Plymouth Community Band bio

The Plymouth Community Band (PCB) - based in Plymouth, Michigan (metro Detroit) - is composed of 55-75 volunteer, amateur musicians (winds & percussion) who enjoy coming together to make music, in a "concert band" arrangement. Members come from all walks of life, have diverse backgrounds and experiences, and range in age from teenagers to octogenarians.

The Plymouth Community Band was founded in 1960, as a German "oompah" band, and has remained intact ever since, evolving into its current concert band arrangement. The PCB is most reknown as Plymouth's "Concerts in the Park" band, due to its long-standing tradition of performing six Thursday night concerts in Kellogg Park in downtown Plymouth in June and July. The PCB rehearses once a week, year round (except for August! :-), and performs other outdoor concerts as well as a slate of indoor concerts during the school year.

Carl Battishill is the director of the Plymouth Community Band. He has been conductor since 1979, and is only the third conductor the PCB has ever had. Carl is a music educator in the West Bloomfield school district, and is one of several PCB members who are music educators as well.

On July 27, 2006 the National Alumni Association of Kappa Kappa Psi and Tau Beta Sigma awarded the Plymouth Community Band its Community Band Award for 2003-2005.
