Early Player Ratings-

Pre-Combine Pre-Format

  1. Eli Manning                     QB      6-4.5, 221       Mississippi Mel- Outstanding arm and tremendous pocket awareness.
  2. *Larry Fitzgerald            WR      6-3, 221          Pittsburgh (4.47) Mel- Can't beat his size, skills and attitude.  Poili said he was the top rated player at any position he has ever evaluated. Fitzgerald (6-3 1/8, 221) ran his 40s in 4.51 and 4.47. He added 20 strength reps, a 35-inch vertical, a 10-1 long jump, a 4.27 short shuttle and a 6.97 three-cone drill.
  3. Mike Williams                 WR     6-5 230           USC Mel- Terrific combo of size and strength.  Monster size with plenty of speed, scored an amazing 30 TDs in 2 seasons.
  4. Robert Gallery                 OT     6-7, 323            Iowa Mel- 6-7, 318-pound pro-style pass blocker.
  5. *Kellen Winslow              TE      6-4, 247          Miami  Mel-Speed, athleticism and pass-receiving skill of a WR.   Winslow (6-3 7/8, 247 pounds) was actually four pounds less here than at the combine. He lifted the bar 24 times and ran for an average of 4.55 seconds. He added a 10-foot-1 long jump, a 33½-inch vertical jump, a 4.10 in the short shuttle, a 11.35 in the long shuttle, and a 6.71 in the three-cone drill.
  6. Roy Williams                    WR     6-2.5, 211         Texas (4.37) Mel- A brilliant talent -- physically, he has it all.  Was top rated player going into the season and did nothing to hurt his rating all season. Has the best size, speed combo of any WR in the draft, and still is 3rd rated reciever on most boards. Is the closest player in size, speed, hands, and production combo to Randy Moss, since well Randy Moss. Williams (6-2½, 211) ran the 40 twice. Everyone had him under 4.4 on his second run, some as low as 4.37. He didn't run quite that fast the first time. He also had a 39½-inch vertical, an 11-foot long jump, a 3.97 short shuttle and a 6.75 three-cone drill. Willams is scheduled to visit the Texans in the near future.
  7. *Ben Roethlisberger        QB      6-5, 241          Miami of Ohio Mel- Great size (6-5, 245) plus all the intangibles. His positional drills were referred to as outstanding. They had him throw a lot of passes on the move, and threw about 80 passes total with very good accuracy. He threw to Grant Mattos, who was with the Chargers last year, along with Cal Murry, a running back at Miami, Ohio this past year and tight end Matt Brandt (no relation). They finished the workout by having him stand flat-footed on his own 40 and throwing to receivers in five-yard increments starting at the opposing 30-yard line. By the end of the drill, he was connecting to receivers in the end zone 60 yards away. One Giants personnel guy said to me, "I've seen enough," as in Roethlisberger can't get any better. Another person there said, "If Al Davis passes on him, he's making a big mistake."
  8. *Kenechi Udeze              DE      6-3, 285         USC (4.7) Mel- Highly productive (16.5 sacks) and can still get better.   Has the size speed and production to be the number one rated player in the draft.
  9. *Sean Taylor                     FS      6-2.5, 228          Miami /OF  Mel- Could be NFL's best safety early in his career.  Taylor stood in at 6-2½, weighed 228 pounds (two pounds less than at the combine), and ran three times for a 4.51 average. He added 11 strength reps, a 10-foot-1 long jump, a 35-inch vertical jump, and opted not to run any of the shuttle drills
  10. *Vince Wilfork                 DT      6-1, 323          Miami  Mel- Tremendous athletic ability for his size.  NOSE TACKLE DEFINED! I believe he is the number one player in this draft who could step right into the Patriots Championship Defense and help immediately, only Belichick doesn't seem to like Miami players. Again if you look at his size speed strength and production combo most years would be considered the top pick, remember Big Daddy Wilkerson, Wilfolk was light years beyond Wilkerson as a college player. Wilfork was 6-1 1/8, 323 pounds, lifted the bar 36 times and ran for a 5.08 average. He had an 8-foot-5 long jump, a 26½-inch vertical jump, a 4.50 short shuttle and a 7.62 in the three-cone drill.
  11. *Tommie Harris                DT      6-3, 296          Oklahoma  Mel- Quick off the ball and able to shed blocks.  Another player who could have been the number one pick, but depth has moved him down.
  12. Will Smith                         DE      6-4, 260         Ohio State  Mel- Dominating outside pass rusher.  Speed rusher who should be a top ten pick, and may go as low as 20 to Miami.
  13. *DeAngelo Hall                 CB     5-11, 200, 4.34 Virginia Tech  Mel- Impressive combination of strength and speed.  Great speed has him shooting up the charts, could go as high as 12 to Jets. Hall did not run the 40, standing on what he did at the combine. He did display a 10-9 long jump, a 39-inch vertical, a 3.68 short shuttle, a 6.39 three-cone drill and 15 reps. Sources at the workout also said that Hall looked great in his drills.
  14. *Randy Starks                   DT     6-4, 305          Maryland   Mel- Athletic and can explode up the field.  In games I watched he was a monster. Has size speed combo to be a DT or DE. May be drafted lower then this position, though I don't know why.
  15. *Steven Jackson                RB      6-2, 240, 4.55 Oregon State   Mel-Tremendous blend of quickness and power. Word is they discovered a slightly torn ACL at the combine. If true he becomes more of a risk, and may be available at 21. The signings of Garner and Staley will cause him to drop, but Pats will still have to trade up to prevent Parcell's from jumping over them to select him. Jackson (6-2, 231) weighed in about 10 pounds fewer than he did at the combine. He ran his 40s in 4.55 and 4.56, the short shuttle in 4.09 and 7.03 in the three-cone drill. He had a vertical jump of 37½ and a long jump of 9-10 and did 16 strength lifts. He also looked great in his workout. After this workout, Jackson becomes the running back leader and probably will be the first one off the board on Draft Day.
  16. *Reggie Williams               WR     6-4, 225         Washington (4.48)  Mel- Has the size to create favorable matchups.  Great college player with great size. Many have him rated above Roy, but speed has lowered his position. Williams (6-4 1/8, 225) ran the 40 five times (4.48, 4.49, 4.56, 4.58, and 4.64). He also clocked in at 1.60 seconds in the 10-yard dash. He did a 36-inch vertical jump, a 9-foot-11 long jump, and recorded a 4.34 in the short shuttle and a 7.01 in the cone drill. This player is a lot like Jerry Rice in that his time is not as impressive as his build-up speed.
  17. Phillip Rivers                      QB     6-5, 224         North Carolina State (4.95)  Mel- Accurate and smart; strong leader with great instincts.  Four and 0 in Bowl games in college, and is a winner with the most accurate arm in the draft. Rivers measured 6-5 at the combine but measured 6-4¾ here. He weighed 224 pounds. He ran his 40s in 4.99, 4.97 and 4.95, and also ran the 10-yard dash in 1.71. There were times that were not as fast as the ones we put up there, including one at 5.10 for the 40, but it's our policy to use the best times. He added a 32½-inch vertical, a 9-0 long jump, a 4.34 short shuttle and a 7.34 three-cone drill. He also threw to three receivers, including Jerricho Cotchery, and two running backs. Our sources informed us that he was very accurate.
  18. Dunta Robinson                 CB      6-0, 185          South Carolina (4.34)   Mel- Excellent feet and great ball skills.  Come draft time speed can become the deciding factor, so he may jump over Poole. Has great feet and quickness. Separating Poole and Robinson seems to be a matter of taste, they are that closely rated.
  19. *Shawn Andrews             OT      6-5, 366          Arkansas  Mel- Massive (6-5, 360) and a tremendous run-blocker.  Dominating run blocker, who has weight problem. Could be best RT in the league, or eat himself out of the league. With lefty Vick at QB, Falcons may have to take him.
  20. Jonathan Vilma                   ILB    6-0.5, 233      Miami (4.54)  Mel- Team's leading tackler the past two seasons. Great college player who is horribly undersized. Best combo of quickness, intelligence and instincts of any Linebacker in the draft.   Vilma was 6-0½, 233 pounds and had a 4.61 second average in the 40. He also put up the 225-pound bar 23 times. He had a 10-foot-1 long jump, a 37-inch vertical, and wowed scouts with his shuttle times of 4.20 in the short shuttle, 11.48 in the long shuttle and 6.67 in the three-cone drill.
  21.  *Kevin Jones                    RB      6-0, 218 4.38 Virginia Tech  Mel- Tremendous blend of quickness and power.   Speed and size combo unmatched in NFL, but ran a 4.6 and is plummeting. He needs to run faster to get back into the first round. I like Jackson for his Size and Quickness, and Jones for his Speed. Seems to be dropping. The Pats may be choosing between both backs at 21, which really shows the ridiculous depth of this years first round. Both should be top ten picks, and neither will be. Jones (5-11 5/8, 224) ran his 40s in 4.61, 4.63 and 4.65. He had a 37-inch vertical, a 9-9 long jump, 18 reps, a 4.10 short shuttle and a 7.17 three-cone drill. Jones' time was slower than expected, but he did not get out of his start well. More than anything, he impressed people with his ability to catch the football. He was really good at running routes and catching the ball.
  22.  D.J. Williams                     LB     6-1, 250           Miami   Williams was 6-0¾, weighed 250 pounds and had an average 40 time of 4.55 seconds. Williams added a 9-foot-9 in the long jump, a 38-inch vertical jump, a time of 4.05 seconds in the short shuttle, 11.40 in the long shuttle and 7.0 flat in the three-cone drill. Due to a pectoral muscle ailment, Williams did not bench.
  23. *Michael Clayton              WR     6-2, 209          LSU (4.54)  Mel- Tremendous toughness and athletic ability. Clayton ran identical 4.54s in the 40. He had a complete workout at the combine.
  24. *Chris Gamble                  CB      6-1.5, 198      Ohio State (4.45)   Mel-A gifted athlete with good recovery speed.  Has Athleticism, but has not put it all together.
  25. Ben Troupe                        TE     6-4, 262          Florida (4.68)  Mel- A gifted athlete and imposing figure (6-4¼, 260). Troupe (6-4 3/8, 262) ran his 40s for two times of 4.68. He also had a 38½-inch vertical, a 10-4 long jump, did 17 reps, ran a 4.30 short shuttle and a 7.10 three-cone drill. He also was impressive in his positional workout drills.
  26. Marcus Tubbs                   DT    6-4, 318            Texas (4.96)  Tubbs (6-4¼, 318) ran a 4.96 to a 5.10 in the 40. They wanted to run him a third time but he was worried he'd pull up. He added a 4.66 short shuttle and a 7.77 three-cone drill. He did not do the vertical, opting to stand on what he did at the combine.
  27. Michael Boulware              LB/S    6-2, 227           Florida State (4.47) Similar in many ways to Boss Bailey last year, only concerns about his knee wil not keep him out of first round. Boulware (6-2 1/8, 227) ran his 40s in 4.50 and 4.47. He had a 39½-inch vertical jump, 10-foot-2 long jump, did 15 strength reps, 3.98 short shuttle and 6.52 three-cone drill. I think Boulware is the only person to run the short shuttle in under four seconds at his Pro Day (many did it at the combine). Boulware also worked out as a safety.
  28. *Justin Smiley                    OG    6-5, 305          Alabama Smiley (6-3¼, 302) ran 4.97 and 4.99 in the 40. He did 23 reps, had a 33½ vertical jump and an 8-foot-11 long jump. He ran the shuttles at the combine. He will be the first player to make a visit to the teams. He's heading for New England on March 31 and the 49ers on April 8. He could be an interesting pick for a lot of teams in the second round. NFL.COM The next lineman that seems to be rising fast is Alabama guard Justin Smiley. He may be advertised as a second-round prospect in most draft materials, but the coaches I spoke with love the guy after he worked out for them on campus and ran sub-5.0 in his 40s. They describe him as nasty, has the feet to pull, has a tremendous punch, and if he stayed in school, may have been the top lineman in the 2005 draft. Expect to see his name creeping into the late first round on many of the mock draft boards.
  29. Rashaun Woods                 WR      6-2, 202, 4.47 Oklahoma State A favorite of mine. If Pats took him at 21 I would not be upset! Though RB situation is such a disaster that the Pats can't pass on Jones or Jackson no matter what happens. Has great hands, and defeats opponents the Belichick way, with: Hard work, intelligence, route running, and film study. I think Belichick has to have him on his 1A list.
  30. Shawntae Spencer CB Pittsburg 6-1 180 4.33 Four year starter who is starting to get some credit. He ran 4.3 flat at his individual work out. Has aggressive ball-skills, and is an excellent cover man. Plus, his size speed ratio is tops.
  31. Vernon Carey                    OG   6-4.4, 335         Miami  A lot of Draftnics have Carey coming to NE, but I just don't see it.  Carey was 6-4 3/8, 335 pounds, did 30 reps in the strength lift and ran the 40-yard dash for an average of 5.33. His long jump was 7-foot-5, his vertical was 28 inches, he did a 5.0 in the short shuttle and a 8.10 in the three-cone drill. Has the versatility to play 4 O-Line positions, which can be invaluable in this age of Free Agency.
  32. Matt Ware                        CB/S  6-2 210           UCLA (4.48)  Ware (6-2¼, 210) ran his 40s in 4.48 and 4.54. He did a 39½-inch vertical, a 10-1½-inch long jump, a 4.34 short shuttle, an 11.50 long shuttle, a 7.23 three-cone drill and 15 reps.
  33. Lee Evans                          WR  5-11, 195, 4.35 Wisconsin /X   He will be a first round pick come draft day, but with TWO reconstructed knees you have to be concerned.  Evans ran pass routes for 45 minutes and not one ball touched the ground (no drops, in other words). He didn't do routes at the combine. He also ran a 4.02 short shuttle, a 6.74 three-cone drill and an 11.47 60-yard shuttle. One club representative was so impressed over Evans' workout that he called his team's head coach to tell him about it. I'd say that's a good sign.
  34. Ahmad Carroll                   CB  5-9, 185            Arkansas 4.31 (41 Inch)
  35. Greg Jones                         RB    6-1, 249           Florida State /X (4.55)  If completely healthy, and it appears he is, he would be a steal at 32. His domination at the Senior Bowl show he may finally be completely over devastating injury. Could easily be taken 32 by the Pats, especially if Belichick is as high on Strait as I'm hearing and takes him at 21. Jones (6-1¼, 249) ran the 40s in 4.65 and 4.62. He had a 38½-inch vertical jump, 9-foot-11 long jump and did 23 strength reps. Jones was also timed at 4.13 in the short shuttle and 7.03 in the three-cone drill.
  36. *Igor Olshansky                 NT   6-3, 325           Oregon (41 Reps)  Is working hard to get into the First round, and may have succeeded. He and Sopoaga may have worked their way into the conversation of second tear DT/NT's. He could be an interesting pick at 32. great strength and has interesting record as an inside pass-rusher. Olshansky (6-5 1/8, 318) did everything at the combine so all he did was get weighed, measured and worked out. At his Pro Day, Olshansky lifted the 225-pound strength bar 43 times! That bests the lifting done by Isaac Sopoaga, who lifted the bar 42 times at the combine. He was born in Russia and at the age of 3 moved to Vienna, then moved to America at 7.
  37. Jake Grove                        OC    6-3, 303           Virginia Tech   Mel- A rare first-round-caliber center.  Has it all at a most important position along OL. Titians will have a real difficult time passing on him. Best comparison in NFL Kevin Mawae: mean, smart, and strong.
  38. Dwan Edwards                   NT   6-3, 312          Oregon State (5.13)  I have him a little higher then I'm comfortable with, because I don't see him getting past Seahawks at 22.
  39. Ben Watson                       TE    6-3, 255            Georgia (4.46 34 Reps)  Watson (6-3 3/8, 255) ran a 4.46 in the 40 and did everything else at the combine.
  40. Derrick Strait                      CB   5-11, 198         Oklahoma (4.5)   Bad work outs have him dropping into second round. Rumors have Belichick spending a lot of time in a personal interview with Strait, and we all know he places interviews above all else, and reportedly is so entranced with him that they will NOT pass on him at 32. If the two running backs are gone, and he has given up on Ty Law he will draft Strait at 21. Strait (198 pounds), ran his 40s in 4.55 and 4.52, the short shuttle in 4.1 and the three-cone drill 6.65. He had a 35½-inch vertical jump and his broad jump was 9-11.
  41. Jacob Rogers                     OT   6-5, 305          Southern California   An old drafting adage- take Penn State Linebackers, and USC Offensive Tackles and you can't go wrong. Rogers ran one 10-yard dash, which was timed at 1.84 and 1.79 from different watches.
  42. Chris Perry                         RB    6-1, 220            Michigan
  43.  Marquise Hill                     DE     6-7, 295           LSU (4.9)   Another player I seem to be more impressed with then most. Has the size of a DT, and the quickness of a DE, plus plays with passion and speed. Can rush the passer and hold up against the run, may be prototype 3-4 Defensive End. Had a terrible workout and it looks like he has fallen out of the first round. Hill (6-6¾, 296) ran his 40s in 5.22 and 5.30. He had 23 strength reps, 30½-inch vertical jump, 9-foot long jump. He did not run any of the shuttles because of a pulled hamstring.
  44. *Antwan Odom                DE      6-5, 275          Alabama (4.75)  Speed rusher whose lack of production has me more worried them most. he seems to be destined for the first round, but is to much of a risk for my taste.
  45. Karlos Dansby                   LB    6-5, 235            Auburn Dansby (6-3 3/8, 247) ran his 40s for times of 4.60, 4.65 and 4.63. He had a 10-0 long jump, a 34½-inch vertical and 15 strength lifts. He did a 4.49 short shuttle and a 7.53 three-cone drill. Dansby is an interesting case -- two years ago he weighed 215 and last year he weighed 230. Now he's 247 pounds -- he's gained 32 in two years. Some people think it's a little too much too soon, but he'll be able to carry that weight eventually.
  46. *Donnell Washington         DT    6-6, 320            Clemson
  47. Isaac Sopoaga                    NT   6-3, 315            Hawaii  (42 Reps)  Amazing size and strength as caused me to think he may be the prototype NT, and a second round steal.
  48. Michael Jenkins                  WR   6-4, 218          Ohio State (4.6) Had it all in college except QB. His size speed and hands are comparable to any WR in draft, but lack of production may cause him to drop into the second round.
  49. J.P. Losman                      QB   6-3, 215, 6.61   Tulane  Arm Vs. Attitude, which will win out is the question of where he will be taken.
  50. Keary Colbert                   WR  6-1, 200            USC (4.43)   Colbert ran his 40s twice and was timed from a low of 4.43 to 4.52 by different watches. He had a time of 1.58 in the 10-yard dash, a 36-inch vertical jump, 4.18 short shuttle and 6.94 three-cone drill.
  51. Devery Henderson            WR     5-11, 196        LSU (4.36)  Henderson (5-11¼, 196) ran his 40s in 4.38 and 4.36. He had a 35½-inch vertical jump, 10-foot-3 long jump, 4.27 short shuttle, 11.37 long shuttle and 6.78 three-cone drill.
  52. Ted Lehman                       LB   6-2, 237           Oklahoma (4.55) Butkus and Bednarik award winner. Had 323 tackles, 209 solo, and 47 behind the line of scrimmage. Teams are saying he could play both Inside and Outside Linebacker so Pats interest has to be on the rise. Lehman (237 pounds) ran the 40 for an average of 4.55. He did the short shuttle in 4.20, the three-cone drill in 6.85, and that's it. He did not lift but did have an impressive workout.
  53. Dontarrious Thomas           LB       6-2.5, 244       Auburn 4.57   The definition of a Belichick type player. Won the Off-Season Conditioning award as a Sophomore and a Senior. Graduating with a degre in MIS. Oh yeah, he also had 350 career tackles, 197 solo, and 5 interceptions. If they think he can play inside, he could be an interesting 2nd round pick for the Pats, and I don't seem them passing on him at 63. Thomas (6-2 5/8, 244) ran his 40s in 4.54 and 4.58. He added a 39-inch vertical and a 7.39 in the three-cone drill, and that's all he did since he also worked out at the combine.
  54. *Sean Jones                       FS    6-1, 215          Georgia (4.5)  Jones (6-1¼, 215) ran twice for 4.57 and 4.55. He did not do any jumps here (did a 36½-inch vertical and 10-2 long at the combine). He had a 4.05 short shuttle, an 11.13 long shuttle, a 6.90 three-cone drill and 16 reps.
  55. Jason Babin                        DE  6-5, 265           Western Michigan (4.67) His amazing sack record and speed may have moved him into the first round.
  56. Daryl Smith                        ILB   6-2, 235          Georgia Tech /X   Mel- Intense, instinctive and football-savvy.
  57.  Darnell Dockett                  DT   6-4, 285          Florida State /OF   Had a lot of problems while in college, I can guarantee he will not be a Patriot, but he will probably go in the first round.
  58. Tatum Bell                          RB    5-11, 212       Oklahoma State (4.37)   Is flying up the charts, with great speed and just enough size. May be a first rounder when all is said and done.
  59. Will Poole                         CB     6-0, 190         USC  (4.6 30-inch vert)  Mel- A fast riser with good ball skills. Covers like a corner and hits like a safety. Had some problems at BC, but seems to have overcome them. Had terrible workouts, and is the draft fastest faller. Mel rated him now as Mid-second/early-third.
  60. *Chris Snee                       OG     6-2, 314         Boston College
  61. Michael Turner                   RB   5-11, 228         Northern Illinois (4.5)
  62. Demorrio Williams              LB     6-2, 232         Nebraska (4.45- forty) Made a fortune at the combine. he played last season at 211 pounds and was seen as a Safety by most teams. Showed up at the combine weighing in at 232 pounds and ran an astonishing 4.45, and still has enough athleticism to move to Safety. May have moved into the second round.
  63. Keiwan Ratliff                    CB    5-10, 180        Florida
  64. Nathan Vasher                   CB     5-11, 180       Texas
  65. Richard Colclough             CB     5-11, 185        Tusculum
  66. Ernest Wilford                   WR 6-4, 220            Virginia Tech
  67. Chad Lavalais                   DT    6-3, 290            LSU   Seems to be slipping, and could fall to Pats at 56. Is more of an interior pass rusher then NT, but is well versed in Belichick two-gap system and might be a steal in the second round.
  68. Tony Pape                         OT     6-6, 305         Michigan
  69. Johnnie Morant                  WR    6-4, 224       Syracuse (4.45)  Morant (6-4 1/8, 224) ran 4.45 and 4.46 in his 40s, added an 11.66 in the long shuttle and a 7.12 in the short shuttle, and didn't do any jumps because he did them at Indy.
  70. *Devard Darling                 WR  6-3, 210          Washington State
  71. Bob Sanders                      SS    5-8, 200, 4.36 (41.5 Inch) Iowa
