The first annual Bob Esbensen Fish For A Wish Championship netted $2579 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation
of Northern Illinois. On June 10th the areas most charitable anglers met for a fishing contest
on the banks of beautiful Lake Arlington. Anglers were given the opportunity to drum up pledges prior
to the event. John Tobin, a firefighter from Elgin, was the Top Dollar Award winner by soliciting $1134
in donations. Jim Robinson was second with $135 and Bernice Bradley was third with $122.
All anglers caught fish. The top three catches were turned in by Mick Thill with 43 pounds,
Derek Aniolkowski with 37.7 pounds and Penny Smit with 26.5 pounds. Twenty-one anglers competed
and ranged in ages from 9 years to 72 years. Crappie and bluegill made up the bulk of the catch.
A total of 173 pounds of fish were caught and released in the four hour event.
All the contestants got prizes in appreciation for their efforts. Many thanks to all those who

Lunch maker Gloria Esbensen. Hahnz Teope of Aurora Sports who supplied tackle prizes and helped
young anglers catch more fish. Arlington Cat Clinic supplied the trophies and insurance for the
event and Northwest Match Anglers provided memberships for new anglers.
