George (Goetz) (Kitts) Gates was earliest Gates member
to come to Ohio (Belmont county). He was born on
September 08, 1759 and died November 28, 1842 in
Powhaten Point, Belmont Co., Ohio. He is buried in
Boger Cemetery (Cat's Run Cemetery), York Twp.,
Belmont Co., Ohio. He emigrated from Germany to
eastern PA., then to Washington Co., PA., in 1790,
then to Washington and Belmont Cos. in Ohio, near the
boundary with present day Monroe Co. (George Gates
(settled) September 28, 1804). Many family member also
moved to Monroe Co.
