On May 20, 1986, Kelly Parsons, as Miss California USA in 1986, appeared in the 35th Annual Miss USA Pageant held at the Miami Convention Center in Florida. Kelly ended up placing a very respectable 4th runner up (actress Halle Berry was 1st runner up and Christy Fichtner was crowned Miss USA 1986). The following is a transcript of what Kelly had to say during the interview portion of the show. Each of the 10 finalists were brought up to talk to Bob Barker. Kelly went first:
BB: All right, you have met our 10 semi-finalists and now it's time for you to get to know them. This is our interview competition where the young ladies don't know what I'm going to say and where I can assure you after 20 years I have no idea what they might say. As in all of our competition tonight, only you at home will get to see the score each contestant gets from our celebrity panel of judges, and we're going to begin with you, Miss California. Kelly Parsons, 22 [sister Kim screaming in the background], she lives in Chatsworth and Kelly, this is a homecoming for you, isn't it? Explain that to our audience.
KP: Yes, it is. I'm originally from Miami and I was born in Dade County [applause]. I'm proud to be back. It's been 10 years, to this month.
BB: Now I'm sure that everyone would like to know what you have planned for the future. What do you want to do with your life?
KP: Continue acting and improve on it. And hopefully make a career of it.
BB: I was talking with someone who told me that your sister is REALLY pulling for you to win this, is that .... [Kim screaming] ... there she is right up there!
KP: It is! [laughing and pointing in the audience]
BB: Is that your sister?
KP: That's my sister, the shy one.
BB: Is that family loyalty?
KP: It's family loyalty, but I told her if I was fortunate enough to be Miss USA, I'd give her my other car since she doesn't have one [laughing; Kim screaming]
BB: She's desperate for wheels up there, isn't she? Thank you, Miss California.
KP: Thank you very much.
