There will be no Port Orange Spirit of Cycling November, 2002 due to major road construction that affects 4 of our routes. The detour is not considered safe or scenic so we have decided to postpone the event until the construction is completed. Looking forward to seeing you all in the Spring! (date to be announced)

All rides are flat loops that start and finish at the City of Port Orange City Center Complex. The mass start is at 8:30 AM. Century riders are urged to start at 8:30 AM (or earlier if concerned about their speed). The Port Orange Police Department will be working with us for the 8:30 mass start by policing the major intersections on our way out of Port Orange. All other riders may start at their leisure but we ask that everyone begin their route by 9 AM since the sag/rest stops' hours of operation are based on an 8:30 start. We ask on the entry form which distance you think you will be riding for planning purposes only. You are welcome to change your route the morning of the event. In fact, the 102 mile route has a bail-out option at 24 miles that would result in a 50 mile ride. And the 70 mile route has a bailout at 32 miles resulting in a 50 mile ride. Your route sheet will prompt you to make your choice between continuing on for the full route or taking a shorter route back to the start/finish. If you are uncertain which route to choose, the 20 miler goes through Port Orange to the beachside down to a well stocked rest stop at the park in Ponce Inlet. All other routes start out together heading west of town and south to New Smyrna and beyond. The 70 mile route does go over a high bridge over to the beachside in New Smyrna Beach. Picnic with two live bands from noon to 3:30 PM.
Bring your entire family! For non-cyclists and children who also want to bring their trikes and bikes and enjoy the cycling spirit but don't want to ride on the roads, the Port Orange City Center Complex is a beautiful park setting with bikepaths. Or, enjoy the playground, ballfields, skateboard park, and gymnasium. The Port Orange YMCA is adjacent. Shopping and the beaches are nearby. And after the ride, enjoy the picnic and live music in the amphitheater.
Registration opens at 7 AM the day of the event. Non-mandatory pre-registration Saturday, November 10, from 4 to 7 PM at our lodging host Beachside Motel, 3309 S. Atlantic Avenue, Daytona Beach Shores, FL.
Non-mandatory Bike Safety Check is available Saturday, November 10, from 10 AM to 2 PM at Bob's Bike Shop, 3855 Ridgewood Ave, Port Orange. Repairs, parts, sales, and rentals available. (386)761-4691. Bike mechanics will be set up near the registration area of the Spirit of Cycling on Sunday morning and will be roving the routes during the event, helping anyone in need, and checking in at the sag stops. They are offering their assistance at no charge, however, there will be reasonable charges for any parts required or requested.
Daytona Beach area cyclists have celebrated The Spirit of Cycling with an annual ride for a decade in Ormond Beach and Palm Coast. In 1999, our Spirit of Cycling Ride came of age hosting 500 participants in Ormond. We had 400 participants in Palm Coast in 2001. This is our first Spirit of Cycling in Port Orange. We are delighted to be a City of Port Orange Anniversary Special Event here in our hometown and invite you to ride with us November 11 on beautiful scenic backroads through Volusia, Brevard, and Seminole Counties. Cycle through small rural communities, marshes, hammocks, lagoons, and wetlands along the intracoastal waterway. Our routes are clearly marked. Maps and route sheets are provided. Read the account of the 9 day race across Oregon, Idaho, Wyoming, Utah, Colorado, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama, and back home to Florida on the Race Across AMerica Website and the Ultracycling Website.
