Now with  125 local boat launch listings in the Ottawa and surrounding area.!

Sorry for taking so long to update the site. Been through some personal issues lately but am back now

Hello all Ottawa Area Boaters.

Send any and all boat launch ramp information and I will post them here.   Click Here

Hi, my name is John Thompson and I am trying to compile a list of ALL boat ramps in the Ottawa and surrounding area. I am an avid fisherman/boater (catch and release) and am always trying to find new water. Please send me directions to any boat launches you may know about. Include whether there is a launch fee or not, what type (paved, concrete or natural) and what size boat you think could get in and out. I will post them here and anywhere else if anyone wants them.

I reside in Kanata, Ontario but I can include any boat ramp locations if you wish. Just send them my way!

If you are not sure of where the boat ramp is or which area the lake is I suggest using www.mapquest.com to give you a general idea of location.

Black Donald Lake

119 It can be approached from Ottawa traveling west via Hwy 17, Hwy 508 and secondary Black Donald Road or traveling south via Hwy 7, Hwy 511 and secondary Black Donald Road.

There is a public launch available on the north side of the lake off of Black Donald Road, but it is in terrible condition. It's natural with a mesh reinforcement to reduce erosion, but it does not appear to have been maintained for years. There is a large drop before the water's edge (about 1.5 foot drop) and then another drop about 6 feet out. It's very steep and has been abused over the years, resulting in deep ruts. No one should even think about trying to launch there without a 4x4.

-As you approach Balaclava, you will come to a bridge/dam, the boat launch is on your left.
launch is gravel and the ground is pretty solid in and out of the water.
-once in the water, it gets deep enough pretty fast.
Free, limited parking

Special Notes

* Note # 1* Watch river depth, there are some shallow spots but you can get through.
* Note #2* Lew from Deep River used it this summer. He writes "It is natural sand ramp and is fairly shallow water.  I had no problem with my 17' Starcraft with 75 Merc on a roller trailer but a bunk trailer would be iffy because your vehicle would be in the water to be able to float your boat off the bunks."
* Note #3* Use with caution; it's in awful shape. It's caused more scrapes and scratches to boats and trailers than anything else.
The launch is concrete and there is a concrete wharf beside it. The problem is that the water levels are unpredictable (at the whim of the overflow allowed at the hydro dam). I have seen the water fluctuate a couple feet in a day. Usually the water levels are very low which makes the concrete wharf unusable (too high). Once launched, head to the right of the small island with engine trimmed up. At the far side of the island, there are navigation buoys. Follow them out to the river.

UPDATE:The marker buoys have gone from the main harbour section. This means that a newcomer is highly likely to hit the massive shoal that runs up the centre. If you want to launch in Fitzroy:

From dock, go straight out from dock until central between small island on left and large island ahead, turn left and go slow between the 2. (trim up to be safe). When past the edge of large island on right, turn right hugging the island about 20ft out. now sight a point between pylon on island in middle of harbour and island on right and follow that line until end of third bay then cut across pointing at the pylon on the dam side. Once across you can safely head up to the dam at about 50 ft from shore. Do not try to cross before the 3rd bay, you can stand up in the middle of the harbour when the water is low.

Basically, if you want to launch in Fitzroy, try to go with someone who knows the way on your first trip.

* Note #4* Word of warning from Mark C. "Do not turn into the fry stand from the hill or you will bottom out your tow vehicle and if you keep going you will tear you motor off your boat, even if it is in the stored position with you transom saver on". There are many scars on the road to attest to this fact and from personal experience it is true.
* Note #5* Special thanks to Rene for this info. This boat launch site could be # 89.It's in the west end of the city limits of Cornwall Ontario. We call this "Above The Dam" site because it's the head water for the Morse\ Shanders dam, which goes across the St- Lawrence River from Canada to the United States. The launch site can not be seen from the Hwy #2.The Location of this site is also a park named Guidon Park. The entrance to the park and launch site is west on Hwy#2.The name of entrance to the park is Trillium Drive. Once you have entered the park we will see the water, which is lake St-Lawrence. The boat launch is made up of small concrete squares laid down with gravel between. There are two floating wide wooden docks both sides of the ramp The ramp is not to steep at high water but changes with water levels. Water level under the docks remain at or about 4-5 feet.
This is a public free launch built in partnership with a local LUNKER fish club and the City of Cornwall. All roads and parking are gravel. There is much park area with green space, washroom, play ground, and picnic area with trees. The FISHING is the best, i.e., BASS-PIKE-WALLEYE and perch. The waters run sallow and deep. As you many know this is man made flood area, with old creeks, and favorite old timers' spots. Large wide deep boats have been launch from this ramp.
* Note #6*

The boat launch at Constance Lake is public (Kanata) and free, however all around the launch is private, this includes a parking lot for a restaurant which charges $5 for parking.  You can park on the side of the access road for free.

The proprietor of the Seaplane base, fishing lodge and restaurant frequently pretends that you have to pay $5 to launch, but he's really charging you for the use of his parking lot.

The single narrow ramp is paved not concrete with good depth and angle, suitable for large or small boats if you can reverse in a straight line.

*Note #7*

Rick was at Muskrat lake last week and after launching his boat he found
there to be a 4 to 6 inch drop at the bottom of the concrete ramp.  His truck is rear wheel drive only and he had the rear tires in the water to get our boat on. The concrete can become slick and you may lose traction as the lip works well as a wheel chock. Boater's beware or you may get stuck if your tow vehicle has not got sufficient
power or traction!
