| Offense |
Poor shot selection on occasions but that's
due to Kobe's very physical style of offense which is to penetrate
and drive at all cost. Sometimes too aggressive and a prime candidate
for serious knee injury. Attempts acrobatic shots like MJ but can't
hit it as consistently.
His shooting ability has improved remarkably.
Holds NBA record for most three pointers with 12 consecutive threes
(against Seattle Jan 7, 2003)
|
Very dominant offensive player in High School
because of his physical maturity. Quick physical maturity may make
him injury prone. Ferocious dunker and can score 27-30pts if needed.
See if he can maintain his hangtime in the NBA like Jordan
Often prefers to pass rather than shoot.
Needs to develop at least two deadly offensive weapons to dominate
the league.
|
The quickest NBA player to date. He has shown
great scoring ability but needs help from team-mates. Extremely
physical and loves to go inside for the layup and hopefully draw
the foul. Has an unstoppable crossover move that gazumped Jordan
in 1996.
Incredibly robust considering that he challenges
bigger player to stop him. Maybe the football training (Ivo was
a wide receiver) has taught him to handle the roughness and the
pain.
|
Super smooth jumper. Beautiful to watch. Good shot selection and
an explosive dunker. Poetry-in-motion like MJ especially 12 feet
from the basket.
Has demonstrated consistency and focus in offense. More intelligent
(by being calm, emotionless, calculative) and versatile player than
Kobe. Like Kobe, he needs another unstoppable offensive weapon to
truly dominate the NBA. Eg. develop an unblockable turnaround fadeway
jumper like MJ.
|
Crazy dunker has shown us his madz hops by dunking on 7'2"
center Frederique Weiss at the Olympics.
Fun to watch because you'll never know what he's gonna do next.
Needs to be more consistent and deliver when it's crunch time. Lack
of heart is a suspect than his desire to be on tonight's ESPN highlight
reel.
Needs a killer instinct instead of a show-boat instinct.
|
Probably the greatest to ever played the game. He's one smart cookie
and has shown the ability to learn and improve his game every season.
Unpredictable and very quick to adapt to changes in the game. Incredible
hangtime and fitness during his younger days (< 29 years old)
|
| Defense |
Great defender. Aggressive like Pippen
(when he was with Jordan). Good anticipation. |
Needs improvement. Needs to be more
aggressive. |
Small size makes him a liability in
guarding bigger players 6'7" who can shoot over him. Has great
anticipation and quickness when it comes to stealing the ball. |
OK defense. Good defensive rebounder
with his long arms. Needs to be more physical and yet conserve his
energy for offense. |
Needs improving by being more aggressive. |
Aggressive defender. Unbelievable anticipation.
Sneaks from behind and uses leaping ability to block bigger players.
Won the 1987-88 Defensive Player of the Year award. |
| Team Factor |
Tries
to get team involved in the offense but needs Shaq's help. The team
still thinks of him as a teammate and not as a leader. Need improving
as team player and be more versatile in plugging holes in the team's
offense and defense when need be. |
Gets team involved with his bullet pass and
no-look dish. Completely unpredictable passing ala Magic (in the
early 80's).
Better passer than MJ.
|
Plays like a madman every night. Needs offensive
help from team-mates if they are to win the championship.
They need figure out how to stop Shaq.
|
Throws ball out when double teamed but needs to be less predictable
as to when and who he passes to. Turnovers are mainly caused by
opponents intercepting his passing lane. Good team player. Gets
team involved.
Needs more help from team-mates when double-teamed.
|
Tries to be team-player
but was exposed when he left team-mates to fend for themselves in
the playoffs against Sacramento in 2000-01. |
Charming facade on the outside belies an incredible thirst to win.
Does not tolerate team-mates who don't play as hard as he does.
|
| X-Factor |
Has shown ability to step-up when the
team needs him. But needs to be consistent to be "THE NEXT"
gen when Jordan "actually" retires. |
Will he suffer "rookie burnout"
in the NBA regular season. Physical style of play (driving inside
and banging bodies) may make him injury prone. |
Plays hard and tries to lead by example.
Will team-mates follow his leadership? |
Needs to show bigger heart and greater
desire to win. He's too a nice guy to team-mates. Needs to be more
vocal (ie berating like Jordan) when team-mates fail and don't tolerate
them if they didn't step-up. |
Incredible dunks raises risk in knee
injury, as we see now. VC was sidelined for most of the 2002-03 season.
Could not elevate as high as he used to (pre-2001). |
Ability to dominate the league consistently
every night. Uses psychological and physical weapons to defeat opponents. |
| Favourite Offensive Moves |
Full
bore drive followed by floating jumper |
High-arcing
rainbow jumper. (Need to improve shooting mechanics) |
Ankle
breaking crossover move followed by a high-arcing jumper. |
Super smooth jumper
beyond the arc or 15-20 feet away. |
No deadly offensive
weapon that delivers consistently. Explosive dunker only. Needs to
use his athleticism to develop an unstoppable jumper. Otherwise he's
just another Dominique Wilkins clone. |
Full-bore drive coming
to a squeeking stop followed by an ultra-soft floating jumper. |
| Basketball IQ |
Improving through the seasons. Need
to be more versatile and less unpredictable on offense. Keep opponents
second-guessing when he's gonna dish it out or shoot. |
Mature and intelligent. Truly understands
team-concept of the game. |
Needs better shot selection and improve
his consistency in offense. Versatile player but needs to be more
vocal when team-mates don't play as hard. |
Has shown ability to improve his game
season after season. Able to carry the team in the absence of Grant
Hill. |
Not a clever player. Loves the attention
but not the dirty work. Goes for the dunk instead of preserving his
knees for the whole season. |
Next to Bill Russell, this man is second
to none. MJ is the Albert Einstein of basketball. He could see plays
unfolding even before they happen. |
| Leadership |
Tries
to be the team-leader but unable to create the team-chemistry ala
Jordan. Team-mates doubt if he's interested in stats or leading the
team to a WIN. |
Unselfish
leader in High School and has shown poise and focus amidst all the
hype. |
Has
shown great leadership amidst the turmoil with cops and gangsta' friends.
Great focus and heart like Jordan. |
Quiet and charismatic
leader replacing Grant Hill as the go-to guy in offense. Needs to
be like Jordan when motivating team-mates. He needs to belittle those
who don't step-up. |
Tries to be leader
but needs to earn respect from team-mates. Needs to show more heart
and determination in his game. |
A berating style
of leadership. He belittles team-mates who don't perform well. Those
who manage to step-up are respected. Those that don't get crushed
by MJ's dominating presence (ie they get kicked out of the team). |
| Big Question |
Great athleticism but seems to hit
the plateau in terms of offensive skills. Needs to develop another
unstoppable offensive weapon in order to truly dominate the league.
|
Physically developing still. Increase
bulk and size may make him injury prone. Needs to pace himself through
the regular season to protect his knees. |
Can he lead the team to another NBA
Finals? |
Can he step-up when under pressure
in the playoffs? |
Will we see the 2000 half-man half-amazing
show again? |
Why did he retire when he was at his
peak? Could he have won another two rings back in 1993-94 and 1994-95.
Probably yes but we'll never know... |
