| "A cynic is not merely one who reads bitter lessons from the past; he is the one who is prematurely disappointed in the future." - Sidney J. Harris |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| prematurely disappointed revolves around the life of Cassiday (Cass), a single, twenty-something living with her divorced mother and their cat Spaz. Though of above-average intelligence, she never finished college and therefore holds multiple unskilled positions to keep the household running: as a bank teller for 2nd National, a bookstore clerk at Plebeian's Bookstore, and as a fast-food vendor at Venus' Frytrap. On the plus side, this allows her to be out of the house as much as possible. Posessing intellect in a world without, Cass' natural sarcasm has turned her into a cynic, though inside she's really a good person. She is hopelessly single, a result of years of keeping others at arms length, save for her closest friends Spence, Angi, and Marisol. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| NEWS: 9/18/2007 - Looks like the Oshkosh Northwestern run will finally get going Monday October 1 on a M-W-F frequency. Sure hope I can keep up... 8/2007 - received a rejection from King Features. I took it as a good sign when they bothered to send a response after first saying they wouldn't unless they were interested in your work, secondly because I did not include an SASE, and thirdly that Brendan Burford hand-wrote a note after the form letter section of the letter. I quote: "I think your writing is good. Initially, I like the sarcasm and cynicism you display in Cass...the concern, however, is that over time, a character like this becomes less and less likable when it's a daily diet of the glass being half empty. I'd happily consider future submissions from you." So it's a promising "no". 5/22 - caught a comment on the Oshkosh Northwestern forums wanting "pd" back. Talked with Stew Rieckman and we agreed to run 3 times a week starting in July. 4/5 - received a rejection from Universal Press Syndicate. To quote: "While we find the consistency of your dialogue and artwork to be good, we'll have to pass. Our editorial board does not think we could do justice to your efforts." I don't know what that means. 3/21 - received a call from Amy Lago, comics editor at The Washington Post Writers Group. She liked my ideas, writing, art, and title, and encouraged me to send more and was hopeful of the possiblity of a late 2008 launch. Exciting news, though without a contract, pessimists would say insignificant. 12/2006 - received rejection letter from Creators Syndicate. Just the standard form letter, no specific opinions, just the "not the right time, does not reflect on your talent", blah blah blah. |
