This is not related to the webcam views, but one of the most famous people born in Warsaw is Maria Skłodowska-Curie, winner of the Nobel Prize in 1903 and 1911 for her phenomenal achievements in the study of radiation and radioactive elements. She was born in Warsaw on November 7, 1867. In July 1898, she and her husband, Pierre Curie, announced the discovery of a new element, ‘Polonium’, named for Poland. To have a new element named for a country is special, but for an element to be named for a country not on the map at that time, is even more special. In 1898, Poland was not on the map of Europe since it was still partitioned and occupied by Russia, Prussia, and Austria.
