| THE PRESIDENT'S GREETINGS
The publication of the Newsletter is the result of a feeling that the 400-plus members of the Malta Historical Society are left very much at a distance by the organising committee of the Society. Their only real contact is that they receive the annual Melita Historica, whose consistently high standard of scholarship has served as an example and an encouragement for the practice of a high level of historical studies in Malta and among the Maltese and the fostering of a serious interest in the history of these islands among the general public throughout the well-nigh fifty years of its existence. A cursory look at the contents reveals much achievement by members of the Society and other contributors of the Society Journal. A small number also purchase the Proceedings of History Week, which also contain much in valuable research work. Otherwise, the History Week and the other occasional lectures draw audiences of a mere fifty to one hundred persons of the Society or the public. It is hoped that the present Newsletter, intended hopefully to be issued more than once a year, should bring about a welcome change, binding all members of the Society together and strengthening and directing their resolve to further the noble aims of the society now soon to enter the second fifty years of its existence. Professor Godfrey Wettinger President

The Editorial Welcome to the first issue of the Newsletter of the Malta Historical Society. Although we have opted for the rather unassuming title of Newsletter, we hope that this new initiative will develop into something more than just a means for the Committee to report on its current activities. Our wish it that this Newsletter becomes a useful tool in the hands of each and every member of the Society. Looking at the Newsletter as another benefit of membership, each member is free to use it according to his or her needs and to further the aims of the Society. We welcome for publication in this Newsletter short articles and letters of general interest to our members, including your comments and suggestions both on improving this Newsletter and on other activities of our Society. In its desire to allow this Newsletter to be of benefit to the highest number of members possible, the Committee has decided to publish this Newsletter in English. However, in keeping with the spirit of our Statute, the Committee has decided that he editorial be written Maltese and accompanied with an English translation. Contributions by members to future issues of this Newsletter will be welcome in either language. This Newsletter will also provide all our members with a free classified advert service, called Members' Notice Board, in which a member may place short messages, such as, a message requesting information on his current research interests from other members, or a message seeking to buy out-of-print books etc. In this first issue of the Newsletter the Committee is also launching another benefit to all its members. All members can now benefit from special discounts at the shops listed in the box at the bottom of this page. The Committee would like to thank these establishments for accepting to extend this benefit to our members. We would like to conclude this first editorial with our heartfelt season's greetings to all our members and their families. The Editor |
