It's “all change” at MKMES, the time has come to (sadly) say good bye to the club track at Kingfisher Country Club. Any one who's visited our ground level track will know what a nice track it is and appreciate how much work members of the club have put in to make it such a pleasant site, but sadly for various reasons we find ourselves looking to set up some where else.
Several potential sites have been looked at but all have some problems, either with access, services, security, parking etc.
The site chosen for the new track is Caldecotte Lake in Milton Keynes. It seems to offer us most of what we need.
First of all its actually in Milton Keynes – which helps!
Secondly it has activities to attract people – i.e. People to ride our railway, and possibly new members for the club :-)
Thirdly – and most importantly – the MK Parks Trust are all in favour of it and have given us much encouragement and advice in setting up.
For this season (summer 2006) we have laid out our dual gauge portable track to see what the interest is – and there's been plenty! Although passenger numbers have not been record breaking we have taken a steady 20 or 30 fares each weekend and had a lot of interest from people, most of them think its a good idea, and probably picked up a couple of new members already.
Name of the new track?, what else but Milton Keynes Light Railway or MK Lightrailway – MKLR. This seems to be a popular and obvious choice.
Please feel free to pop along and say hello – we are trying to run every Sunday afternoon 12:00 – 16:00(ish) till September.Visit us on www.mklightrailway.co.uk
For any one who doesn't know us we are a model engineering club, mainly – at the moment – interested in trains and railways but with members who have built, or are building, all sorts - traction engines, aero engines, clocks etcc. We are always interested to meet other modelers and very happy to see samples of other peoples work. We are not all 'engineers', some of us just come along to 'play trains', others are involved in running the club and some just come for the tea (or beer)!
If you have any suggestions or ideas for the web site, why not
drop us a line via the link at the bottom of most of the pages!
If
you have a site and want to 'swap links', just send us an e-mail!
Where are
we ?
We are in the overflow car park near the
Caldecotte Arms pub – also known as the Windmill, about a 5
minute drive from Central Milton Keynes down the A5D
