WELCOME!

We hope you will feel right at home as we worship together. If you are searching for a church home, we'd like you to know that there's a special place here just for you.

A PLACE FOR WORSHIP

In worship, we gather in God's presence to receive God's Word, blessing and inspiration... Each of these occasions is a special time of spiritual refreshment. We hope this is what you experience here at Pontoppidan, and we certainly hope to see you soon.

A PLACE FOR FRIENDSHIP

Nothing quite compares to the joy of Christian friendship. That's why we at Pontoppidan make it a priority to build lasting bonds between the members of our church family - bonds of concern and genuine commitment to one another. Best of all, this circle of care is ever-widening. We'd love for it to include YOU, too.

A PLACE FOR SERVICE

In response to God's love and an abundant life through our Savior Jesus Christ, we commit ourselves to reach out in service to others. This applies both within the church family and outside our church fellowship.

A PLACE FOR YOU

Even if you may not be a member of our church you are invited to participate in various activities.

Pontoppidan Lutheran Church

History

Pontoppidan Lutheran Church of rural Elliott, Illinois exists for a purpose and this purpose is "to proclaim and uplift the Gospel of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ through the means of Grace." During the past many years the congregation has done this and with the help of the Almighty God will continue in the future.

Pontoppidan Lutheran Church is named in honor of a Lutheran Bishop - Eric Pontoppidan. He was born in Denmark, became a professor of Theology at the University of Copenhagen and later Bishop of Bergen, Norway. Norway was a part of Denmark at that time. The name Pontoppidan comes from the Latin "PONS" meaning "bridge" and "OPPIDAN" meaning "citizen."

The Norwegian people who came to Ford County, Illinois somewhere around 1873, were mostly immigrants who had come from Norway to Kendall County, Illinois. This is one of the oldest settlements in Illinois, and they lived there for awhile, many of them marrying and starting to farm for themselves. When it came to buying land, however, they found the price higher in that settlement than in other places. Ford County had better opportunities and almost all of the early settlers came here from Kendall County.

Having established homes, their next ambition was to organize a congregation and build a church. At first the settlers held layman's meetings in private homes and schoolhouses.

On May 30, 1876 a meeting was held at the home of John Hatteberg to organize a congregation; what is known today as Pontoppidan Lutheran Church. A committee was chosen to draw up a constitution. There were twenty-one families and two single persons who were charter members.

The church's beginning was finalized on August 23, 1876. After meeting in private homes and school houses, the church was built at its present location in 1881 at a cost of $3000.00. Through the years, many, many, improvements have been made on the church.

Pontoppidan owns and maintains its own cemetery located to the corner north and then east of the church. The land was purchased when the church was organized.
