Officers from the Clayton Police Department, Morehead City Police Department, Wake County Sheriff's Office, and the State Bureau of Investigations were attempting to arrest a drug dealer in an undercover sting operation. As the take down of the suspect began, Lt. Carey and other Officers surrounded the suspect's vehicle as he entered a local BoJangles parking lot. As the suspect realized the situation he attempted his getaway, he placed his vehicle into reverse, and ran down Lt. Carey, who was at the rear of the vehicle.
As the situation unfolded, the suspect backed completely over her, and was shot & killed by other officers on the scene. Lt. Carey later died at the Wake Medical Center in Raleigh.
She is survived by a caring Mother & Father, a loving Husband, and 2 beautiful children.
