35th Infantry Regiment was organized at Atlanta, Georgia, and mustered into Confederate service at Richmond, Virginia, in October, 1861. The men were recruited in the counties of Troup, Haralson, Bartow, Walton, Chattooga, Harris, and Gwinnett. It was first assigned to General French's Brigade and in April, 1862, had a force of 545 effectives. Later the regiment served under Generals Pettigrew, J.R. Anderson, and E.L. Thomas, Army of Northern Virginia. It fought in numerous battles from Seven Pines to Cold Harbor, then was active in the long Petersburg siege south of the James River and the Appomattox Campaign. The unit sustained 70 casualties at Second Manassas, 89 at Fredericksburg, and 33 at Chancellorsville. Of the 331 engaged at Gettysburg, more than twenty-five percent were killed or wounded. It surrendered with 15 officers and 121 men. The field officers were Colonels Bolling H. Holt and Edward L. Thomas; Lieutenant Colonels Gustavus A. Bull, W.H. McCullons, and Edward L. Thomas; and Majors William L. Groves, J.T. McElvany, and Lee A.J. Williams.

Clay County Courior-1910: "Potts Dial purchased the 80-acre farm of Uncle Sam Wheetley, paying $2200 cash. This is a good little farm and Mr. Dial is a hustler from early morn until dewey eve.-Palatka"

Clay County Courior obituary: Dyal, Herman (Potts D.)-Page 1, Aug. 10, 1923 - "Herman (Potts D.) Dyal, a prominent farmer of Palatka vicinity, died after a brief illness in Poplar Bluff hospital last Wednesday morning. His remains en route to his home, were brought through Corning that afternoon, accompanied by several friends and relatives. He was about 40 years of age, and leaves a widow and 5 young children."
Medical Notes: Malaria used to be a problem in Arkansas. Although anti-malarial drugs and residual house spraying have abated the problem, the mosquito species that transmitted the disease are still found in the state.

Herman married Rose Melinda Miller , daughter of John Thornton Miller and Sarah Melinda Mulholland , in 1903 in Oklahoma Territory. Rose was born on 8 Oct 1882 in Clay Co., Arkansas, died on 2 Apr 1951 in Arkansas, at age 68, and was buried in Black Cemetery; Clay Co., Arkansas. The cause of her death was Heart Attack. Another name for Rose was Rosa or Rosie.
Marriage Notes: Herman and Rosa eloped in the Oklahoma Territory. Rosa's mother, Sarah Miller(Mulholland) was against the marriage. It is said that after the marriage they had only 25 cents.
Medical Notes: Rosa had Chronic Myocarditis for two years until she was hospitalized for acute cardiac failure. She spent the next 7 days in the hospital until succoming to a heart attack.

Septicemia is a serious, life-threatening infection that gets worse very quickly. It arises from infections throughout the body.
According to his Death Certificate, Carl had sores on his mouth and tongue contributing to the infection. (caruncle adhesions)
