Hendrich1 van Schoonhoven b abt. 1600 in Wittsburg, Holland M.Aeltgen Adiens
From a message by Roger Schoonover:
I have heard many differing ideas about the Schoonover origin. But there are some more clear facts: the first of the Schoonover line came here before 1650 and were called Van Schoonhoven. They came from Holland, although it would appear that these Euro Schoonhovens had contacts all over the place. In Holland, the 'Van' designated 'from' which would mean that these people were 'from' Schoonhoven, the small city on the river Lek (really a Roman canal). But it does make some sense since ports on the north sea are few and far between. I've heard that in the old language, many hundreds of years ago, the name 'Schoon' was pronounced differently and meant either clean or safe, maybe as a clean escape. Hoven then sounded more like "hav'n", meaning haven, or save place. The location on the ancient Roman canal made it a 'safe haven'.
From a book by Ollie Collett Lunsford:
Mrs. Ollie Lunsford of Elkins, West Virgina,
recieved by request, the following data from Her Majesty, Queen Wilhelmina of
Holland, on August 4,1942.
The Municipality of Schoonhoven has an area of 208 acres. Its
population was, in 1930,4,477 and in 1936, 4,502. It is situated on the bank of
Lek, and was in earlier times an important fortress. The origin of the name is
explained in two ways; Cornelius Aurelius called it "Bello-Portus"
(beautiful harbor) and claimed that its real name was "Schoonhaven"
(schoon is beautiful and haven is harbor.) Others derive the name from
"Schoon hoven"' meaning beautiful farms, after the many rich farms
and estates which suround the town. The emblem of Schoonhoven is four climbing
lions on a silver field, of which the first and last are black and the two
middle ones are red.
Generation No. 2
1. Claes/Klaas Hendrickse Van Schoonhoven (Hendrich Van Schoonhoven) was born 1629 in Wilsburgh/Utrecht, Holland, and died before March 16, 1661 in Ft. Orange/Albany, New York. From research of Patty B. Myers: "Klass1 Van Schoonover, came to America 1640-48. There is a record of him being in Fort Orange (Albany) prior to 1654. He d. 15 Mar 1661; bur. in the church yard of the Dutch Reformed Church in Kingston, N.Y.; m 1654 Cornelia ("Neeltie") Fredrickse. Klaas van Schoonover was a carpenter and also dealt in real estate. In 1657 he held a patent for a lot in Beverwyck (original name of Fort Orange). He had a number of real estate transactions recorded in Ulster County, New York prior to his death. A deed of 1657 records the ground on which the Askokan Reservoir now stands near Kingston as the property of Klaas Hendrick Van Schoonhoven, Dutch immigrant from Wiltaberg (Utrecht, Holland). Cornelia m/2 Willem Janse Stoll who was killed by the Indians at Kingston. She m/3 1664 Albert Gooversen and perhaps moved to New York (Amsterdam). "
Children of Claes Van Schoonhoven and Neeltie Fredrickse are:
3. i. Margrietzie Clas Van Schoonover.
4. ii. Hendrick Claessen Van Schoonhoven, born Abt May 05, 1652 in Fort Orange, Orange, New York; died aft. December 04, 1715 in Kingston, Ulster County, New York.
(It is not known with certainty whether Claus and Geurt were really brothers)
2. Geurt
Hendrickse Van Schoonhoven (Hendrich van Schoonhoven).Geurt Hendricks Van Schoonhoven,
born 1634 in Holland, came to America and settled in Beverwyck perhaps as late
as the 1650s. Beverwyck was the name given to the community of fur
traders that first emerged along the Hudson River north of Fort Orange during
the 1640s. Geurt supported himself through carpentry. He rented a
dwelling while working out of a "celler with a lean-to shed" - which
he purchased in 1663. Later, he owned a house and lot within the Albany
stockade. In 1675 Geurt was farming in Half Moon and in 1681 on Cohoes
Island. By the 1860's he had married Maritie Cornelis. They were members
of the Albany Dutch Church. Maritie was born in Europe, came to America and all
of her children were born here prior to 1683. She lived with Geurt in
Albany and in his other up-river residences. Their six children also became
members of the Albany Dutch Church. Maritie Cornelis Van Schoonhoven
witnessed the baptism of a granddaughter in 1704. Maritie may have died
as late as 1710.
In August 1700, Geurt Hendrickse made a will calling himself a yeoman of
Halfmoon. As was the custom, he acknowledged the suppremacy of God and his own
allegience to the king of England. He left his "well beloved wife Maritie
Cornelius" his entire Halfmoon estate and also his lot in Albany. She was
made executrix. The eldest son Jacob was given one pound and ten shillings as
his birthright and son Hendrick was left Geurt's carpenter tools. The sons were
to share farm tools. After their mother's death, the sons were to have
the Halfmoon and Albany property appraised, and, after six years, divide the
proceeds six ways to include their sisters, Margarita, Hendrickie, Geertruy,
and Jacomyntie Van Schoonhoven. Geurt Hendrickse Van Schoonhoven, the New
Netherland patriarch died 12 Jan 1702.

She married Mattys Jr. Blanchan/Blanjin March 30, 1679 in Kingston, son of Mattys Blanchan/Blanjin and Magdalene Jorisse. From research of Patty B. 4. Hendrick Claessen Van Schoonhoven (Claes Hendrickse, Hendrich Van Schoonhoven) was bp. May 5, 1652 at the Dutch Reformed Church in Fort Orange, Orange, New York, and died aft. December 4, 1715 in Kingston, Ulster County, New York. Carpenter. He and Cornelia are buried in the Dutch Reformed Church, Kingston, the same place his parents are buried. He married July 6, 1679 (1) Debora Christoffels Davids bp. Jan 25,1665 Kingston, NY, d Dec 4, 1715 Kingston, NY daughter of Christoffel "Kit" Davids, born in 1615 or 1616 in England, woodsman, Indian interpreter and whiskey trader and Maria Martens/Maria Martensen, b.abt 1633 in Ulster, New York. Divorce Filing Oct 17,1687 in Kingston, Ulster County, NY Hendrick married January 1, 1688 (2) Cornelia Swartwout b. March 13,1667 d.July 7, 1714 in Kingston Church, New York, daughter of (Sheriff) Roeloff Swartwout and Eva Bradt. In 1715, Hendrick registered banns: "HENDRIK KLAASZ SCHOONHOOVEN, widower of CORNELIA SWARTWOUD, and WILLEMJEN DE LANGE, widow of THEUNIS KOOL, born in Kingstown. Banns registered, 4 Dec. 'Withdrawn the same day.'"
Debora was a little over 14 when she married Hendrick who was 27. Despite 8 years of marriage, they produced no children. When she was twenty she had an affair with Peg Leg Perrick or Dirck Adrians Van Vliet.*
*Here follows a note by Don Green on research done by Tony Schoonover:
Circumstantial evidence points to Dirck Van Vliet as the elusive Dirrick "Wootin Legg." Our reasons for this conclusion are as follows. (1) His first name was Dirrick (Dirck is another form of the given name). (2) Dirck Van Vliet had one leg. A brother-in-law, Gysbert Krom accidentally shot off Dirck's left leg at a New Year's Eve Party in 1678. A wooden or "peg" leg was the usual artificial limb for the time. (3) We believe that "wooden leg" is not a proper Dutch surname. As we understand it, Dutch surnames at this time were usually derived from the father's given name (the English influence changed that custom to a single surname running from parent to child, etc.) Wooden leg, therefore, was a kind of nickname, possibly a cruel pejorative nickname. (4) In her affadavit, cited above, Debora states that Dirck would not marry her, but instead, he married another. This would have occurred either before or soon after birth of the child. In 1685, the year in which Niclaas was born, Dirck Van Vliet married Anne Andriesen (baptised 1662), daughter of Andries and Hilletje Hendricks Barentsen. (5) The families of both Dirck and Debora lived in the village of Kingston, and obviously knew one another. The Van Vliet family arrived in New Netherlands on the ship, "Trouw," on 13 June, 1662, and settled at Kingston. Dirck died there in 1702. Over the years the Van Vliet, Schoonover, Krom and Davids (Davis) families intermarried. Later, Debora's grand-daughter, Rebekka, married a Krom who was the grand-son of Dirck Van Vliet. Book AA, page 66 in the office of the County Clerk of Ulster County, New York, records a complaint of Hendick Claes Schoonover against Debora Christoffels David before the Justice of the Peace 17 Oct 1687. Debora admitted that Hendirck was not the father of her first child and that the father was Derrick Wootin Legg.
"A

Hendrick made a will soon after he married Cornelia and before any of his legitmate children were born. He gave Debora's son "an English Schillling." From research of Patty B. Myers:

Later he was captain of the militia company drawn from Niskayuna and Halfmoon. A captain needed to be a man of means as he was responsible for raising and outfitting his company. Then his expenses could be reimbursed.

[The Old Mine Road was probably the first wheeled-vehicle road in this country, built three hundred years and perhaps more ago by the pioneer Dutch settlers for access to the mines of the Minisink country. It extended from Esopus (now Kingston), New York, and Sussex and Warren Counties in New Jersey, to the Delaware Water Gap. (C. G. Hine, The Old Mine Road, Rutgers University Press, New Brunswick, N.J., 1909.)] They made their homes in the Minisink area of the upper Delaware River Valley, Sussex Co., NJ. In 1747 they were attached to the Moravian Church of the Upper Delaware Valley, Walpack. (Tedford E. Schoonover, Our Family History, Schoonover, Kar, Robinson, Hayes, p. 5.)"

Land Bounty Rights."Although
he had practiced the carpenter's trade and was an aspiring landholder, by the
1750s, Dirck had established himself as skipper of the sloop "Rising
Sun" carrying cargoes between Albany and New York City. Over the next
decades he was a well-known Hudson River slooper - hauling country produce
downriver and returning with valuable cargoes on behalf of Albany merchants
,,,. Like his father, Dirck B. Van Schoonhoven was prominent in the Albany
County militia. In 1755, he was commissioned an ensign in the Rensselaerswyck
company. He served the city government as well - being appointed firemaster for
the Third Ward in 1750 - first documenting a long-term connection to the Albany
government that culminated in his election as assistant alderman in 1766. In
1766, he joined a number of Albany people in opposition to the Stamp Act by
signing a "constitution" of the Albany Sons of Liberty. Ten years
later, he was running errands for the Albany Committee of Safety and was sent
with a crew to serve as a carpenter at Ticonderoga. While not distinguished in
any particular way, Dirck Bradt Van Schoonhoven was a well-known Albany
personage during the 1770s and could be counted on to lend his support on
behalf of friends and neighbors. After the war, he received a land bounty right
for service to the American cause. Abandoning the river trade, he seems to have
retired to his Watervliet home. His only recorded public act of the post-war
period was to sign an Antifederal petition in 1788. He died in August 1795 at
the age of seventy five and was buried from the Albany Dutch Church where he
was a lifelong member."

this line. But, there is some confusion that still remains. For example, in A history of Randolph County, West Virginia by A.S. Bosworth, 1916 there is this on page 381: The
Schoonover Family. This pioneer family is of German ancestry, Benjamin
Schoonover was born in Connecticut in 1755 and settled at the mouth of Horse
Shoe Run in Randolph, now Tucker County. A few years later he moved to Shavers

of Johannes Dekker/Decker.
New
research by Don Green:
·
Back in the 1970s, it was Joseph Bachman who put me onto the
trail of Christopher Krom Schoonover, my 3d gr-grandfather. At the time, Joe
suggested that the maiden name of Jane might be "Chandler" because
she had given that as the middle name to one of her sons. but I have gone back
to the Minisink region's baptismal records and using the processs of elimination,
I now believe that our "Jane" is a DEKKER/DECKER rather than a
CHANDLER. More specifically, I believe that she is Janache, daughter of
Johannes Dekker/Decker, Jr. To confuse matters more, Johannes had two
"Janes," one by his first wife and one by his second wife. Our
Janache's mother is Maragietje Gomar; the second Jane is Jenneke, daughter of
Sarah Hornbeck. Janache was born in 1764; Jenneke was born in 1772.
Here is my reasoning and evidence. We know that our Jane was born in 1764 from
evidence in Christopher's Pension Record. From the ages of the two older sons,
we know that the marriage would have taken place in abt 1783-84, soon after
Christopher was discharged from the Continental Army at Newburgh,NY. He
returned home right after his release and spent some time with his family. The
odds are that he married someone he already knew in the small communities of
Machackemeck,NY or Walpack,NJ, only a few miles apart (that is what they did in
those days given their limited "social geography"). By the process of
elimination in the baptismal records (Minisink Valley Reformed Dutch Church
Records, 1716-1830 by Vosburgh, editor), I have found only one Jane, among the
several Dutch variations, born in the period, 1763-66, whose age matches that
of our Jane, and that is JANACHE DEKKER/DECKER. And she is the only Jane in
that period for whom I can find no record of marriage and/or descendants.
Janache disappears from the records after her birth. Some genealogists have
concluded that she died as a child, but I find no evidence of that. She and
Christopher would have been married in abt 1783 or 1784 after he was discharged
from the army in 1783. I have been unable to find a record of Christopher's and
Jane's marriage, but there is a gap in the Machackemeck marriage records from
1777 to 1785 because of the burning of the church by the British and the lack
of a clergyman during that period. Finally, it should be noted that Jane gave
the name "Decker" to her third son, Isaac Decker Schoonover. The
middle initial "D" is found with second son, Solomon D. Schoonover,
and my best bet is that the "D" also stands for "Decker."
As for Chandler Schoonover, there are no Jane Chandlers in the baptismal
records of either the Minisink or Kingston areas. I believe that Chandler was
named after a neighbor, Josiah Chandler, who was located 10 households from
Christopher's farm in the Census of 1810 in Warren County, PA. The name may
have been given in gratitude for some act of kindness.

He started in business as a storekeeper on Hector Hill (North Barton), near where the Methodist Episcopal church now stands. He ran the business successfully until the Southern Rebellion broke out, when he sold out and bought a farm one half mile west of the village of Smithboro (now owned by Fred Manning) and turned his attention to farming. He was not successful with grain raisint it was too hard work for him. He put up a store and ran that business during the Rebellion very profitably. He then sold the farm and moved to Tioga Center and commenced storekeeping in his father's store. ...Ed held the office of Justice of the Peace for many years to the satisfaction of the whole community. He also studied to be a physician and did some home practice which gave him the name "Doctor Ed." He was getting along nicely when he had a stroke which ended in his death. When Ed passed away, Tioga Center lost one of its most enterprising men and a good citizen. Early records of the Town of Tioga reveal that Ed was also Superintendant of Town of Tioga Common Schools from 1842 to 1857. (2) Anna Margaret Garriss b June 10, 1795 PA d December 14, 1874.
Research notes by Bob Schoonover (RBobJim@aol.com) Nicholas appears to have had
a second wife -- Anna Margaret Gariss. No direct proof of this marriage
has been found but the following facts support this theory: 1. The will
of Leonard Gariss notes that his daughter Anna Margaret Gariss
was born 10 Jun 1795 and was married to Nicholas Schoonover. (source: Leonard
Gariss will written 29 Jul 1830.) 2. Nicholas Schoonovers brother Ezekiel
Schoonover married Barbara Gariss, the sister of Anna Margaret Gariss.
Ezekiel Schoonover and her brother Philip Gariss were named as executors of
Leonard Gariss will. (source: Leonhart Gariss descendants at: http://www.uftree.com/UFT/WebPages/scemer01/ANCESTRY/d0/i0000078.htm)
4. The 1850 Illinois census shows Nicholas (born in 1775) living with his
unmarried son Philip (born in 1819) and Margaret age 55 (and therefore born in
1795.) Three years later, in 1853, Philip married Hannah SPINNER.
(source: 1850 census for Cass Co. and Mason Co., Illinois.) 5. The 1860
Illinois census shows Nicholas and Margaret living with his married son Lewis
(born in 1821) and his wife Catherine. (source: 1860 census, Cass Co.,
IL)6. Nicholas first wife Susannah does not appear in any Illinois
census.7. Nicholas son George Garess Schoonover was born in 1817. The
middle name Garess could be a spelling variation of his mother Anna Margarets
maiden name Gariss/Garris.

From: Biographical and Historical Memoirs of Northeast Arkansa, Compiled By Mrs. Leister Presley Searcy, Arkansas:Jacob Schoonover, retired farmer, Pocahontas, Ark. The subject of this sketch is one of the honored pioneers of Randolph County. He has been located here for a period of over twenty-nine years, and has not only become well known, but the respect and esteem shown him are as wide as his acquaintance. His fine farm of 200 acres is adorned with an attractive and commodious house, and the large mill and cotton-gin which he operates deserve special attention. He is a native of Honesdale. Penn., and is a son of Daniel and Eliza (Jacks) Schoonover, both of whom are also natives of the Keystone State. Jacob Schoonover went to California when twenty-one years of age, or in 1852, by way of the Isthmus, and remained there until September, 1856, engaged in mining and teaming. He then returned to his native State, remained there about a year, and then in 1857 went to Minnesota, where he spent another year. In 1858 he came to Arkansas, settled in Marion County, and engaged in photographing, which he continued for three years, traveling in the meantime over Northeast Arkansas and Southeast Missouri. He happened to be in Randolph County when the war broke out, and in 1862 he enlisted in Shaver's regiment, Tappin's brigade, and served until June, 1865, in the Confederate army. He was regimental quartermaster. After the close of the [p.427] conflict he returned to Randolph County, remained a few months, and then proceeded to the State of his nativity, where he sojourned six months, visiting his parents. Subsequently he returned to this county, and engaged as salesman in the store of Green R. Jones, remaining thus employed for two years. He then bought a partnership, and this continued until 1873. Three years later he was elected circuit clerk of Randolph County, and filled this position in a very acceptable manner for six years. After this he was engaged in farming and trading. He was first married in 1870 to Miss Martha J. Wear, a native of Pennsylvania, who bore him the following named children: Eugene G., now in Pennsylvania; Herbert, Addie C. and Parke T. The mother of these children died on the 22d of December, 1878, and Mr. Schoonover was married the second time, on the 5th of January, 1882, to Miss Ella Bolen, a native of the Blue Grass State. Two children are the fruit of this union: Robert and Jacob. Mr. Schoonover is a Royal Arch Mason, and a member of the K. of H. He has ever taken an active part in politics and public affairs, and has done much to build up every enterprise for the common good.

Orange Pemberton Warner, had
previously removed westward and was employed for some years as a mail clerk on
the Chicago & Northwestern railway. He served as a soldier of the Civil war.
Eventually he settled in Grant County, Nebraska, where he successfully engaged
in the practice of law and was also prominent in county affairs. Around October
1890, he moved from Whitman to his ranch in Hyannis, Nebraska and continued
offering services as Grant County Attorney. Hyannis is about 1 1/2 miles west
of Whitman.
Resource: Copied from the Hunt Co History Book, "Grant County--Its Friends
and Neighbors". O. P. Warner was the first Postmaster of the newly
established US Postoffice in Whitman, Grant Co., Nebraska on September 5,
1887.Directory-County Officers- lists O. P. Warner, Attorney Newspaper item
extract: O. P. Warner, PCC, owing to his increasing and extensive law practice
and the irregularity of the suburban trains concluded to move his residence and
office uptown on Poplar Street. The counselor will immediately commence the
erection of a handsome 8x10 addition to his office in the latest design of
architecture, Queen Anne style. Another Newspaper extract: Mr. O. P. Warner was
in town Wednesday. Mr W. gives it out that he is half owner in a printing
press. Mr W. conceives that the power of the press is irrepressible, and that
with himself at the business end of it, it would be irresistible. Yet another
article referred to Old Peanuts Warner came up to "make a little
medicine" over the convention. At the residence of Mr & Mrs Gus
Buchfinck, on Sunday July 31,1892 at 12, the Rev. Olmstead officiating, O P
Warner and Isabella M. Whiton, both of this county, were married..........Mr
& Mrs Warner went immediately to housekeeping and are now at home to their
friends on their ranch, one mile and a half west of Whitman. Notice placed in
newspaper by O P Warner: I hereby give notice, that my wife, Isabella M.
Warner, did on the 11th day of Nov., 1892, leave my bed and board, without just
cause or provocation, and that I will not be responsible for any debts or
contracts she may make after said date.
"Grandma Belkaap's brother. Nickname "Peanut". He was a lawyer.
He had an opium habit. He was taken prisoner in the Civil War and laid out in
the swamps. he was later found by the Union men who put him in a Vetran's
Hospital. He had the "shakes" from being so cold, so they gave him
opium and he got the habit from that." (by Floyd Bryan Davis)
