![]() On March 20, there will be demonstrations in Washington, San Francisco, and Los Angeles, as well as other cities in the United States and abroad against the continuing occupation of Iraq. The date marks one year since the start of the assault on Iraq. The build up to the U.S. invasion and occupation provoked protests of millions of people throughout the world, to such an extent that the most prestigious of the American dailies, The New York Times, was moved to say that a new world power had emerged, the power of world public opinion. Even such massive protests did not deter a ruthless imperialist regime from its long-planned war of conquest. The U.S. rulers were also anxious to show off their advances in military technology. But their killing machine has not been able to achieve their objectives. Resistance continues in Iraq, and it is taking a constant toll of lives from the U.S. forces and their allies. Moreover, the hostility of the great majority of the population to U.S. domination has become evident. Public opinion in the United States and allied countries is increasingly resentful of the human and material cost of the occupation. As the leaflet issued by the four initiating organizations of the demonstrations in the United States says: Growing numbers of U.S. soldiers and their families are calling for the troops to be brought home NOW. These soldiers are being sent to kill and be killed for a war that was based on lies and fraud perpetrated by the Bush government. The four initiating organizations are International ANSWER, the Arab Muslim American Federation, the Free Palestine Alliance, the Muslim American Society Freedom Foundation, and the Muslim Student Association. Socialist Action has also endorsed the demonstrations, in response to the appeal of the initiators for the broadest possible backing. We urge all supporters of world peace, human rights, and the right of nations to self-determination to endorse these demonstrations. Additional information can be gotten from the International ANSWER web site (www.internationalanswer.org/campaigns/m20/index.html). The initiators have also made it clear that they see the March 20 demonstrations as a defense of the rights of the Palestinian people. The events will come only 10 days before the Day of the Land, the historic day of protests against the expulsions of the Palestinians from their land. In fact, the U.S. war on Iraq was also largely a blow against the Palestinian resistance. The U.S. rulers attempt to impose their right to occupy any country that they think threatens their interests, asserted nakedly in the case of Iraq, is a deadly danger to the right of self-determination, to any democratic international order, and therefore to the future of humanity. It is essential to oppose it and to support those who are opposing it.
