What was the INSPI(RED) night at the Aloha Stadium?

  • Support for (RED)™ on the day of the U2 concert in Honolulu, on December 9; the last show of their Vertigo Tour.
  • Spreading the word about (RED)™ to help the poorest people on this planet to get what they need to simply survive.
  • Show our appreciation to Bono, Edge, Adam and Larry for the inspiration they are.
More about (RED)™

Not too long ago, Bono and Bobby Shriver, Chairman of DATA, launched a new initiative to help those people who are dying from a treatable disease like AIDS, just because they don't have the money to buy the medicine.

This initiative, (RED)™, takes advantage of the enormous power that consumers in wealthy countries have. The idea is simple, if you buy a (RED)™ product a part of the money will go directly to the poorest people on this planet; to provide them with the medicine to keep them alive. Your choice can make a difference, and one by one we can make a tremendous change in this world.

U2 inspires

U2 have been an inspiration to us as well as to so many in the past few decades, both with their music and their involvement in many great causes. From LiveAid to Live8, from Jubilee 2000 to DATA and the ONE campaign, not to forget Amnesty International and Greenpeace, U2 has always INSPI(RED) us in following the journey of equality.

As Bono said at Live8 in London: "We can't fix every problem, but the ones we can, we must..."

What happened on the INSPI(RED) night?

The idea was to wear (RED) clothing, or anything with red color, to support the (RED) campaign (read the original announcement page). A group of very dedicated people worked hard to spread the word. Our initiative appeared in the Honolulu Advertiser the week before the show. The official (BLOG)RED web site wrote in detail about our initiative, and they were very pleased with it. The event was also mentioned in the news at various U2 related web sites (for example: @U2.com, Interference), and people spread the word like a ripple in a pond. The main goal of the event had already been accomplished before December 9....

On the day of the concert we saw a huge number of people in the line at the Aloha Stadium, who were wearing the (RED) shirts, or any other red clothing. It looked liked the message had indeed arrived to many, many people. We handed out red glow sticks to be held up during the song One, and Spanish U2 fans handed out red balloons to be held up during the intro of the show.

Rocko, the lead singer of the support act Rocko and the Devils was wearing an INSPI(RED) shirt during their performance to support the cause. After that performance, Colette from (RED) came all the way down to the field to thank us. She and the rest of the (RED) crew, including the founders Bono and Bobby Shriver, were amazed by the huge number of people wearing (RED).

During U2's performance, the stadium did indeed have inspiring (RED) moments, with the red balloons during the intro, the red glow sticks during One, and of course the thousands of (RED) shirts. Bono referred to our INSPI(RED) night at the Aloha Stadium initiative during the song Beautiful Day: "Aloha Stadium, a sea of (RED)".

After the show, the initiative was reported in the Honolulu Advertiser news paper. They titled their concert review "A spiritual gathering for fans", while the Honolulu Star-Bulletin mentioned the initiative in their article "U2 embraces all corners in an inspired, intimate Aloha Stadium spectacle". The initiative was also reported in detail at the (BLOG)RED web site. A quote from the blog: "Although I knew what they had planned, I never imagined that it would be THAT (RED). There were literally thousands of people wearing (RED)....It was one of those moments when you looked around and knew you were not alone -- there are a lot of people like us out there and when we all come together anything is possible".

A big thank you to all the people who supported this initiative, and for the ones who worked so hard to make this possible.
