12/12/00-Dan Wright is listed as the fifth best prospect in the White Sox organization by Baseball America.
12/8/00-The New York Mets signed Bubba Carpenter to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training.
10/27/00-Former Razorback Tom Pagnozzi will host the Tom Pagnozzi Golf Invitational at the Paradise Valley Athletic Club in Fayetteville. The money raised goes to help the Razorback baseball team. Kevin McReynolds, Ryan Lundquist, and David Walling, among others, are scheduled to attend.
October-Brad Bohannon is in Arizona in the White Sox instructional
camp.
Minor league free agents include: Mike Oquist, Scott
Pose, and Ryan Nye.
9/17/00-Eric Hinske and the West Tennessee Diamond Jaxx
won the Southern League Championship three games to two. Eric
hit three home runs in the playoffs.
9/14/00-The Montreal Expos announced that the Clinton Lumber Kings
(formerly of the Cincinnati Reds organization and home to Mark
Burnett and Ryan Lundquist) has become their high class
A team, replacing Cape Fear (former team of Cliff Lee)
who has been dropped from the Expos organization.
9/13/00-The Arkansas Travelers ended their contract with the St.
Louis Cardinals. They are now an Anaheim Angels organization.
9/4/00-The West Tennessee Diamond Jaxx announced their individual
team awards. Eric Hinske won the Robert's Jewelers Fans
Choice Award and "The 2300" Hitter of the Year.
9/1/00-Joe Jester was promoted from single A San Jose to
triple A Fresno.
8/28/00-Manager: Pellow's Suspension Not Related to Story.
8/25/00-Brad Bohannon was promoted from Bristol (R) to
Winston-Salem (A). Dan Wright pitched for Winston-Salem earlier
this year.
8/22/00-It is discovered that Kit Pellow has been suspended
indefinitely by Omaha for 'violating club policies.' This suspension
comes down the day after Kit was quoted in an article for SI.
WEST TENN (SOU) 1B HEE CHOI slugged a career-high three home runs
and 3B Eric Hinske homered twice as the Diamond Jaxx
crushed Chattanooga, 15-4. Choi, who matched a career high
with six RBI, launched a two-run homer in the first inning,
smacked a three-run blast to highlight a five-run fourth and drilled his
ninth home run of the season during the final frame. The 21-year-old
Choi, who was signed as a non-drafted free agent by the Cubs
in 1999, became just the second player in the Southern League
this season to belt three homers in one game as Michael Moore
of Greenville accomplished the feat against Carolina on July
31. Hinske hit a two-run shot in the first inning and added
a two-run blast to right field in the ninth.
8/21/00-Eric Hinske will play for the Mesa Solar Sox of
the Arizona Fall League, beginning October 3. The Arizona Fall
League has six teams with 30 players each, and each big league
organization sends six players to the league. The rosters are
usually a good indicator of who is held in high regard by the
organization.
8/19/00-CLINTON (MID) 2B MARK BURNETT's RBI single in the
bottom of the 12th inning gave the Lumberkings a 9-8 victory
over Michigan. OF CHRIS VAN ROSSUM led off the 12th with
his fourth base hit of the game and moved to third on SS
DYTARIOUS EDWARDS' only hit of the contest. Burnett, who
was a 20th-round pick of the Reds in 1999, followed with
his third single of the night as Clinton improved to 10-6
in extra-inning games this season. SS ANDY BEATTIE collected
season highs with five hits and four RBI for the Lumberkings.
A 35th-round selection by the Reds in 1998, Beattie had a
base hit in the opening inning, singled home a run in the
third and led off the sixth with a double and scored the third
run of the game later in the inning. The 22-year-old added an
RBI two-bagger in the seventh, a two-run single in the eight before
being intentionally walked with two runners already on base
in the bottom of the 10th.
8/18/00-Dan Wright picked up his first win at AA by pitching
seven and two thirds scoreless innings. He gave up two hits, walked
three, and struck out four.
8/17/00-Kit Pellow was
quoted in the August 21, 2000 issue of Sports Illustrated in Rick
Reilly's column on steroids in baseball.
8/14/00-Eric Hinske was one of seven members of the Chicago
Cubs minor league system selected to their season in the Arizona
Fall League which begins on October 3, 2000. The season runs from
early October through mid-November.
8/9/00-Eric Hinske had a double, a triple and two RBI as
the Diamond Jaxx Beat the Mobile Bay Bears 8-6. Hinske had an
RBI triple, his league-leading eighth, in the fourth inning
and an RBI double in the sixth to lead the Jaxx to their fourth
straight victory.
Ike Pohle was promoted from Staten Island, a short season
A team, to the Greensboro Bats, a higher class A team for the
Yankees.
8/2/00-SAN JOSE (CAL) C ANTHONY TURCO and 2B JOE JESTER
each had an RBI during the top of the 10th inning, lifting
the Giants past Bakersfield, 12-11. SS CARLOS MENDOZA led
off the 12th with a walk, stole second and advanced to third when C
GUILLEMO RODRIGUEZ's throw went into center field. OF RYAN PINI
drew a walk and Turco gave San Jose a one-run lead with an
RBI single into right field. DH CLAY GREENE singled to load
the bases and after OF SCOTT DAELEY struck out looking, Jester,
who was a seventh-round pick of the Giants in 1999, stroked a base
hit into right, giving the Giants a 12-10 lead. The 22-year-old
Jester finished the night 4-for-5 with a pair of RBI
and four runs scored, tying his career high. 1B SEAN MCGOWAN
went 5-for-6 with a pair of doubles and five RBI for San
Jose. 3B JULIO CORDIDO, who had an RBI single in the bottom of
the 10th for the Blaze, highlighted a six-run eighth inning
with his first career grand slam.
8/1/00-CLINTON (MID) OF RYAN LUNDQUIST hit a pair of two-run
homers in a 4-2 victory over Lansing. His second shot of
the game and 13th of the season snapped a 2-2 tie in the
eighth inning.
7/31/00-READING (EAST) LHP JIMMY OSTING pitched a four-hit, 2-0
shutout versus Norwich in a game shortened to five innings
by rain. Osting, who struck out four and walked three, gave
up three doubles but did not allow any runner to reach third
base in posting his second consecutive win. RHP DAVE WALLING,
the Yankees' first-round pick in 1999, yielded two runs and
a pair of hits, walking one and striking out a pair, over
five innings for the complete-game loss.
Dan Wright was promoted, from Winston-Salem to the Birmingham
Barons. Birmingham is the AA affiliate of the Chicago White Sox.
Dan Wright was selected June's Wittnauer Carolina League
Player of the Month in a poll of the managers.
7/30/00-Bubba Carpenter was released by Colorado Springs
so that he could play for the Hyundai Unicorns in Korea.
7/27/00-WEST TENN (SOU) 3B ERIC HINSKE hit a pair of homers
for the second straight night and knocked in four runs as
the Diamond Jaxx defeated Huntsville, 14-5. Hinske clubbed
two-run homers in both the fourth and sixth innings. 1B HEE
CHOI went 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles, a home run and
four RBI for the victors. Hinske belted a game-winning, eighth-inning
blast in Wednesday's 7-6 victory over Jacksonville and is
the fourth minor leaguer this season to hit multiple homers
in back-to-back games this season.
7/26/00-WEST TENN (SOU) 3B ERIC HINSKE's second home run
of the game in the bottom of the eighth inning gave the Cubs
a 7-6 victory over Huntsville. Hinske, who homered twice
on July 13 at Jacksonville, led of the last of the eighth with his
11th blast of the season, snapping a 6-6 tie. Hinske also homered
during a five-run seventh inning.
7/25/00-OMAHA (PCL) 1B KIT PELLOW hit a home run for the
third consecutive game during the Golden Spikes' 13-4 loss
to Nashville. Pellow, who leads the team with 17 homers,
launched a three-run blast in the sixth inning.
7/18/00-CLINTON (MID) 2B MARK BURNETT singled home
the game-winning run in the top of the 10th inning as the
LumberKings rallied past Kane County, 5-4. Burnett snapped
a 4-4 tie with his third hit of the game. 1B SAMONE PETERS
belted a three-run homer, his 15th blast of the season, in
the bottom of the ninth inning to force extra frames for
Clinton.
7/13/00-West Tenn (Southern) third baseman ERIC HINSKE
homered twice and knocked in a career-high six runs and outfielder
COREY PATTERSON went 2-for-4 with five RBIs as the Diamond Jaxx
crushed Jacksonville, 12-3. Hinske, who singled and scored in
the eighth inning, launched a three-run blast during a five-run
third and added another three-run homer in the sixth. Patterson,
who drove home five runs on April 19 at Carolina, belted a three-run
shot in the first inning and smacked a two-run double down the
left-field line in the third.
