The Unofficial Site
National Supermarkets - St. Louis
Home
History Stores

Welcome to the
unofficial site of the St. Louis
division of National Supermarkets. My interest in the National stores
has fueled my creation of this site. Hopefully the site will be of some
interest to you. If you have not visited it, please go to my St. Louis Grocery
group on MSN.
The
first National Supermarkets
chain, owned by Loblaw Cos.
of
Canada, was purchased
by Schnucks
in June of 1995.
They were forced to sell 18 National Stores and 6 Schnucks Stores in
order to preserve grocery competition in the St. Louis area. A group of
former National Managers bought 23 stores; the 24th was bought by Wild
Oats Markets Inc. of Boulder, Colorado. The new company, Family Company
of America, reopened the 23 stores in March 1996 using the National
name. Unfortunately, the second National Markets chain went bankrupt in
April 1999. Read
more about National's
History.
You can also read
about the National Tea Co. on the Groceteria
site - some of my store pictures are featured!
Welcome again to this site. There
is a lot of information out there
about the old National chain, and I hope you find the information on
this site useful. However, there is more information that I would like
to be able to add to this site; the Stores
page shows some of the information
I am trying to locate. I hope that
you will let me
know if there is something
you know that is not yet on the site.
Thank you in advance for your help!
This site is not affiliated
with any grocery store chains. It is
intended to be informative for those who are interested in learning
about the National grocery store chain.
