Costuming Page: Jedi Robes
Jedi Robes: the most basic form of clothing in the SW universe.  Jedi robes are designed for comfort, practicality, and are meant to be simple.  The good thing about this is that it makes them somewhat easy to replicate!  For my husband's jedi robes, we chose to model them after Qui-Gon's, but we also chose to personalize them as far as colors, etc.  Each jedi is allowed the freedom to choose their own colors and styles, as long as they follow the same basic design.  We chose to use a brown color scheme: light tan, medium brown, and dark chocolate brown.  Here is my tutorial.

Part I.   The Undershirt:
The bottom layer of the Jedi cosume is the undershirt.  It is very similar to the Tunic, but it is slimmer fitting, and the wais is not as long.  The sleeves are also long and tight fitting at the wrists.  It is meant to be tucked into pants at the waist.  The undershirt should not be very bulky, in order to create a "streamlined" look under the tunic.  This picture shows a good view of the undershirt (click to enlarge):
For Colin's undershirt, I chose to use Muslin.  It is simple, has a great natural color, and the texture is good because it lays down flat.
I modified the pattern I used for the Tunic by cutting the sleeves on a diagonal, after measuring them to Colin's arm.  I also lengthened the sleeves so that they would be very long and bunch slightly at the wrists.

Part II. The Tunic:
The second layer of the jed costume is the Tunic.  It is very similar to the "Gi's" worn in martial arts.  The left part wraps over the right to create a "V" neckline.  The sleeves are loose and baggy, and are wider at the wrists than they are at the shoulders.  At the left is a good picture of Obi-Wan's
Phantom Menace Tunic (click to enlarge).
To make Colin's Tunic, I used Simplicity #9962:

I used a cotton/lycra blend fabric that I got off of the 50% off rack at Hancock Fabrics.  It is a light brownish-tan.  I had to modify the pattern a little bit by making the sleeves about twice as long, because the dressing gown sleeves are rather short.  I also made them a bit more baggy.  The tunic turned out very well, but if I could do it over again, I would make the opening to the sleeves more narrow.  It is a bit wider than Colin likes.  Below is a picture of our finished Tunic:

Part III. The Tabbords:
The Tabbords are the third part of the costume.  They are two strips of fabric that hang down in front and in back of the costume.  You can see these as well, in the Obi-Wan picture above.  To make these, I opted to make a vest that is one piece in back and two in front.  I used the same pattern as above (9962) and modified it, in order to make a similar cut and line.  We also used the same fabric as the tunic.  To sew it I simply made the back and front of the robe, without the sleeves.  And instead of stitching down the sides, I left them open and put in a seam.  So when laid flat, the Tabbords look like a "Y".  Here is a picture of the finished Tabbords:
