ABOUT OKINAWA SHORIN RYU Karate originated on Okinawa which is the largest island of the Ryukyu archipelago. It was a product of the ancient Okinawan culture. Okinawa Shorin-Ryu Karate is the oldest karate fighting style. Its founder, Soon Matsumura, was a disciple of Kanga Sakugawa. Master Matsumura called his style Sheri-Te. Anko Its, his most famous disciple gore the style its present shape. His successor, master Shoshin Cibana,10th DAN, changed the name Sure-Te into Okinawa Shorin-Ryu and he founded Okinawa Shorin-Ryu Karate do Association. At the moment the Association is headed by Hanshi Satsuma Midair,10 th DAN- a successor of master Cibana. One of the best instructors of Shorin-Ryu teaching outside Okinawa is KYOSHI Kenyu Chinen,8 DAN a disciple of master Shoshin Cibana,10th DAN, Sugar Nakazato,10th DAN and Satsuma Midair,10th DAN.

The basic kata of Okinawa Shorin-Ryu Karate is Naihanchi. Natural movements and natural breathing are two characteristic features of Shorin-Ryu. Positions are short and high, blocks are very hard and short. The angular position of hips and their wore are very important for supporting blocking, striking and kicking. The movement forward against the opponent is preformed at the angle of 45°. Shorin-Ryu isn't limited to a passive model of self defense.
