That the Supreme Being is the same One God of all religions or spiritual paths. While we may use different names, we can find harmony.
That healing herbs come from this Supreme Being for our use.
To understand and accept that healing help can be sent in a variety of forms, from alternative to allopathic.
That when open to life changes that are in tune with the Creators natural health principles, they can increase opportunities to help one realign and rejuvenate the health of the body, mind, soul.
That healing is not a gift for the few, but can be learned by anyone who holds a desire to learn it.
That all men AND women are to be treated equally, and all are spiritual brothers and sisters. (Of course, husband and wife would not be considered brother and sister.)
That God is the seed-giving father of all living entities, the sustaining energy of all life, of all nature, and of the cosmic universe.
ETC.
As a person who has lived in renounced conditions, and living my life as a monk (nun if you want to get technical), I have put together some of the knowledge and services I learned and developed along my path which can help others, and take care of myself as well, for a suggested donations for some services (sliding scale when truthfully required), and free for different, other services. Here on my site folks can locate help for things from migraine headaches to learning the art of Reiki (a laying on of hands type of spiritual healing). Have fun! Be well.

. . Once upon a time there was a wise man who used to go to the ocean to do his writing.
He had a habit of walking on the beach before he began his work.
One day he was walking along the shore. As he looked down the beach, he saw a human figure moving like a dancer.
He smiled to himself to think of someone who would dance to the day. So he began to walk faster to catch up.
As he got closer, he saw that it was a young man and the young man wasn't dancing, but instead he was reaching down to the shore, picking up something and very gently throwing it into the ocean.
As he got closer he called out, "Good morning! What are you doing?" The young man paused, looked up and replied, "Throwing starfish in the ocean."
"I guess I should have asked, why are you throwing starfish in the ocean?"
"The sun is up and the tide is going out. And if I don't throw them in they'll die."
"But, young man, don't you realize that there are miles and miles of beach and starfish all along it. You can't possibly make a difference!"
The young man listened politely. Then bent down, picked up another starfish and threw it into the sea, past the breaking waves and said- "It made a difference for that one."
There is something very special in each and every one of us. We have all been gifted with the ability to make a difference.
And if we can become aware of that gift, we gain through the strength of our visions the power to shape the future.
We must each find our starfish. And if we throw our stars wisely and well, the world will be blessed.

. DANDELION (Taraxacum spp.) is that weed that gets sprayed with all those *killer* pesticides and keeps coming back. Hooray! Dandelion always wins! Why, then, would we package up dandelion seeds to sell for planting in a garden? Because it is well worth growing, that's why. We need to stop trying to kill this jewel and start harvesting it. The tender leaves can be used as a spring tonic and the long tap roots can be used raw or roasted in teas (decoctions) for a myriad of aliments. Children like to make bouquets and garlands for all their favorite people with its flowers. .
The main benefit of this great herb are exerted upon the function of the liver. Dandelion has the capacity to clear obstructions and stimulate and aid the liver to eliminate toxins from the blood. The root is also useful for clearing obstructions of the spleen, pancreas, gallbladder, bladder and kidneys. It is of tremendous benefit to the stomach and intestines. In Chinese medicine this condition would be considered as "liver attacking spleen-pancreas," which refers to an imbalance of liver and pancreatic enzymes necessary for digestion. Thus it would seem that dandelion root helps to balance these enzymes which simultaneously benefit digestion, assimilation and elimination. Even the serious cases of hepatitis have rapidly been cured, sometimes within a week, by use of dandelion tea taken in cupful doses four to six times daily and of course, a light, easily digested diet of vegetable broths, rice and mung beans..
Dandelion root is a SPECIFIC for hypoglycemia, but it may need to be combined with other tonic herbs such as ginseng and a little ginger for maximum benefit. If in pill or tincture form, it is not required that all these herbs are in one formula, as too many herbs in one pill or tincture often result of not enough of anything. However, combing some (wisely) works. . Dandelion can also be used to remedy recent onset of diabetes, especially when combined with huckleberry leaf. It also helps reduce high blood pressure, thus aiding the action of the heart. Dandelion can be helpful in the treatment of anemia because it supplies useful nutritive minerals. The leaf is one of the finest diuretics, and contains potassium unlike other diuretics that deplete the system of potassium. Thus dandelion leaf can be taken for fluid retention, cystitis, nephritis, weight loss and hepatitis..

. . There are so many diseases out there these days, along with weight gain. Certainly eating a healthy diet and staying away from polluted areas play an important part toward staying healthy. However, there still is so much sickness in the world with too little attention given to the important role of breath. As one person put it, "you're not starving for food, you're starving for air." Many are oxygen deprived and don't know it. Food requires sufficient oxygen to help break it down and process it properly. If that air is depleted, how can it break it down? Thus, we gain weight. . Air fans fire. When Ayurveda explains digestion, the talk is about the "fire" of digestion, known as Agni. For these reasons and others, one cause of weight gain and disease is oxygen deprivation. . That's part of it. Another part is an invisible force within the oxygen that is an ethereal components of its own. It is this element that is more difficult to see (though not impossible). It is called prana or chi or mana, and so on. Actually many cultures have tapped into it and simply call it by a different name, but it is all the exact same energy. . Without enough oxygen there is not enough prana circulating throughout the body. Prana or chi is the life force. When it becomes decreased, everything starts to follow suit until body parts begin to breakdown, get weak, sickly, and if left untreated, death. To strengthen and heal the body, an increase of prana is needed. . Some point out that since they can't see the prana, therefore it is not real, does not exist. However, you can't see gravity and it keeps right on working, with or without your belief. :-) In addition, had we informed the folks of yesteryear that one day they would own a box in their home and it would show them real pictures which come form far away, all of which ride through the air or air waves, they would have locked us up as crazy. . Currently, due to Kirlian photography, the existence of the aura has now been proven. And prana can be seen by the naked eye if one wants to take the time out to learn it. It's not hard to learn, just takes time. Therefore we can understand that it's not a good idea to throw the baby out with the bathwater and think that because we can't immediately see something it does not exist. In truth, there is much all around us that we cannot see, or cannot see without training. . In order to draw in more prana and increase health benefits, one must learn deep abdominal breathing. Most folks are shallow breathers and chest breathers. Watch a baby breath, the breath goes right into the abdomen first. Due to our hectic lifestyle we often become tense, which in turn reduces how much oxygen and prana that can enter our lungs, our very cells. The lung has five lobes. Shallow breathers use only two, basically. Deep breathing brings all five into action and we therefore receive more oxygen and prana, health is often increased after one practices some form of deep breathing daily. . Another point to consider about chest breathing and poor health is that we find nerve receptors in the upper chest which can trigger the body's "fight or flight" mechanism and release fighting type of hormones (adrenaline for example!). When engaging in physical exercise this is the part of the lungs that are used, the two chest/ upper lobes. No WONDER we all hate to exercise. :-) Our body thinks someone is coming at us with a two-by-four. Interestingly enough, when we utilize deep breathing and send the breath into our abdomens, it has the opposite effect and actually *calms* us. That is why Hatha Yoga or Tai Chi have have tremendous success rates despite the fact that you are not "working out." .. Here is the first, most basic, yet highly effective breathing method that can help you flood your cells with oxygen and prana. Its a (slight) variation of the "Complete Breath." You can do this standing, sitting in half lotus or with both feet grounded on the floor, or lying down. For beginners lying down is recommended in order to facilitate receiving awareness that might be missed in the other positions. . Breath exercise (or prana yoga) always start on the exhalation. So grab yourself a breath before officially beginning. . NOTE: Never do any form of exercise without first discussing it with your doctor. All disclaimers apply. . COMPLETE BREATH . 1-Get in position (sit, stand or lay down). The position you select is not as important as is keeping the back straight and aligned, though it is recommended when first learning this to try it lying down. Lying down is more effective for the beginner, as you can look and see if you stomach is actually rising on that inbreath or if the inbreath is going to your chest, in which case you would see your chest expanding instead. After getting this down-pat, later you can sit or stand when practicing, and when standing, can practice it anywhere, even in the grocery line, maybe with a few alterations. :-)
2- Inhale through your nose (not mouth). Try to tighten the back of your throat and make the "Darth Vader" sound. :-) This will help you control your breath better. Take a long, slow, and deep breath, first gently pushing the oxygen and prana into your abdomen, which you will see rise if you are doing this correctly. Count to 4 on the inhale. Take your time, no rush. If lying down you should see your abdomen rise. If you don't see that, you are not sending enough oxygen into the abdomen. Practice. . 3-Next, lock that breath inside for an equal count of four, because the longer oxygen and prana remain inside the body, the more it can bathe the cells. (Holding the breath to a point of discomfort is not the idea. By the time the oxygen gets to that point it is not beneficial anymore so you might as well exhale, but in time can build up and increase this. Don't worry too much about the numbers/time.) . 4-Exhale to the count of 8 (or twice as long as the inhale), through your mouth, and starting to release the air in reverse. That is, first let out the air from your throat, chest and so on down until you get to your abdomen which should be last. When you are finally to the abdomen, squeeeeeeeeeeeeze it and visualize germs, bacteria, pollution, Paint thinner <g> anything you need to detox from, visualize it leaving your body as you squeeze it out. Blow the dirt, germs, chemicals and toxins right out of your mouth. . 5-Breathe in again, this time (optional) visualizing the prana or a light or an auric color being inhaled along with the oxygen as you breath in. You don't have to believe in auric colors or prana and so on for this to work. Like gravity they are real, and they work with or without your belief.
6-When you decide you are done, slowly open your eyes, allow yourself a little time to "wake up," and you will feel rejuvinated. You can start out a few minutes each day and gradually, patiently, build onto that. Practice daily for best results. . As pointed out previously, Kirlan photography has proven the existence of the arua by taking pictures of it. There may be scientific proof of prana as well. I simply have not looked into it. I don't need to. For the curious, do the research. Anyway, with some simple training coupled with patience, prana can be seen. Knowing this may make it easier to include visualization. Though I would like to mention that if you are not comfortable with visualization, don't do it. It is not a required part of the Complete Breath and is simple a fun, healing addition. One that works but simply is not a requirement. In that case, simply repeat proper inhalation and exhalation until you wish to quit (#6). . You can learn many various forms of breathing and they are all wonderful, but if you only could do one daily for health, IMHO this would be the one. Its simple and therefore easy to maintain, its effective, sends oxygen to the cells of the body, it works, can be done anywhere, anytime and with a few minor adjustments, no one will even know. You could be standing in some line and deep breathe. While everyone else is getting irritable by the wait, you can be getting relaxed and healing. . However, never practice deep inhalation if you are in a polluted area (and if you live in one, closing the windows as opposed to opening them may be good under such circumstances), or around toxic petroleum and so on. You want to make sure it is healing oxygen you are bringing deep into your lungs and not toxic waste, chemicals, pollution, etc. . Reiki is also a way to harness the prana or chi. (ADDITION ~ Scroll or click to next article for updated and/or extra info about Migraines.).
SEE DISCLAIMER BELOW
This decline in the nerve cell function begins in the stem of the brain, and is usually from a drop in serotonin levels. In order to experience migraine pain, there must be a transfer of that message through these nerve cells by the neurotransmitter serotonin, which transfers the messages from the brain stem upward to the thalamus and hypothalamus. This is significant because the thalamus is a central figure in pain production and perception for the body. Serotonin's job usually is to prevent dilation of 5-HT receptors. That would reduce the body's ability to sense pain.
Serotonin is released when the
designated neurons send an electrical impulse to the ends of the receptors. For migraines it is the 5-HT 1D receptors. They release the serotonin
into a synapse - the tiny gap between neurons. These minute secretions let other
chemicals know when to fire or when to discontinue firing. This controls
other nerve impulses.
If you know that your serotonin has dropped, and it would be a good idea to get it tested by your doctor to make sure, then phenylpropanolamine or tyrosine amino acids have, in some cases, been reputed to raise serotonin levels.
5-HTP is derived from the Griffonia simplicifolia seeds, a West African medicinal plant, is also reputed to raise serotonin levels. Though I have not had the time to research this one.
ST. JOHN'S WORT increases the availability of serotonin in the synapses (junctions between neurons) by blocking their reuptake, but also increases the availability of norepinephrine which increases energy and alertness (some need that - some don't), and also increases dopamine (ditto). It's important to find out what your specific needs are.
Now St. Johns Wort is often combined in herbal formulas with Griffonia simplicifolia seeds. Maybe the addition of these seeds get a handle on the dopamine. I don't know. Though I do know that there are
cautions for taking St. Johns Wort. None that are so horrible, but one must be aware of them as follows:
In studies involving St. Johns Wort of 300mg 3 times daily (n=3250), the most commonly reported side effects were gastrointestinal symptoms (0.6%), allergic reactions (0.5%), and fatigue (0.4%). Anecdotal reports in grazing animals suggest that SJW may be photosensitivity. While St John's Wort may have some MAOI activity, few reports have surfaced. As a safeguard, patients should still be cautioned
against consumption of tyramine-containing foods (ie. aged cheese, aged or cured meat, sauerkraut,
fava beans, soy sauce and some other soybean preparations).
Of
course, one should not laugh in the midst of a migraine headache nor even
if you feel one coming on. Not at all. However at other times if we laugh
we help to train our body to begin to function differently, more
healthfully, as well as start to respond in less stressful ways to life.
May even learn to let more roll off our back or to go with the flow,
if the flow is going the workable direction of course. :-)
Norman Cousins is famous for using laughter to help him recover and heal
from a horrid disease. You may be able to find his book in your library if
interested.
CALCIUM
is needed for proper absorption of Magnesium. Calcium is also helpful for
relaxation, similar to drinking a cup of hot milk, though different in
some aspects. Anyhow, the point is, its relaxing. I read of one woman who
took it right before bed and it helped her sleep. Previously she was
having trouble dozing off. However, calcium decreases the absorbency of
other vitamins, herbs, prescriptions, etc; so try not to take anything
else with it (except magnesium). Actually, that one lady's idea of taking
it at night is a good one.
* ESSENTIAL OIL OF PEPPERMINT: I read a wonderful testimonial how one man, who could get no relief from anything medical for his severe headaches, gained tremendous relief when applying the (cooling) essential oil of peppermint to his head. Now, essential oils can be dangerous if used without some basic study, especially if they get into the eyes they might cause blindness! However, use your intelligence and do the needful. This man found out by putting a few drops of the oil on a hankie and carrying it around in a baggie, if he felt an attacking coming on, just taking it out and smelling it would bring relief! If it was too far gone he applied it to his forehead and lying down to rest, though use of gloves or an applicator is highly recommended because as hard as we try, if something touched our fingers we tend to get it in our eyes or somewhere sensitive so please take all precautions. Also, this could be put in the foot bath described above, to increase its effect.
* HOT vs. COLD: Some have found they need heat to get relief from a migraine headache. Others have found they need cold. And yet some find both have helped depending on what the migraine dictates. So if heat is not doing it for you, try a cold ice pack.
* CONSCIOUS RELAXATION: If having chronic, repetitive attacks of a migraine, it's a good idea to learn conscious relaxation and practice it regularly. Daily at first, because when you know this you can notice a migraine coming on much sooner and nip it in the bud. I will write more detail about this at a later date, but for the moment here is a summary.
Conscious relaxation involves lying down or sitting in a very relaxed position, and helping yourself to go into a relaxed state of mind. After that, one is to start focusing at the feet and gradually working all the way up the body, taking notice of what muscle is tight and then releasing it. That's all and it's very simple, but it needs to be done regularly at first to get a feel for it.
First one is to notice if the feet and toes are curled up or arched, or if they are not. If they are you now have the opportunity to release that. Next up to ankle and calf muscles. Are they tight? Release them. Do this all the way up the body including the shoulders and head. When completed, stay there and rest in that very relaxed state so you can heal as well as, you will enjoy it! :-) After a few minutes, or whenever you want, gradually wake yourself up fully.
Another way to do this is to tighten and release. In a fully relaxed and comfortable position, with mind at ease and relaxed (try adding some music that assists relaxation), tighten and curl your toes and arches (but not so tight you cramp!), then release. Next tighten calves, release. Tighten thighs, release. Tighten abdomen, release. You get the idea. This helps one to tune in more to the way their body feels when tense/tight, and how it feels when relaxed/released. When done stay there and enjoy the much needed rest. After a few minutes, or whenever you want, gradually wake yourself up fully.
R-E-L-A-X ~ Sometimes we can do conscious relaxation, sometimes we can't. One way toward prevention is to get in the habit of regularly checking in with your back and shoulder muscles. In our stressed out, fast paced society many of us are walking around with our ears and necks connected. Check in with your body and see if your ears are too high up and tight. If so, all you need to do is tell them to get back where they belong. :-) Relax your neck to do this, and also the shoulder muscles. It is not uncommon for a headache to start in the BACK muscles and not be felt, therefore remaining untreated it can work its way up the neck, shoulders and eventually our ears are out of proximity to where they should be. This is a sign of tension and will, I repeat WILL bring on a headache if nothing is done about it. Now you have something you can do.
DEEP BREATHING: I can't emphasize enough how important it is to breath right and to breathe deeply. A lack of oxygen is often a trigger for a headache. Rather than go into great detail here, I have all ready explained the importance of correct breathing in my article: "Breath and Healing," above, including a breathing exercise too. Please read it. a

With the passage of time and therefore more research, I've come across even more ideas, suggestions, and possible help. What doesn't work for one person may work for another and visa versa. This is why I add this, so hopefully each individual will find *something* here to help relieve their pain! With that said, below are more helpful hints.
ALLERGIES
can bring on a
sinus infection which in turn can
cause a migraine.
This had been one of my biggest problems for quite a while. You need
to figure out your triggers before anything. You CAN get a handle over
these, if you take the time to find out which specific are your personal, individual allergy
'triggers.' You may
initially try on your own but if that doesn't work, see someone who
specializes in this area because allergies can be very hard to
discover and uncover. Whereas for them, that's what they DO. Also once
you find out, one helpful treatment free of drugs is called
Desensitization. One method of this is N.A.E.T. - a form of
acupuncture but specific for allergies. However, even the regular
Allergists use Desensitization techniques. Though you may have to
shop around and specifically ask if they do. HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE ~ Sometimes high blood pressure can bring on a headache - often. Check it out at one of those super market machines. Garlic is reputed to lower blood pressure.
<p>
Also, one time I had a Migraine and though they have decreased over the years, it still was a Migraine! I took everything natural, finally resorting to 'Excedrin' (which always had worked for me) but nothing! Not a rebounding problem either. Later I ate a handful of peanuts and some whole wheat bread. Bingo! 80% of that Migraine left me! And this is one of the most perfect combinations for protein. Or specifically beans with wheat. Meat protein is something I'm strongly against, as it will create more troubles than it will help. Try some bean soup with a little cayenne, and toast a piece of whole wheat bread. You just may be surprised at how powerful this simple remedy can be! I know I was.
DIABETES:
Just as low sugar can bring on a headache, so can diabetes. Get your
blood sugar levels checked out medically! This is known as a silent
disease and many have it without knowing.
MORE ON B VITS ~ Be careful with the cheaper B vitamins, especially those based on yeast. I'm not a follower of one aspect of so-called "Yeast connection" where it's propounded that "dehydrated" (dead!) yeast could possibly "grow" into Candida. However, when it comes to the cheaper yeast based vitamins, some have reported that it caused them PAIN. This has also been confirmed by Dr. Seymour of the Diamond Headache Clinic.
UPDATE: Having learned about the potency of "orthomolecular" vitamins and minerals, I now try my best to use mostly those, aiming for only those. They cross the brain barrier easier, are easier digested (therefore do their job better), and have various extra benefits, including mental balance. They're a little costly, but to think of all I bought that ended up down the drain, didn't work, etc., it's worth it. I also have been able to take many others off my shelf now!
VITAMIN B 6- And yet another B vitamin! :-) B 6 is important because it "stablizes" serotonin. But not to take over 200 mg daily. That pretty much sums it up. (For now.)
FLAX OIL
~ One cause of Migraines may be a deficiency in essential fatty acids.
Unsaturated fats required in the diet are called essential fatty and
include linoleic acid (an omega-6 oil), found in corn, beans, and some
nuts
and seeds, and alpha linolenic acid (an omega-3 oil), best type is found
in flaxseed, and walnuts. To get a concentrated dose though, take the oil
of flax.
This can either be added in with other oil for a part of salad dressing
(it has
a fishy taste), or can be found in capsules. Or some just take a
spoonful and
get it over with. :-) In any case, patience my friends, as with
anything else
natural as well as preventative, it requires time. Three
months, and three
times daily. However, some have even been able to reduce, and in some cases, omit their meds. Sorry, don't know the dose.
Main points from trial: By the end of their four-month trial 61.3% of the patients achieved a minimum of a 50% reduction in frequency of their Migraine attacks. NOTE: It requires time to achieve optimum results. Data from the study suggest 5-12 weeks to achieve more than a 50% reduction. Coenzyme Q10 is effective for both Classic Migraine (with aura) and Common Migraine (without aura).
<p>
--- Then there are
the other types of migraines, though all ready mentioned on this site I'd like to
elaborate a bit. I went out of my way to avoid all these well known 'triggers'
to no avail. Zero. They simply had nothing to do with my
migraine (which may NOT be the case for yours). For
that matter, I had been misdiagnosed as a Sinus infection (though I had that
"also"). In time I found out my headaches were weather
related.
For absorption purposes,
don't take after, or while eating protein foods; though its ok to take
when eating carbs. When eating other proteins, you get other amino acids
in your body and you don't want Tyrosine to compete with them.
Best, however, is to take it on a an empty stomach if you don't have
an overly sensitive one, but at at least to take it only when eating non-protein foods. Tyrosine is
sometimes found in formula's with Feverfew herb. It's often
recommended to take meds (any type) 'before' a storm hits, or before
any time you strongly
suspect will soon result in a migraine attack. Since this is
not a drug I am not claiming this works to counter an "attack," but rather needs to be taken daily,
THEN if a storm hits, do the whatever is needed.
Now,
its also important to understand "how" to get this herb to
work. It must be taken before hand and built up in the system for an
extended period of time, as it does not
stop a Migraine
attack but instead it keeps a person from getting them in the first
place. But this is not really
hard to maintain once a person experiences it working for them.
According to Daniel Mowrey, "The people feverfew works best for are
usually those who don't respond to any other form of medication." ~ Director
of the American Phytotherapy Research Lab Salt Lake City, Utah and book author of
"The Scientific Validation of Herbal Medicine."

A young woman has a heart attack, a gentleman is diagnosed with prostrate cancer, a child suffers from obesity which in turn raises his or her chance of diabetes and other disorders. While such problems will happen to a degree and also have other contributing factors, even the American Heart and Cancer associations, as well as medical doctors, are telling everyone to eat more fruits and vegetables to help ward these off.
The other day I learned about an elderly women who was very ill. Matter of fact, she had recently been diagnosed with her fourth heart attack! As if that wasn't enough, she was in the beginning stages of renal failure. Her doctor told her, "You can't have one more heart attack. You will die." This certainly motivated her! She realized she had to be her own health advocate so got on her computer and researched her disease. And what did she find?
After eating a lifetime of high fat, fried, dripping with greasy this or that, she learned how to cook veggie. It was only a short while afterwards she began to heal. By the time she saw her doctor not only was her heart and kidneys fine, but she had more energy than she did in years!
"Sure," some might say, "after all, she ate a lot of grease. But others only eat a little meat and fat. We're fine. You can't say we are like her. Our health is great."
Ahhhhh isn't illusion grand. :-) Oh sure, there is the exception. An Uncle Harvey who lived off of hot dogs, hamburgers, sausage, even steaks, to the ripe old age of 99. However, Uncle Harvey is the exception and not the rule. Though the thought does come to mind that life extension, one that includes high quality life, could have been increased if he had only gone veggie. One way or the other, be it Uncle Harvey could have done better, or that he is a genetic exception, this brings us full circle as we realize more and more the importance of eating a vegetarian diet is crucial for current good health as well as longevity.
There is a reason for that. Human beings are not biologically put together to be a meat eater. They can get away with it, but that's not our natural state of being and therefore when nature is denies it will result in all sorts of problems. For example, our bodies do not have the type of teeth of that of a carnivore. On the contrary, we have like the teeth to the of herbivores. Flesh eating animals have fangs to tear their meat, whereas we have teeth that are more inclined to grinding seeds, grains and fruits. Some may argue that we have incisors, but these are just for emergencies as we don't have a whole mouthful of incisors. A cat does, a dog does and so on. Matter of fact, carnivors don't require molars at all nor a jaw that moves from side to side. They just bite, tear, and generally, swallow their food whole with little to no chewing! If we don't chew, we increase the risk of ill health since chewing stimulates digestive juices. This is not the case with carnivorous creatures. It is the case with herbivorous creatures.
One of my most favorites of the physiological evidence is this next one. The intestinal tract of a meat eating creature is three times its body length, whereas the intestines of an herbivorian is ten to twelve times our body length. What does this mean? A natural born meat eating creature has shorter intestines so the meat will pass through their body quickly without rotting, but human beings, since they are herbivours by nature, have a longer intestine to break down and digest their food. If that food is vegetarian, no problem. If it is not, prepare for meat rot! <s> It just stays in there too long. Many diseases have their roots in meat rot.
I could go on and on about the physiological differences between herbivors and carnivors, such as how meat eating creatures have a much stronger hydrochloric acid than human beings have, thus they can break down the meat better whereas our lower strength hydrochloric acid can't digest meat therefore we get diseased, or that we don't have claws though having a thumb makes our body more suited for harvesting fruits, nuts, herbs and so on. I could say much more but you get the idea. :)
The livestock industry is just that, an "industry." They are in it for the money and don't have feelings for the animals suffering. After all, they are going to kill them, eat them, and profit from them. Its easier to convince themselves animals have no feelings and in that way they themselves don't have to feel. So, animals are kept in dirty, overcrowded conditions which in turn requires vast amounts of antibiotics. Then what you get is an antibiotic-resistant bacteria which is passed on those who consume the meat.
It is untrue that animals don't have feelings. Matter of fact, they know they are about to be slaughtered and often cry out for help. This trauma of being slaughtered adds "pain poisons" into the meat (such as powerful stimulants). The animal all ready has wastes within their body and blood that needed to be eliminated but were not, like urea or uric acid, and so these pain poisons join with the uneliminated waste to further contaminate the meat consumers ingest.
"The animals are kept alive and fattened by the continuous administration of tranquilizers, hormones, antibiotics, and 2,700 other drugs......The process starts even before birth and continues long after death. Although these drugs will still be present in the meat when you eat it, the law does not require that they be listed on the package." - Gary and Steven Null
An example of harmful chemicals is sodium nitrate and sodium nitrite. These chemicals are used as preservatives to slow down putrefaction in cured meat and meat products, including ham, bacon, bologna, salami, frankfurters, and fish. However, they also endanger our health. What preserves meat does not preserve us but instead is harmful. These particular chemicals give meat its bright-red appearance by reacting with pigments in the blood and muscle. Now you can know that red does not mean fresh - just disguised old meat.
Chemicals don't have intelligence and can't distinguish corpse blood from living human blood. Because of this, many persons accidentally get large doses and have become diseased or, in some cases, died from being poisoned. What about smaller quantities, some might ask. They must be safe, right? Unfortunately even lesser doses can prove itself as hazardous, especially for babies and young children or babies. Matter of fact, the United Nations' joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee of Food Additives stated that: "Nitrate should on no account be added to baby food."
In addition to dangerous chemicals, meat often carries diseases all of its own. Animals are crammed together in unclean conditions, force-fed, and inhumanely treated. Animals destined for slaughter contract many more diseases than they ordinarily would. While meat inspectors try to find and reject the "bad" meat, for more than one reason, it is simply impossible to do.
Now, lets look at meat eating from a concept many may not have thought of. While some might find this a bit esoteric, with a little thought one can see how it is connected. And what is that? The connection between meat eating and violence, including war. No matter how much we progress in science and modern technology, we find ourselves, again and again, with high crime rates, terrorism and war. Many well intended people come up with social and political solutions, and those solutions seldom work or only have short term effects, with decades of these problems continuing undaunted, from VietNam to present day terrorism and its related wars. Apparently political and social ideas are not enough and we need to look at other possibilities, such as karma. The slaughter of countless helpless animals must be considered as a causative factor in this wave of uncheckable violence.
Looking at this point in other ways, more land is required to raise cattle and other animals raised for meat, than to grow herbs, spices, grains - plants. An acre of grains produces five times more protein than an acre of pasture for meat production. An acre of beans or peas produces ten times more, and an acre of spinach twenty-eight times more protein.
In Pato's Republic the great Greek philosopher Socrates recommended a vegetarian diet because it would allow a country to make the most intelligent use of its agricultural resources. He warned that if people began eating animals, there would be need for more pasturing land. "And the country which was enough to support the original inhabitants will be too small now, and not enough?" He asked Glaucon, who replied that this was indeed true. "An so we shall go to war, Glaucon, shall we not?" To which Glaucon replied, "Most certainly."
Interestingly, meat-eating played a role in many wars during the age of European colonial expansion. The spice trade with India and other countries of the East was an object of great contention. Europeans subsisted on a diet of meat preserved with salt. In order to disguise and vary the monotonous and unpleasant taste of their food, they eagerly purchased vast quantities of spices. So huge were the fortunes to be made in the spice trade that governments and merchants did not hesitate to use arms to secure sources.
Some may be surprised to learn that even today we are still at risk of mass conflict that is based on food. Back in August 1974 the CIA published a report warning that in the near future there may not be enough food for the world's population "unless the affluent nations make a quick and drastic cut in their consumption of grain-fed animals."
Often I have been asked, "Well, you kill vegetables. Isn't that wrong too? After all, if you believe all living entities are spiritually equal, why is it ok to eat grains, vegetables, etc., and not meat?" In response, it may be pointed out that vegetarian foods such as fruits, nuts, milk, and grain do not require any killing. But even in those cases where a plant's life is taken, the pain involved is much less than when an animal is slaughtered, because the plant's nervous system is less developed. Clearly there is a vast difference between pulling a carrot out of the ground and killing a lamb.
The next question that often arises is the concern that a vegetarian diet does not include sufficient protein. Actually, there is more protein in a cup of peanuts than meat. There are many vegetables, and especially beans, that are high in protein and the right type of protein for the human body. Especially, it is easily digestible.
In addition one must ask, "Where does the cow get her protein from that you eat by eating her body? Or the chicken? And so on.???" Certainly the places they get it from, we can get it from: plants. The ideas that meat has a monopoly on protein and that large amounts of protein are required for energy and strength are both myths. While it is being digested, most protein breaks down into amino acids, which are reconverted and used by the body for growth and tissue replacement. Of these twenty-two amino acids, all but eight can be synthesized by the body itself, and these eight "essential amino acids" exist in abundance in non-flesh foods. Dairy products, grains, beans, and nuts are all concentrated sources of protein. Cheese, peanuts, and lentils, for instance, contain more protein per ounce than hamburger, pork, or porterhouse steak.
Now, when it comes to the environment, we pay dearly for meat-eating and its destruction of our environment. The heavily contaminated runoff and sewage from America's thousands of slaughterhouses and feedlots have been called a major source of pollution of the nation's rivers and streams according to the The United States Agricultural Research Service. It's becoming obvious that the fresh water resources of this planet are not only becoming polluted, depleted, and the meat industry is wasteful.
Paul and Anne Ehrlich, authors of the book "Population, Resources and Environment," found that to grow one pound of wheat requires only 60 pounds of water, whereas production of a pound of meat requires from 2,500 to 6,000 pounds of water. And in 1973 the New York Post uncovered this shocking misuse of a valuable national resource - one large chicken slaughtering plant in America was found to be using 100 million gallons of water daily! This same volume would supply a city of 25,000 people.
Now let's turn from the world geopolitical situation, and get right down to our own pocketbooks. Many vegetarian foods are better sources of high-quality, easily digestible protein than meat. A 100-gram portion of meat contains only 20 grams of protein. In comparison, a 100-gram portion of cheese or lentils yields 25 grams of protein, while 100 grams of soybeans yields 34 grams of protein. (Also, meat is more than 50% water by weight.) While meat provides less protein, it costs much more. Becoming a vegetarian could potentially save an individual shopper at least several hundred dollars each year, thousands of dollars over the course of a lifetime. The savings to America's consumers as a whole would amount to billions of dollars annually. Considering all this, it's hard to see how anyone could afford not to become a vegetarian.
Moving on to flavor, some insist that they would switch from meat to veggie foods, but they just love the taste of meat too much and believe they could never even get that veggie stuff down (what DO those vegetarians eat?, they wonder. ha. I wish to state that I was raised on meat, yet I found vegetarian foods much more tasty. You just have to know how to cook it. That is half the problem. Folks just haven't a clue how to cook veggie since we were not raised that way. I am going to start a recipe section but until I do, anyone in need of immediate veggie recipes, feel free to email me. I have a bunch! :)
Secondly, it is the herbs, spices and (vegetarian!) sauces that give the major taste to meat, and not the meat itself. For example, if one were to walk into a farm, pull the leg off of an animal (horrid but bear with me), and eat that, it would not be flavorful by nature. Whereas if the same person walked into a garden, picked a tomato and ate that, it would be much more flavorful! So add to the cooking of meat, tomato sauce, salt, herbs like oregano and so on. That is where the majority of that flavor some like is predominately coming from.
An easy transition is to start buying products that are fake meat. Personally I am not so inclined toward this, as I like my plate to look veggie, but for those who want to give up meat but not its taste, this may be a good way to finally achieve it. A brand I know of is Loma Linda. You can get veggie Big Franks, fake chicken and all sorts of things. You name it, they've got it! :-) It's in health food stores but lately I have seen it in grocery stores, especially if they have a health food isle.
To conclude, I have often run into people who, after reading scientific facts regarding meat-eating vs. vegetarianism, feel bad inside. Either they come out fighting unaware that this often is the result of feeling so bad, so shocked about what they ate or fed loved ones (their understanding, not mine), that they initially going into denial and anger. Others feel their heart sink for the same reasons, but for some reason are better able to handle it, therefore wishing to make the change. Let me make it clear, I do not present these facts about meat eating vs. vegetarianism to make anyone feel bad. Not all all. Matter of fact, I find it best to view it in a different light. For those reading this who are not vegetarians, previously you did not know the details or what else to eat, be it new recipes or where to purchase imitation meat products (that taste good like http://www.lomalinda.com), therefore no one can fix what they can not see nor facilitate. Don't beat yourself up and instead just view it as new information, because now that you know, you can do something about it! :) New information can be fun! And like I said, until I get the recipe section up and running, you can email me for veggie recipes. :-)
"I have no doubt that it is a part of the destinilitatey of the human race, in it's gradual improvement, to leave ff eating animals." ~ Thoreau

. Having had a natural curiosity whether or not music plays a role in healing, I found myself repeatedly though occasionally drawn to borrowing library books or reading links on the net which were related to this topic. The more I read, the more convinced I became that music, sound vibration, plays a significant role in our well being. . I am no genius on the topic. I am not about to write an article how it saved my life, though I have read how it assisted in saving the life of others, which I believe is true and that belief is based on information, not fancy. However, what I am going to present here are a few interesting facts that may tickle your intellect and give you a thirst for more. :-) More info, and more music of the most helpful type. .. In "Sound Health," Steven Halpern explains that music may have a paradoxical effect. For example, people who listened to Liszt's Liebestraum #31 reported it as "highly relaxing, soothing and meditative." An interesting point to take note of is that this happened even though their physiological reactions to the music showed otherwise. . Now this indicates that rhythm which is imposed seldom has as relaxing of an effect as your inborn, natural, internal rhythm. Thus we can see the importance of individual choice and how one type of music that relaxes one person may not have the same effect on someone else, sometimes even stressing them! Relaxation will happen at the psychological and physiological level when the body can express its own inner nature and harmony. . It also points out that relaxation may vary in depth. Some types of classical music can produce light relaxation, which may give none of the physiological characteristics of the deeper relaxation. Matter of fact, most folks can't tell one from the other, as well as, their long-term effects may differ. Biofeedback may help. . Lastly it indicates that new age music and similar, such as classical or that which does not manifest images, seems to open the mind and relax the body in a way that helps move one into a mental pattern where the listener can visualize. Thus we get a imagery that is personal as well as therapeutic, and we can use the mind or thoughts for mental self-healing. . Of course, let us not assume that music with lyrics are not beneficial. Some have explained that the lyrical music of the 60s and 70s moved them in a positive direction and changed their life for the better, leading them in directions of nonviolence, yoga/meditation, vegetarianism, herbal healing instead of immediate use of allopathic chemicals and so on. Thus, we are only looking at what was tested by Steve Halpern and for the specific purposes he tested it for, which is wonderful too. . Moving on, at the physical level the way music works is the auditory nerve stimulates a particular brain center which is thought to be the seat of emotions. It also stimulates the frontal cortex responsible for the intellectual interpretation of the sounds. And, it also sends impulses to a different region of the brain which in turn triggers the so-called thalmic reflex. This is is noted as rhythmic foot-tapping, swaying and nodding the head. The thalmus also influences metabolism and controls waking/sleeping cycles, hormone release, pulse rate, and blood circulation. These were some of the findings of Dr. Randall McClellan in, "The Healing Force of Music." It clearly indicates a correlation between music and health. So we can see how music works on a physical level. . Now lets take it further. Music touches us spiritually. Yet so many have wondered how. Certainly I cannot, nor can anyone, give extensive physical proof of that which is nonphysical, invisible and beyond the human eye, but we can look at our own inner musical experiences which have brought all of us various degrees of tangible realization, plus some interesting concepts presented by Dr. McClellan which back that up. .. Dr. McClellan believes that there are two types of spiritual music. One leading the listener into a trance state, the other type leads to a meditative state. What is the difference? . Basically, trance is the result of rhythmic patterns which are sounded simultaneously and repetitively, over long periods of time, such as with shamanistic rituals. . I would like to add, none of these are bad and all of them are good. Again, we're simply looking at the findings in a specific way that often has gone unrecognized or at least unsubstantiated. .. Music for meditation is slower, quieter, with a melodic phrase that lasts as long as the inspiration phase of breathing. Meditational music affects the mind/consciousness first, the body second, and increases an atmosphere making it conductive to peace, stillness and inner contemplation. It helps one to slow and deepen breathing, altering perception of time and space by focusing the listener onto the present moment. . It may be interesting to note that the predominate form of meditative music used in America has its roots mostly in the East or India, such as that of Ravi Shankar, for example. . Some, such as Dr. Robert Fried, believe that specific instruments have specific effects of which they are best at enhancing. Different musical instruments and the specific sounds they make will correlate to, and influence, different aspects of the self. .. * Brass, percussion and electric music influence the physical body. .. *Woodwind and strings influence the emotions. .. *Strings give influence to the mental aspect. .. *Harp, organ, wind chimes and high strings will touch the soul. (High strings can include electric guitars when used in accordance. One example would be some of the music by George Harrison.) . There is so much more I would like to put here, but time is not currently available. Maybe later. Thank you for your time! .. . .

What
is Vedic astrology? It can go by several names, such as Jyotish, Eastern
or Sidereal. Any of the
above are one and the same. Many
times I have been asked what the differences are between Vedic astrology
and Western astrology. First
I would like to start with some basic commonalities. The signs are the
same, the houses are the same, most of the planets are the same though
there are some differences. The
planets Pluto, Uranus and Neptune are considered "outer
planets" and are not used in Vedic astrology. They are not
considered to be part of our galaxy but part of the one next to us.
While some Jyotishi's (Vedic astrologers) believe they may have some
influence, they also believe they move too slow for it to be as
important as the others. Besides, the great sages and saints of the East
did not use them. To
take it a step further, in Vedic astrology there are two planets which
are not present in Western astrology.
Those planets are called Rahu and Ketu. Though technically they
are just masses, dark masses, yet they have a powerful influence over
our lives. Western astrology has more recently given some recognition to
these shadowy planets Rahu and Ketu, referring to them as north and
south nodes. However, their potency has often been insufficiently
recognized. They are very powerful! In
Vedic astrology nothing exists without someone personal behind it.
Therefore each and every planet
has a controller or demi-god in charge. For those who are concerned, a
demi-god is not the same as God. With that said, each presiding demi-god
has a particular influence as well as responsibility over their planet.
And each has their own story. Since I have touched on two planets that
may be new to the reader, Rahu and Ketu, let us look at the story of
Rahu. In
another time and era, on the higher planetary system often referred to
as heaven, the
demigods were fighting with the asuras (demons) over a very special
nectar that was noted to make one immortal . Now, even though the gods
live for very long periods of time anyway, they do not live forever.
Therefore they were all very anxious to drink this rasa or nectar. There
are demigods in charge of good or the positive, and there are demons in
charge of evil or the negative. These two groups had been fighting. If
those in charge of evil won, there would be great chaos in all the three
worlds. To put an end to this war, a female incarnation of Vishnu,
called Mohini, arrived on the scene and said She would distribute the
nectar. Even the demons trusted Mohini. All expected Her to distribute
the nectar fairly and thus, they all sat down with their cups to receive
their quota of rasa nectar
as She passed by each one of them to serve their drinks. However, She
knew what the horrid outcome would be if those of the dark side were
given any of this special nectar. Therefore She first passed it out to
the demi-gods and made sure it would be completely gone once she reached
the demon's row. It was a transcendental trick. Not to be judge
materially but appreciated spiritually.
Now, Rahu is known as the enemy of the Sun and Moon and is often
the cause of eclipses as he likes to get in their way. In this case, he
wondered whether Mohini
would *really* give the demons a fair share of the nectar and thus
disguised himself as a god of light, seating himself smack in the middle
of the Sun god and the Moon god. Why oh why did he pick them? Everything
happens for a purpose. Due to their not-so-friendly past dealings with
Rahu, they saw through his disguise and recognized their regular,
harassing enemy was sitting right between them! The nectar was about to be served. Rahu held out his cup and
was given some nectar. Well, the Sun and Moon gods recognized Rahu and
told the Supreme God, Lord Vishnu or in this case, Mohini. Just as the
nectar touched the tip of Rahu's tongue, his head was severed from his
body with the Sudarshana disc. Because the nectar had touched his lips,
his his head could not die but was indeed immortalize. It was flung into
the heavens, between the Moon and the Sun, where Rahu continues to
create eclipses. (This is a
transcendental pastime not to be judged or even evaluated according to
material concepts of right and wrong.) Rahu
and Ketu both can cause havoc in the chart, and that is their
reputation, though more-so Rahu. Whenever someone hears they have Rahu
here or Ketu in this or that house,
they do not like it. However, ignorance is not bliss. We all have
a Rahu and a Ketu and not knowing about them does not stop their havoc
but may increase it. Whereas knowing about them, where they are located,
what time period they are strongest and so on, can help one avoid
pitfalls in life.
In addition, too many have given these planets a bad reputation on an absolute basis. No one is completely negative and they can also bring some good into ones life. For example, Rahu is responsible for chaos, frustration, incendiary, strife, intoxicants, ghosts, evil spirits, uncleanliness, disease - to name a few. Scary? Well, few take the time to give Rahu credit for movement, traveling, the ability to use the media successfully, outcastes (sometimes good if used to rebel against nonsense), the ability to become king-like, rich, foreigners, an attraction to astrology, interest in philosophy, salvation and even liberation.
I
am forty-nine years old as of this writing. When I was a teenager I was in my *major* Rahu
period. That period should
have, or could have, lead to all sorts of horrid experiences.
Admittedly, while some were not sublime,
it simultaneously is the time I became interested in meditation, yoga,
vegetarianism, psychic interests popped up and so on. The fact is, to
get a better understanding of how Rahu and Ketu function for each person
they need to get an individualized Vedic birth (Rasi) chart. Having focused so much on these two planets I would like to move on to other differences between the Eastern and Western systems of astrology. One which may prove of interest are stars. Eastern astrology uses and includes many stars in the chart. Sometimes it is called constellation astrology. While the stars are not as powerful as the planets, do not underestimate them. After all, this is how the birth of Christ was recognized, by the astrological northern star in the sky. Each sign has a rising star and it holds its influence. Every day or so the Moon passes through certain stars which give certain influence. Another
interesting difference is that in Western astrology our *sign* is
considered to be our sun sign. However, in Eastern astrology the more
important sign, next to the ascendant, is where the Moon is located. The
reason for this is that the Sun represents the body whereas the Moon
represents the mind, which we carry with us birth after birth, but the
body is not us. It changes. We still need to know about it, but the Moon
sign is more about who we are, though this has all been very simplified
here. Next
comes something a bit sensitive to discuss because I want to make sure
all respect is given to Western astrology. There is a shift in the
earth's axis which, in time, causes the zodiac to be differently placed.
If
that placement shift is not included, this is one reason that what
appears in a person's chart does not ring true to them. Vedic astrology
explains that there is a 23 degree difference between what is used by
them and what is used by others, thus making most folks one sign back
from the one they are accustomed to viewing themselves as. This is a
hard one for some, as we tend to get attached to the sign we have think
of our-self as. "Hi. I'm a Pisces." Well, you may not
be. At
first when I learned that Eastern astrology was 23 degrees more
accurate, I was thrilled. After all,
western astrological charts did not seem to portray me
accurately. When I next learned that by so doing, I probably would NOT
be the same sign I thought I had been for over forty years, I was not
happy, as I saw what seemed to be characteristics of that sign in my
personality! What to do? Well, upon deeper examination I discovered that
I DID indeed have those traits, but it was not due to the sign I thought
it was due to, but another which offered something similar. By relating
this story I hope it will help you make any such adjustments needed, as
we all agree that accuracy is more important than attachment to a
certain *sign.* Charts all too often "tell it like it is." We
would love to view our-self as having no flaws, no areas that need work,
yet life hands us some lumps and bumps when we ignore that we all have
our homework assignments which were assigned to us by the universe. When
we don't do our homework, we don't always do so well in the school of
life. If we hand it in tardy, we may be able to rectify some areas.
Charts will contain benefic as well as the negative. Don't give up when
we running into a malefic in the chart but keep on reading since often
one sign, house, planet, star, etc.,
will decrease or cancel out the a negative somewhere else. Nothing
is etched in stone. We all use a road map when going on a vacation. It
is not the only route there, just the most helpful one according to the
map maker. By looking at the road map of our life we can better see the
pot holes so we are less likely to fall into them. How can we fix what
we can't see? The negatives you read are there to make you aware of them
so you can put your focus on what you may not have seen otherwise and
therefore improve or fix them. And the benefics could have gone
unnoticed thus we have not found the opportunities in life we want. Of
course, there will always be some inaccuracies, an any reading, be it
Western astrology, Eastern astrology, Tarot cards or something else, 80
% accuracy is considered good. We all have our freewill. Eastern
astrology can help us see the bends and corners hiding in our life, and
hiding opportunities that never give our freewill a chance in that
direction since we never knew it was there. Its like cleaning off the
specks and smudges on our eye glasses. We can still see if we don't
clean them, but we can see better if we do. Interested in further information? Check out this link: Blessings, Prtha
