.
Showing the swelling after only a few hours
