Types of shocks

• Twin tube shocks: Most shocks are twin tube types. Gas charged ones are better as they fade less after extensive driving.
• Monotube shocks: These are higher performance shocks as they are made to tighter tolerances. They have less variance and are best for off road and racing applications as they dissipate heat faster. On the down side they cannot be used in all applications such as struts. They allow a larger bore size to be used in the same space which gives you more damping control.

It is important to note that when changing struts or coil over shocks that you should also change the mounts. The mounts often have rubber parts that wear out over time, so that even if you do replace the struts the car still won't ride as good as new. Also labor will be one of the major cost items so you might as well have your mechanic change them since eventually they need to be replaced also. You don't want to pay $80/corner in labor twice.

Traditional aftermarket brand shocks are junk. By this I mean Gabriel and Monroe. These parts are typically designed to last 10-20K miles only. The problem is the labor to put them in often costs more than the parts themselves. So even if you have a lifetime warranty on the parts it won't matter since you still pay for the labor over and over. Don't make this mistake unless your car is on the brink or you're gonna sell it.

• OEM parts from the dealer. These typically must last the vehicle warranty period so you know they will be ok. These are your best bet. They were designed specifically for your vehicle. Think about this. It may be worth paying a bit more.
• Sachs
• Tokico
• Bilstein

• Gabriel shock absorbers. The valving inside is very primitive 1950s tehnology. I had a set put on my Celica and the lasted only 6 months until they leaked oil and wore out. The second pair lasted just about as long. Do not waste your money on these.
• KYB aftermarket shocks due to too high N2 gas pressures. They will be too stiff for most users.
• Monroe aftermarket. Better valve technology than Gabriel but still poor quality. Won't last long. Back to main page
