This Website at first was designed for the course of Bibliographic
Description Theory and Practice at the University of Western Ontario where the author
finished his M.L.I.S program. But the author wants to keep maintaining
this site as a Metadata learning gateway for public who are interested in Digital Information
Organization and Metadata Development.
The site could act as an informal training resource for people using Metadata
to organize and catalogue different types of digital information.
It tries to cover most important information related to Metadata. It's
assumed that readers have some knowledge in library and information
science, and know about some specific terms and rules.
The author hopes this Website could help readers disclose the key points and issues in the development of
metadata standards and supporting technologies. It provides some links to online articles, where Experts' give critical evaluation of metadata
schemes for various types of electronic resources, and performance measures for those metadata.
Some topics here include basic metadata conceptions, major metadata standards or schemas,
issues related to managing different formats and contents of digital resources, the relationship between new access mechanisms for digital
library and traditional cataloguing methods, intellectual rights control, as well as linkages
among various information management systems. It also introduces software and tools to support metadata creation, harvesting
and migration.
Because of the limitations of Web page,
and the understanding of author himself, the content within
this site could not provide deep knowledge in this new
area. Instead most of concepts and introductions are brief
and may have some error inside. Please feel free to contact
me, and help improve the content of this site and
keep it up-to-date.
