Onmyoji at work

These are real onmyojis in 2005, conducting a ceremony at the site where a building was about to get built.

They can't do what onmyojis in the past did -- choosing a site -- because of the obvious city plan and shortage of land in the cities.

But they still can offer otherworldly protection of the alloted site, and drive off whatever evil spirit around.

If you don't even know what 'onmyoji' is, click here.

Onmyoji ceremony

The most famous 'onmyoji' in the history of Japan is Abe Seimei of Kyoto, who lived around the Heian era. Click here for the real Abe Seimei. Click here for the most famous silverscreen Abe, the actor Nomura Mansai.

Onmyoji, miko, yamabushi

In rare occasions such as the ritual at Kumano, onmyoji collaborates with other personnels of Japanese beliefs. The Shinto priest-onmyoji leads the way, carrying a branch of poppy. Behind him is a junior onmyoji bearing a large gohei. Behind that onmyoji is a Shinto shrine maiden (miko) in formal dancing attire. Behind her are the yamabushis and their large shells. See yamabushi page.
