The Link
The Alumni Newsletter of SPHINX
From the President

On April 25, 2003 the 97th Class of Sphinx proudly became a part of one of our university’s greatest traditions.  The twenty-four new links joined together with a great sense of honor, humility, and excitement about the upcoming year.

The 96th Class of Sphinx gave our new class a charge that afternoon.  Amidst the excitement and anticipation that surrounded Linking Day, we were given a mission:  to form bonds with each other, to continue to lead by example within Ohio State, and to seize every moment of the year we have been given.

As you will see in this edition of The Link, Sphinx 97 is certainly well on its way to fulfilling that charge.  We have advanced, upheld old traditions and created new, supported our fellow links, continued to maintain leadership roles on campus, and have grown to learn that Sphinx is not simply outstanding student leaders, but rather the collective that forms when those individuals come together.  We are truly grateful for this unique opportunity that, in many ways, defines our final year at OSU, and we look forward to the memories that are yet to come.

Go Bucks.

Summer Advances
An Advance (or Two) To Remember
Josh Harraman and David Tynan

Let the bonding begin! Our story begins with the 97th class of SPHINX adventuring into the great unknown. This past summer, the links took part in two advances. The first advance took us into the wilderness that is Hocking Hills and the Colonel’s Quarters. The second advance brought us to the great city of Cincinnati where we relished in the luxuries of the Tippett and Strohman estates.

The adventure to Hocking Hills took place June 20-22 with 12 links in attendance. Upon everyone’s arrival to “the Hills,” we partook in our first meal together: a fine gourmet spread at the Pizza Crossing. Once our group reunited at the cabin, we played an intense game of Taboo in which Mikal Nolan demonstrated her fine art of oratory. Mikal’s team lost every game. The next morning we hiked the Hills of Hocking where we found Ohio ties to SPHINX- a rock projection shaped like the head of a Sphinx. We adventurers hiked off the beaten path and blazed our own trail, where we were able to climb between mountain passes and faced many animals. We enjoyed a lunch of PB&J- Yum! That night we cooked out and were joined by more links. We then had a bonfire and more Taboo. Sunday we went canoeing where Becky Tippett decided she would become Cleopatra of the Hocking and not have to paddle. That worked well for her until after lunch when she had to run through the river to get back to her canoe that “accidentally” left her. We returned to Columbus where we went back to summer school, work, internships, and study abroads, but we were eagerly awaiting Summer Advance #2.
