Welcome to my web site. Here you can find out about me, my music and the bands I play with. I hope you like what you find, and that you send me a message.

GENERAL BACKGROUND
Born in 1960, I began playing piano aged 6,  then  trumpet  aged 11.  I took up  Vintage Jazz in the late 1970s, and I became a fully professional musician in 1989. Now a multi-instrumentalist playing in assorted jazz styles I am regularly booked on  trumpet, cornet, tuba, flugelhorn and vocals. I am also booked on piano, and baritone horn, and of course to lead my own band.

STUDENT, NOVICE,  WRITER & TEACHER
I studied clasical music at Richmond FE College, but my studies suffered somewhat for my new found interest in jazz. There was a good Big Band there, and there were a lot of jazz sessions in local pubs. After receiving a typical grounding in pubs, jazz clubs and my own prototype jazz bands, I studied with Al Wynette (trumpeter with Joe Loss, Sid Phillips, Harry Gold) then  played and toured with the Grahame Humphreys Jazz Band, which was inspired by Chris Barber et al.  As soon as I turned fully professional I studied jazz piano & harmony with Peter Sander. Since then I have continued playing, but have also written music, taught brass, piano, jazz piano, and jazz studies. I living in W London, near Heathow (again) and I'm playing with assorted jazz ensembles throughout London and the home counties. I have a second home near Alicante in Spain.

My current  project is  the...

MIKE SUMMERS JAZZ BAND
(Jazz-Swing Trio/Quartet/Quintet)

I first formed the Mike Summers Jazz Band in 1989. The style and name have changed a few times, but the band goes on.  My reformed band has a flexible instrumentation, typically featuring trumpet, guitar, bass and sax or drums. It plays in and around London at private parties, promotions and corporate hospitality events.

MUSIC PHILOSOPHY

I believe that jazz should be interesting, but also sonorous and accessible. I like clear melodies, rich harmonies, rhythmic variety, timbre,  texture, light & shade.  Unlike some artists, I'm not cycnical about the jazz public, so I don't "patronize" audiences; instead I'm just grateful to have an audience's attention. My motto: Were in this together!

SUMMARY
I've returned to London where I am playing a lot of jazz again. Occasionally I'll be in Spain too. Freelance booking enquiries on trumpet and tuba are always welcome.
