Live at the Continental in New York City, New York 6/8/02

You gotta love New York.  Some people love the Broadway shows.  Some love walking in Central Park.  Everybody's got something that keeps them here or keeps them coming back.  Well, my friends, I'm here for the rock n roll!  Making their first trip to New York in about 10 years, a rather small crowd at the Continental near St. Mark's Place was treated to an old school, traditional, good time rock n roll show when the London Quireboys took the stage at midnight on a Saturday night in June 2002.

The band never really hit it big, but their first record "A Bit of What You Fancy" is loved by all who have heard it.  They were unfortunate because they have no contemporarites.  They didn't sound like Poison or Motley Crue.  They didn't look like Firehouse or Def Leppard.  They had an English style (they are English!) similar to Faces and the Rolling Stones.

"Sweet Mary Ann", "Hey You", "7 o'clock" and "I Don't Love You Anymore" sounded great in 1990.  Believe me, they sound even better now!  Not to mention the band, particularly lead singer, Spike, even look better now.  They defied the trends and actually lost weight as they got older!

The new songs from "This is Rock n Roll" sounded great too.  The title track rocks (obviously!) and the ballad, "Searchin'" is as touching as it gets.

After the show, there was the traditional backstage party where I got a chance to talk with the band.  I said to Spike that it would've been fitting if they had played "King of New York" from their second record.  He told me he couldn't play that song anymore because he sang it at his father's funeral and it would be too difficult to deal with.  I thought that was a good answer.  He kindly autographed the back of my business card for my good friend ROB ROCKER, who lives too far to make it out that night.

The night concluded at an underground club not too far from the club.  I'll keep it discreet to protect the guilty, but let me tell you, a good time was had by all.

Ladies and Gentlemen, "This is Rock n Roll"!
