Santa Fe trains in Hemet, California
This website is provided for all who may be interested in the branchline operation of the AT&SF San Jacinto district--the 20 mile section between San Jacinto and Perris. The pictures that follow were taken in and around my hometown of Hemet, CA during the 1980's and 90's. Some of these scenes are now gone forever--I now share what I have seen with the loyal Santa Fe fan (and all interested railfans). Welcome, check-out the not too distant past: branchline railroading in my hometown.
This "glossy kodachrome" GP30 was the center of three units on this train--between San Jacinto and Hemet--just leaving town with loaded railcars of potatoes. 1984.
Hemet often hosted freshly rebuilt locomotives out of the San Bernardino shops; This is a mid 1980 view shows a spotless GP20 in front of L.P.Denney in Hemet. For a view of another freshly rebuilt unit, a GP30--click here:
Here the local had just completed the delivery of an insulated boxcar of Coors beer to the L.P.Denney distributorship.
In 1992 this was the view at the end of track in San Jacinto; The Agri-Empire building is the source of seasonal potato shipments out of the valley. The old freight building on the right is all that remained of the 1890 San Jacinto depot, it was bulldozed in summer of 2002.

By 1987, waycars were rarely seen on mainline trains. At the time, this caboose could still be seen attached to the local.
