The Los Alamos Shrine Club is a constituent unit of
the Ballut Abyad Shriners, in
Albuquerque, New Mexico. Membership is
open to all Master Masons holding a proficiency card or those who have been
Master Masons for at least six months.
What is the Shrine?
The Shrine of North America is perhaps best known for
its colorful parades, circuses and clowns. But there is also a serious side to
this international fraternity of approximately 450,000 men belonging to 191
Shrine Temples throughout North America.
For over 75 years, the Shrine has operated a network of specialized
hospitals that treat children with orthopedic problems, burns and spinal cord
injuries, up to their 18th birthday, free of charge.
To date, more than 600,000 children have received
expert, no cost medical care at Shrine Hospitals. All transportation and lodging costs for the
child and one parent are also covered by the Shrine. If you know of a child who might benefit from
this program, please contact the Los Alamos Shine Club
or call toll free 1-800-237-5055.
The best-known symbol of Shrinedom is the distinctive
red fez that Shriners wear at official functions. Because Shriners are men who
enjoy life, fun is a large part of the Shrine and the activities that help
support the Shrine's philanthropy. Most Shrine Centers sponsor Shrine Clubs,
like the one in Los Alamos, and special units, such as the motor corps, band or
clown units and many other units of
interest. They share in the camaraderie, deep friendships and good fellowship
that are all part of being a Shriner.
In addition to its philanthropic and fraternal
activities, our local club sponsors the Los Alamos Motor Patrol, a crack
(up?) parade unit comprising a fleet of high-performance go carts, a vintage Model-T
pickup, and a select squadron of highly-trained, agile, precision drivers. License suspended? Have trouble getting car insurance? This could be your outfit!
