The Lady Herself
Who is She?
Arashi Kishuu is a character from the manga X/1999 by the four-woman team CLAMP. She is one of the Seven Seals, the Dragons of Heaven, whose destiny is to protect humanity from the Seven Angels, the Dragons of Earth, who believe that the destruction of humans will save the planet. On the promised day in 1999, these two groups will fight to decide the destiny of the Earth.
Arashi is the Kakushi Miko, Hidden Shrine Maiden, of Ise. The shrine's sacred sword is held inside her body and she can call it forth from the palm of her hand. She can create a kekkai in the shape of a pyramid. While the kekkai holds destruction caused inside it has no effect on the real world. If the creator dies or is seriously wounded then the destruction becomes real. The Seal use kekkai to prevent civilians from being harmed by the massive damage caused when they battle the Angels.
Her Tarot card from volume 14. I think that it suits her very well.
What Does She Do?
Well, mainly she tries to prevent the aforementioned death of all humans. See, she's a nice girl. Other times she hangs around Kamui and the rest of the Seals. We can probably presume that she worked as a miko at Ise during those times when she wasn't busy training for the end of the world. Arashi can also be seen avoiding Sorata's advances with varied success.
Who Does She Like?
Big, big question mark. Arashi's not a very social person. However, she seems to be concerned for Kamui's well-being. And there's Sorata...
Sorata is a Buddhist monk from Mt. Koya and has been prophesied to die protecting the woman he loves. When he sees Arashi he immediately decides she's the one. She doesn't seem too comfortable with that, but lately the ice has been melting...for which I am very glad. Arashi is such a reserved, calm person, she needs someone like Sorata to balance her. He can give her the openness she lacks at the moment, and she can give him self-control.
What is She Like?
Arashi seems very cold, but she had a rough past. Her mother died when she was young and she had to live on her own before she was taken in by the mikos of Ise. She is dedicated to her work ( kicking the ass of everything Dragon of Earthly) and doesn't really know how to relax. Arashi holds her feelings inside her and is difficult to get close to. I see her as a strong, silent big sister to the Seals. She may not speak much about her feelings, but I believe that she would do anything to keep them from harm.
Arashi is focused on the End of the World. Since she was raised at Ise, where her destiny most likely became known to her at an early age, she has a strong sense of duty and understands her responsibility in protecting humanity. This education might also be part of the reason why Arashi does not value her own feelings, which she disregards as unimportant. If she may die soon, then getting attached to people would hurt her in the end. Their deaths would pain her, if she survived, and hers would cause grief to those she befriended.
Lately Arashi has been showing a more human side of herself, especially with Sorata. Something still seems to be troubling her, though.
Why Do I Like Her?
I see her as a more interesting character than the perpetually happy ones with no difficulties to overcome. She isn't easy to understand, but when you get close to her you feel as though you've accomplished something. You can't figure her out at first glance. She's deeper than all those genki schoolgirls so common in anime. Her almost-romance with Sorata is also very touching. Seeing her slowly starting to warm up...
Arashi strikes me as a very unhappy person for some reason. She doesn't really let herself feel, she is so focused on her duty and the End of the World. I want her to find happiness before that, I want her to live before whatever tragic fate CLAMP has in store for her. She is quiet and seems very strong, but I wonder how she feels under the surface. I have a fondness for mysterious characters, and Arashi is just that.
And on a less intellectual level, that sword of hers is way cool. *grin*. I respect a woman who can wear a knee-lenght sailor outfit and still kick ass.
What's with the name changes?
Because my main page is called Miko Keiishi's Sanctuary, I renamed this page to make it easier to see what's what. Ise no Miko is the current version.
Disclaimers and Such
X/1999 and Arashi belong to CLAMP. If I owned them Arashi and Sorata would be married already.
A lot of my info came from sakurazukamori.net , most of the pictures included. Another place was Dreams of Sakura. Both are excellent sites, I recommend them if you have any interest in X.
The pictures are prettier in full size, they're small here because I wanted to save loading time.
My Arashi chibi. Isn't she adorable? I only wish there was a Sorata for
her... Go adopt your own!
My Arashi Gallery (or the beginnings of it, anyway)
It's rather hard to find Arashi pictures, especially in color. Most of the X art, as well as the story, concentrates on Kamui, and it isn't the easiest thing to hunt down pics of our Miko. I'm one of those unlucky people who don't have a scanner. *sobs and looks depressed* If I got my hands on one I'd scan in my manga.
There are not many Arashi images that are commonly found on the net. The rest tend to be rare scans, for which I usually prefer to give the link to their original location and advice visitors to go see them there. So...this place is rather empty. If anyone wants to give me permission to use his/her images in this gallery I'd be very, very grateful.
As it is, most of the pictures are scattered through the text.
Arashi and Nataku of the Dragons of Earth. Beautiful use of colors, purple
suits her.
I love the use of shadows here. Look hard and you'll notice she's not that
far from a smile. For Arashi, at least. *grin*
If Sorata saw her like this he'd probably die of happiness.
The Webmistress Speaks
I'm not satisfied with this shrine. I started the Satsuki shrine after this and for some reason it's coming along better. *hides*
