Les MURS - Montréal Ultra Runners Society
presents
"Sixth Annual"
Mont-Royal Summit Quest 50km/100km
"Fat Ass Style"
Fun, Friends, 50km or
100km!
Below are some proposed details.
Read them through and then contact us if you're interested in participating.
START DATE & TIME:
Sunday, June 15, 2008 6:00 am
REGISTRATION:
There is no "application" -- just email us that you want to participate,
and once you get an email confirmation,
you will be on the Fat Ass list of participants.
LOCATION:
A somewhat measured 50km due west of the summit of Mont-Royal.
The start will be on Madsen Avenue just west of Beaconsfield's Beaurepaire village in Montréal's West Island.
Directions to start-line:
- Take Highway 20 west (past Sources, St.Jean, and St.Charles to the Woodland exit (exit #45)
- Turn left onto Woodland south and follow until Beaconsfield Blvd.
- Turn right onto Beaconsfield Blvd. heading west.
- Turn right onto second street on the right (Madsen Avenue).
- Second house on the right (#55, white bungalow/cottage) is the start meeting area.
COURSE:
Course Photos!
The course will follow quiet streets and
bicycle paths of Montréal's West Island lakeshore
until reaching the Lachine Canal bike paths in (you guessed it) Lachine.

The course continues on the bike paths past LaSalle and on through the
Old Port district of Montréal.
From there the course will continue to follow bike paths in front of the
Habitat '67 apartments to
Île Ste-Hélène before crossing the
Jacques Cartier Bridge, climbing up to
parc La Fontaine, then heading west on
Rachel's bike path to Mont-Royal.
Once the base of Mont-Royal is reached, the 4.5km
Olmsted carriage road will be ascended to the summit loop.
The 2km summit loop will be followed clockwise around the cross before circling back to the
observation deck and the finish.
The course will not be certified, but will be as close to 50km as a bicycle odometer will permit.
FINISH:
The Finish area lies approximately 220 meters higher than the start but most of that elevation gain will be achieved in the last
10km of the run.
That's not too high but after a 40km run, perception is everything.
Rides for participants can be arranged back to the start line if needed.
FEE: None
AWARDS: None
AID:
There will no organized aid stations and there is virtually no aid on the course!
There are some water fountains and washrooms on the more developed bike paths but the race director
cannot vouch for their status on race day.
Most runners will be their own support crews. If you do have a support crew, in true "FAT ASS" spirit, it’s hoped these crews
will offer support to runners without crews.
The Race Director will be running the event himself.
If he passes you, ask him for help if you need it.
If you pass him, perhaps you could offer some help.
We'll try to have a reception area set up with drinks and snacks at the finish area.
Whatever you can contribute would be appreciated.
WIMPS: None
COURSE RECORDS:
That's not the point.
NOTES TO RUNNERS AND CREWS:
- Runners will be responsible for their own well-being, and safety while on the course. So be careful out there.
- Participants will also be responsible for navigation on the course. Printed maps and descriptions of the route will likely be provided although route markers will not.
- If you expect to finish after dark, then please consider another event.
- Any support crews will also require good navigation skills to find their runners.
- On the course, aid is up to 50km apart. Although the course does pass through some business areas, who wants to go shopping?
- The course is flat with some hills, or hilly with some flats depending on how you look at it. Be prepared for both.
100km OPTION!
For a third year running, an intrepid few will have the chance to test their mettle in the 100K option. As in previous years, the 100K will start Saturday night at midnight on the Mont-Royal Summit and will
follow the 50K course in reverse to join the 50K runners at their start-line. The 100km runners will 'about-face' and try to keep up with
the 50km runners on their ascent up the mountain.
100K Participants will need to:
- be more than just a little bit crazy.
- reach the 50K start-line before the 6am start to ensure race continuity. Getting there in under 6 hours will afford a rest period before joining the 50K runners in their trek to the mountain summit.
- run in groups of 2 or more during the sunless hours for safety.
- be familiar with the course (i.e. have previously run the 50K event).
If you have Ultra experience and are interested in taking on the 100K challenge, please let us know ASAP so logistics can be worked out.
