In blue letters the sentence: “A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away…”
2. EXT. SPACE
The Star Wars logo busts onto a star field and begins to pull back. Once it disappears the opening scroll begins.

(Yellow words inclined back into infinity.)
Episode III:
The Betrayal of Obi-Wan Kenobi
The chaos of the Clone Wars continues. Fighting bitterly for their leader, Count Dooku, the Separatists have weakened the Republic’s resources and resolve.
More disturbing still, the Jedi’s ranks have dwindled to an alarming low. The Jedi Council privately fears their mandate as guardians of peace is no longer achievable.
The conflict has not been without losses for the Separatist. The ARMY OF THE REPUBLIC has destroyed five of six main battle droid manufacturing plants. Admiral Organa of Alderaan now senses victory at planet known only as M2799A…
Pan down to a huge fleet of prototype Star Destroyers. The largest Star Destroyer analog, called Republic Knight, becomes the focus of the camera
3. INT. REPUBLIC KNIGHT – DOCKING BAY
Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi fight one another in a lightsaber duel. Obi-Wan has cut his hair and beard into a more disciplined almost military style, while Anakin has allowed his hair to grow out a little and has lost his Padawan braid. They both wear military uniforms of different branches of service. Anakin fights ferociously as Obi-Wan barely counters every move looking for an opening. For a moment the camera focuses on Anakin’s right hand, which is again flesh covered. Anakin makes a mistake and slips, Obi-Wan nearly takes advantage, but Anakin recovers and, only a few swings later, swings his lightsaber through Obi-Wan’s neck.
Obi-Wan, neck intact, nods to Anakin.
In the background, visible for the first time, several soldiers applaud. Mace Windu is among them. He appears solemn in a brief close-up and quietly leaves. As both extinguish their mock lightsabers Obi-Wan gives Anakin a pat on the back. Obi-Wan leads Anakin away from the spectators.
OBI-WAN KENOBI
How’d it feel?
ANAKIN SKYWALKER
(Flexing his right hand.)
Warm. Somewhat confusing.
OBI-WAN
But it’s working.
Behind the two, Dr. Paugh, an elderly furry alien with too much energy, approaches.
ANAKIN
Almost. Some numbness-
Dr. PAUGH
Is caused by the by your still regrowing nerves. The arm is working perfectly.
OBI-WAN
(Nods to Dr. Paugh.)
Dr. Paugh.
ANAKIN
It still feels a bit clumsy.
Dr. PAUGH
(Grabbing Anakin from behind by the shoulders.)
Of course it does my boy. You’ve regained fine motor control and dexterity over your whole arm. Your brain needs time to relearn.
ANAKIN
(Glumly.)
I know.
DR. PAUGH
(Slaps Anakin on the back)
Have faith. You’re already at ninety percent of that metallic monstrosity and should switch to it permanently within weeks.
(Begins to walk away backwards.)
And the two of us are sure to earn the Republic Science Academy’s Kaiburr Award for Medicine for this.
As Dr. Paugh gets out of earshot, Obi-Wan begins walking with Anakin again towards the hangar’s door.
Obi-Wan very subtly favors his left leg.
OBI-WAN
Let’s hurry. The briefing will begin soon.
(After they take a few steps.)
An award-winning healer now? That’s an unexpected path.
ANAKIN
An award-winning engineer.
(Shrugs.)
I just wanted my hand back. Probably even broke the Jedi Code somewhere.
OBI-WAN
Oh?
ANAKIN
(Caught thinking of touching Padmé with a cold metallic hand tells a half-truth.)
It makes people uncomfortable. It’s not the best feeling.
The camera falls behind as the two walk through the hangar door.
4. INT. REPUBLIC KNIGHT - HALLWAY
Anakin and Obi-Wan continue walking in the lightly crowded hallway.
OBI-WAN
You couldn’t ignore them?
ANAKIN
If there wasn’t another choice.
OBI-WAN
There was no other choice until you invented one.
ANAKIN
I suppose I shouldn’t have contacted the doc then?
OBI-WAN
(Shrugs.)
It’ll help people. You’ll be a hero to the clones at least. It could be said that the Force pushed you along this path for that purpose.
ANAKIN
It’ll be said in my letter of acceptance to the R.S.A. at least. So you don’t disagree?
OBIWAN
(Smiles.)
Accepting your condition never occurred to you Anakin. You weren’t crippled, only inconvenienced. That’s a flaw you should be aware of. Even if it turned into a positive this once.
ANAKIN
(Thinks over Obi-Wan’s words for a second.)
I thought the lectures stopped when I became a Knight.
OBI-WAN
It’s not an easy habit to break.
The door to the briefing room opens with startlingly speed like the Death Star doors in A New Hope. Obi-Wan stands in the doorframe.
OBI-WAN
You’ll find out when you get a Padawan of your own.
ANAKIN
(While passing Obi-Wan into the briefing room.)
You’re such an arrogant bastard.
OBI-WAN
(Grins.)
Coming from you that means a lot.
Obi-Wan follows Anakin into the briefing room.
5. INT. REPUBLIC KNIGHT – BRIEFING ROOM
The briefing room is a small mostly white semi-auditorium filled with officers and a few Jedi, including Ki-Adi-Mundi. Bail Organa wears an olive admiral’s uniform and is speaking to General Armande, who is in the same dress as Obi-Wan, presumably about some detail of the presentation he’s about to give. As Obi-Wan and Anakin find places to sit, one more knot of officers comes through the door. Bail Organa takes this as a sign that they’re ready to begin.
BAIL ORGANA
The Senate has given final approval to proceed with the attack on M2799A.
The lights dim as holograms of a dark colored planet filled with large patches of black sand and surrounded by an asteroid field come into view. The hologram zooms in on a detailed picture of the droid manufacturing plant. The plant is a massive building whose design makes it appear that the facility extends beneath the ground. The hologram slowly spins around.
BAIL ORGANA
Our primary objective will be the droid manufacturing plant seen here. The might of the Separatist war machine rests in their unending supply of battle droids. Taking this facility will effectively end that supply. General Armande.
The hologram returns to its original state with the exception that the asteroid field is now highlighted.
GENERAL ARMADE
The asteroid field here makes a planetary bombardment from beyond sensor range impossible.
The hologram changes as the Republic fleet appears.
GENERAL ARMADE
The Separatists will have time to bring up their defensive shield making a ground assault necessary.
A light yellow shield appears over the planet. The Republic fleet is highlighted moving towards it with the smaller Separatist fleet in between the two.
BAIL ORGANA
Fortunately Intelligence indicates that their fleet has been weakened greatly and is no match for our own.
The two fleets meet and the Republic forces seem to win.
BAIL ORGANA
Establishing a landing corridor around the target zone shouldn’t present any great difficulty.
Landing craft and fighters head towards the planet.
BAIL ORGANA
However, their ground forces remain formidable and will be difficult to penetrate. The bulk of the remaining clone troopers must be deployed to secure the facility. We’ll only get one chance at this. If we’re repelled it’s unlikely enough ground forces will remain for a second offensive. Let no doubt remain. This will be the decisive battle.
A crude fast-forward rendition of the battle plays out for the rest of the scene. Bail Organa’s face is slightly red from the hologram playing near him.
OBI-WAN
Question, Admiral.
BAIL ORGANA
Yes, General Kenobi.
OBI-WAN
If we can easily control the surrounding space why not just form a blockade around the planet.
BAIL ORGANA
Two reasons. One, as long as that factory is online they’ll keep resisting. With full anti-ship batteries and the construction of droid fighters they will eventually be able to run the blockade and win the war. Two, we’ve just learned that Count Dooku himself is on the planet.
A slight murmur runs through the crowd.
BAIL ORGANA
Capturing him is our secondary objective. If we capture both him and this world Separatist resistance will collapse. The Jedi Order…
(Indicates Ki-Adi-Mundi who nods.)
…has volunteered a special assault squad for the purpose of detaining the Count. Full details of the assault are being downloaded to you now. Be careful. They’re desperate and unpredictable. May the Force be with you.
Several officers leave the briefing room and pass the camera. Obi-Wan and Anakin walk out and head away from the camera.
6. INT. REPUBLIC KNIGHT – HALLWAY
Anakin studies the datapad for his orders.
ANAKIN
(Looks tired.)
Nursemaiding transports to the surface under full artillery. My pilots will love this assignment.
OBI-WAN
I’d be happy to switch places. Sitting in a transport waiting for random death isn’t quite as fun as it sounds.
ANAKIN
I suppose.
OBI-WAN
You look tired. I didn’t want to say anything before but I haven’t seen you fight so undisciplined since Dooku took us apart. Are you okay?
ANAKIN
Fatigue’s throwing my focus off. This campaign’s lasted longer than what I signed up for.
OBI-WAN
(Slightly concerned.)
I’m sure you’re not alone. Will you be all right out there? Several soldiers and Jedi are entrusting their lives to you. And it’s still not too late for you to become a casualty.
ANAKIN
I’ll be fine when we’re out there again.
(Smiles.)
I still beat you didn’t I?
OBI-WAN
As long as you feel up to it.
ANAKIN
Of course.
(Arches eyebrow.)
Unless you’d feel safer with someone else?
OBI-WAN
(Sighs.)
There’s no one in the galaxy I’d rather trust my life to.
ANAKIN
Good. Once I brief my pilots I’ll go meditate in my quarters. I won’t let you down. See you before launch.
Obi-Wan watches Anakin walk away with a look of concern on his face.
7. INT. REPUBLIC KNIGHT – ANAKIN’S QUARTERS
The room is modestly sized as fitting a Colonel in the Republic Army. Artoo-Detoo whistles from a corner.
ANAKIN
Hello Artoo.
(Sighs.)
Please play the message.
Artoo whistles at Anakin.
ANAKIN
I know what I said. Just play it please.
Artoo whistles disapprovingly but leans back so that he can begin the message. Anakin kneels in front of Artoo-Detoo as a small hologram of Padmé resolves in front of him. She’s wearing a skimpy outfit and does a short and cute seductive dance for Anakin. The camera focuses on Anakin and then back to the hologram as she finishes. It dissolves into Padmé wearing more conservative clothes for the greater part of the message.
PADMÉ
(Smiles.)
Ani. I asked Artoo to play this message one month after you rejoin Master Kenobi. I wanted this to be a surprise, so don’t get too angry at him for holding out. I don’t think I’ve told you enough how proud I am when word reaches me of your achievements. They scare me to death, but you can’t know how difficult it was to hide my real feelings when stories of my dashing knight saving all those innocent people on Almania started spreading. You must feel so lonely out there alone and having only Artoo know why. I know I’ll never be too far from your thoughts. Sometimes I almost think I can feel you reaching out for me. I love you Anakin. Stay safe and come back to me soon.
Padmé fades into nothing. Anakin continues to stare at the spot where she disappeared.
ANAKIN
It’s been almost eight months Artoo. We had no idea it would be this long.
Artoo whistles and rolls up to Anakin. Anakin pats Artoo on his dome.
ANAKIN
You better report to the hanger. We’re going out again soon.
Anakin’s door opens for Artoo and closes behind him. Anakin opens an access panel in his arm, presses some buttons, and removes the prosthetic device. A paneling of lights appears where the arm was severed. He attaches the mechanical arm in its place. Anakin awkwardly sits down to meditate. He looks tired. It is obvious that he is having difficulty finding his peace.
WIPE SCENE
8. INT. REPUBLIC KNIGHT – OBI-WAN’S OFFICE
Obi-Wan is at his desk playing with troop movements as if it were a chessboard when Mace Windu walks in. Obi-Wan stands to greet Mace.
OBI-WAN
Master Windu.
MACE WINDU
(Bows to Obi-Wan.)
General.
Obi-Wan waves the honorific away.
MACE WINDU
I saw your demonstration in the hangar.
OBI-WAN
I hope you enjoyed it.
MACE
Very much. Not many Jedi continue to evolve their technique well into their prime.
OBI-WAN
Not many Jedi have found themselves at the mercy of two Sith Lords. Now how can I help you?
MACE
I’m here because of Skywalker.
OBI-WAN
Anakin’s no longer my apprentice. He answers only to the Council.
MACE
I know, but when he followed into service after you became our liaison officer our ability to oversee him diminished. As his superior I’d hoped you could help.
OBI-WAN
What do you want to know?
MACE
He seemed reckless. Should I be concerned?
OBI-WAN
(Gathers his thoughts.)
He claims fatigue from the campaign. Something more is affecting his focus. I’m not quite sure what it is. I also sense impatience in him. Though he tells me he’ll be ready when the fighting starts, and I believe him.
MACE
So today wasn’t normal?
OBI-WAN
No. His maturity and discipline have improved immeasurably since this war began. He may never be fit to sit on the Council, but he’s a respectable Jedi, and the best field commander I have.
MACE
(Nods.)
He’s not the only young Jedi who has recently grown in prominence. As a member of the Council or not, he will lead a generation of Jedi more hardened than any that have come before it.
OBI-WAN
An unforeseen benefit of war.
MACE
Most philosophies speak of renewal out of destruction.
OBI-WAN
Not ours.
MACE
And that may be the hint as to why our powers are eroding. Nothing is timeless.
OBI-WAN
A lesson you learned from Yoda?
MACE
He lives somewhat outside that truth.
OBI-WAN
(Nods and then looks down at his work.)
I need to oversee final preparations.
MACE
Then I’ll leave you to your duties. May the Force be with you.
WIPE SCENE
9. EXT. M2799A – DAY
From an overlook the manufacturing plant and the surrounding perimeter are seen. The sand is black under an ugly pale blue sky. The buildings in the background look of highly military design with the manufacturing plant in the middle of it all. The sun has recently dawned.
10. INT. M2799A – CONFERENCE ROOM
The conference room lacks of any furniture save for the table itself. Bright orange glows highlight the scene.
Count Dooku is meeting with his allies, the leaders of the commerce guilds and some uniformed soldiers representing planets that are truly committed to the Separatists’ cause.
NUTE GUNRAY
(Slams table.)
The status of the war is unacceptable. You assured that the Republic could never take another manufacturing planet after Geonosis. You have lost four more since then. Now you demand our private army be sacrificed for this planet?
DOOKU
We need only deny our enemies a victory Viceroy. Many within the Republic already wish to end the war at all costs.
NUTE GUNRAY
And if they crush us here we’ll be at their mercy. The Republic Courts are no longer open to the manipulations of our advocates.
DOOKU
Patience. If our plans for the Jedi go as they should and we maintain our supply of battle droids the Republic will surely sue for peace. Now if you see any flaw in my plan I am open to suggestions.
JAN DADONNA
Sir.
DOOKU
Go ahead General Dadonna.
JAN DADONNA
If I may, I believe your intentions for the Jedi compromises-
BATTLE DROID
Sir. The Republic Fleet has appeared in grid 010.
DOOKU
Excellent. They are already following our desires. I’m sorry General Dadonna. We will proceed as planned.
11. EXT. SPACE – ABOVE PLANET M2799A
Two fleets approach one another. Fighters swarm out of carriers from both fleets. The Separatist fleet of fighters look very much like TIE fighters, except the front part of their solar panels has been rounded making a D shape and the ball cockpit, lacking a living pilot, is smaller. The fighters meet and begin firing at each other. Seconds later the capital ships are in range of one another and dwarf the firepower of the fighters.
12. INT. REPUBLIC KNIGHT – BRIDGE
Bail Organa is in command. In the background the battle continues. A few Star Destroyer analogs explode.
BAIL ORGANA
Jade group. Reinforce attack group three.
OFFICER
Sir. Resistance within the primary invasion corridor has fallen to acceptable levels.
BAIL ORGANA
Very well. Gold group. Approach invasion corridor and deploy your units. Silver group. Bronze group. Create a perimeter for the primary invasion corridor.
Organa nods to the ship captain who relays the order. Organa then flips com switch.
BAIL ORGANA
General Kenobi. You are clear to launch in two minutes. Good luck.
13. INT. GROUND ASSAULT TRANSPORT SHUTTLE
Obi-Wan is awaiting deployment in the cockpit of his assault shuttle. Outside the window it is clear they are still within the hangar of the Republic Knight. Mace Windu is also in the cockpit.
OBI-WAN
Understood Admiral.
(Flips com switch.)
All transports and escorts prepare to launch on my signal.
(Flips com switch.)
Colonel Skywalker are we ready?
14. INT. ANAKIN’S N-1 STARFIGHTER COCKPIT – HANGAR
Anakin is within an N-1 Starfighter sitting at the point of small fleet of starfighters of various types.
ANAKIN
All fighters prepared for launch.
15. INT. GROUND ASSAULT TRANSPORT SHUTTLE
OBI-WAN
Very good.
(Flips com switch.)
One minute to launch.
16. EXT. SPACE – THE OUTSIDE OF THE REPUBLIC KNIGHT
In the foreground several Republic ships cut the Separatist ships to pieces. In the background the battle is more evenly matched. All at once several transports and fighters appear from each Republic ship of the types seen in the ground battle of Episode II. The Republic Knight’s transports are last and the camera follows them down. Quickly they enter the atmosphere. The bottoms of the ships burn orange.
Several fighters race ahead of the transports.
17. INT. ANAKIN’S N-1 STARFIGHTER COCKPIT – M2779A – THE SKY – DAY
ANAKIN
Approaching anti-aircraft perimeter. All fighters proceed with attack. Artoo prep four proton torpedoes for dual launch.
18. EXT. M2799A – THE SKY – DAY
The camera is placed on the windshield of an N-1 Starfighter trailing the main group of fighters as they approach the defense perimeter. In the center of the perimeter is a massive building that clearly houses the battle droid manufacturing planet. About a third of the fighters are destroyed on approach as the anti-aircraft guns open fire. The remaining fighters stay on target but move erratically. One rolls around three blasts. One of the blasts heads straight towards the camera.
19. INT. N-1 STARFIGHTER COCKPIT – M2779A – THE SKY – DAY
REPUBLIC PILOT
(As his ship disintegrates.)
I’m hit.
20. INT. ANAKIN’S N-1 STARFIGHTER COCKPIT – M2779A – THE SKY – DAY
Anakin briefly glances at the expanding fireball to his left. A piece of debris bounces off his fighter. Anakin instinctively ducks his head away from the sound.
21. EXT. M2799A – THE SKY – APPROACHING THE GROUND – DAY
The remaining fighters nearly crash into the ground but pull up at the last moment in open field. The camera is panning backwards as the fighters race forward kicking up loose sand in their wake. Suddenly several fighters begin firing torpedoes and laser blasts. A moment after that they are above the defense perimeter and flying through smoke, explosions, and return fire. One fighter takes a grazing hit and crashes into a turret. The camera then follows from behind as the fighters complete their run and pull up. Anti-aircraft fire is not as heavy as the fighters pull back to the sky.
22. INT. ANAKIN’S N-1 STARFIGHTER COCKPIT – M2779A – THE SKY – DAY
ANAKIN
(Gazes at readout.)
General. Attack achieved one hundred thirty percent of minimum objectives. You are clear to land.
23. INT. GROUND ASSAULT TRANSPORT SHUTTLE
OBI-WAN
Understood Colonel.
ANAKIN
(Over com.)
Are we clear for a second run?
OBI-WAN
Negative. Droid starfighters are inbound from a surface launch point. ETA is forty-five seconds.
24. INT. ANAKIN’S N-1 STARFIGHTER COCKPIT – M2779A – THE SKY – DAY
ANAKIN
Understood. Fighters. Break by wings and protect your assigned transport.
25. EXT. M2799A – THE SKY – APPROACHING THE GROUND – DAY
Anakin’s fighters meet with the transports as they are lowering themselves to the ground. Some are destroyed by leftover anti-aircraft fire from the ground. The camera registers the droid starfighters approaching from the background. Unlike the TIE variants in the orbital battle, these are the older models seen in Episode I. Republic fighters that are capable fire torpedoes at long range.
26. EXT. M2799A – THE SKY – DAY
The first two rows of droid starfighters start to break off but some run into the approaching torpedoes and explode.
27. EXT. M2799A – APPROACHING THE GROUND – DAY
As the camera pans down to follow the troop transports as they approach the ground a few explosions illuminate the sky in the distance as some Republic fighters meet the oncoming droid fighters. As soon as the troop transports touch the ground clone troopers burst from the transports and begin scattering. The black sand they kick up looks almost like a very light smoke.
28. EXT. M2799A – REPUBLIC LANDING AREA – DAY
Several smaller attack vehicles disengage from the larger transports.
29. EXT. M2779A – REPUBLIC FRONT LINES – DAY
The army begins marching forward already under intense fire coming mainly in the form of missiles. Some lightsabers can be discerned amongst the Republic Army in small patches of green and blue.
30. EXT. M2779A – SEPARATIST PERIMETER – DAY
A wave of battle droids emerge from the Separatist perimeter. Some immediately fly backwards from blaster impacts, but most begin firing at the attacking Republic lines.
31. EXT. M2799A – REPUBLIC LANDING AREA – DAY
Obi-Wan emerges from the transport. Several Jedi are behind him. They run to an open troop transport as seen in Episode II that is being dropped by the larger transport. The miscellaneous Jedi pile aboard the transport. Obi-Wan runs slightly past the opening and turns to Mace Windu.
OBI-WAN
May the Force be with you.
MACE
You as well.
Mace enters the transport and it soon takes off. Near Obi-Wan the command structure is being hastily set up. Obi-Wan looks at the mass of confusion around him and decides to simply leap the two stories to his command post.
32. INT. M2799A – REPUBLIC COMMAND POST – DAY
The room is less confused than what is going on below, but still contains much buzzing. It is at the top of the structure and partially open-air. Many clone troopers sit at tactical stations
Obi-Wan finishes his leap into the structure. He approaches the clone trooper in command.
OBI-WAN
Status.
CLONE TROOPER
The operation is progressing as planned sir.
OBI-WAN
Good. Put me through to Colonel Skywalker.
CLONE TROOPER
Yes sir.
OBI-WAN
Anakin can you hear me.
33. EXT. M2799A – THE SKY – DAY
Anakin’s fighter slashes downward against a droid fighter and fires at it at point-blank range causing it to explode.
34. INT. ANAKIN’S N-1 STARFIGHTER COCKPIT – M2779A – THE SKY – DAY
ANAKIN
Yes General.
35. INT. M2799A – REPUBLIC COMMAND POST – DAY
OBI-WAN
I’m feeding your R2 unit the Jedi strike team’s transponder.
36. INT. ANAKIN’S N-1 STARFIGHTER COCKPIT – CLOSE-UP OF RADAR SCREEN
A blip on Anakin’s RADAR turning from green to blue.
OBI-WAN
(Over com.)
Escort them…
37. INT. ANAKIN’S N-1 STARFIGHTER COCKPIT – M2779A – THE SKY – DAY
OBI-WAN
(Over com. Cont. from previous scene)
…to their landing zone.
ANAKIN
Understood general.
38. EXT. M2799A – THE SKY – DAY
Anakin’s fighter falls behind the Jedi transport.
39. INT. ANAKIN’S N-1 STARFIGHTER COCKPIT – M2779A – THE SKY – DAY
ANAKIN
Jedi team I’ve got your wing.
40. INT. JEDI TRANSPORT – M2779A – DAY
MACE
Good to have you.
41. EXT. M2799A – ABOVE THE SURFACE – DAY
Anakin’s fighter and the Jedi transport race through the battle area. At first they are amongst Republic forces but quickly reach the Separatist front lines and then perimeter. They fly low and take a lot of weak small arms’ fire. A few Jedi swipe away shots aimed within the transport with their lightsabers. Anakin’s fighter sprays out a constant barrage of laser fire and the transport fires several missiles at leftover heavy gun emplacements.
42. INT. ANAKIN’S N-1 STARFIGHTER COCKPIT – M2779A – THE SKY – DAY
ANAKIN
Approaching objective. If you have any missiles left use them on that group of battle droids thirty meters east of your landing zone.
43. EXT. M2799A – ABOVE THE SURFACE – DAY
The transport fires missiles and blows away a large group of battle droids. Their location is near the factory the Separatists are protecting.
44. INT. ANAKIN’S N-1 STARFIGHTER COCKPIT – M2779A – THE SKY – DAY
ANAKIN
Will your transport need an escort back out?
45. INT. JEDI TRANSPORT – M2779A – DAY
MACE
No. All onboard are a part of the strike team.
46. INT. ANAKIN’S N-1 STARFIGHTER COCKPIT – M2779A – THE SKY – DAY
ANAKIN
Good luck then.
47. EXT. M2799A – DROID FACTORY ENTRENCE – DAY
Anakin’s fighter pulls upward as the Jedi land. Clone troopers and Jedi pour out. The Jedi have their lightsabers extended and are protecting the few who are slicing a new entrance into the door of the factory. They quickly cut through and disappear into the factory.
48. EXT. M2799A – SKYSHOT OF THE ARMIES APPROACHING – DAY
Missiles from both sides destroy lines of troops and heavy armor. Amongst the droids are many human and humanoid soldiers.
49. EXT. M2799A – GROUND – REPUBLIC LINE – DAY
A low angle of the fighting. Some clone troopers fall.
50. EXT. M2799A – GROUND – SEPARATIST LINE – DAY
A low angle of the fighting. Droids fall at a much faster rate than the clone troopers. One of the sidewinder missiles flies towards the camera. A fireball knocks the battle droids backwards. The living soldiers push onward fearlessly.
51. EXT. M2799A – THE SKY – DAY
Anakin’s fighter rips though a droid fighter.
52. INT. ANAKIN’S N-1 STARFIGHTER COCKPIT – M2779A – THE SKY – DAY
Anakin looks calm and in his element as he scans the skies.
53. EXT. M2799A – THE SKY – DAY
Anakin destroys another droid fighter.
54. INT. M2799A – REPUBLIC COMMAND POST – DAY
CLONE TROOPER
Sir, several ships just launched and are attempting to escape. They appear to be of Trade Federation design.
Obi-Wan looks out to see several ships rising above the factory.
OBI-WAN
Are they armed?
CLONE TROOPER
Yes sir.
OBI-WAN
Understood.
(Flips switch.)
Attention escaping vessels. You are considered hostile. Power down your weapons and return to the ground or you will be fired upon. This is your only warning.
(Looks up to clone trooper.)
Inform the fleet. They’re not to escape. They’ve many crimes to answer for.
CLONE TROOPER
Yes sir.
55. INT. SEPARATIST COMMAND CENTER
The room is equipped with real-time battle displays. The lighting is a bit brighter than in the conference room, however the décor is still sparse.
Dadonna, Count Dooku, and several battle droids are the only beings left.
DADONNA
Sir, the Trade Federation appears to be fleeing. Should I assign them escorts?
DOOKU
And compromise our defenses for the sake of those cowards? Nonsense. If the time comes for evacuation it will be at my order. Now, have all remaining fighters concentrate on the assigned special targets.
DADONNA
Yes, sir.
Dadonna returns to his duties.
BATTLE DROID
Sir we are receiving reports of a contingent of Jedi Knights in the building. Internal defenses are not effective.
DOOKU
Saboteurs? What appears to be their destination?
BATTLE DROID
This command station is estimated to be their target. They are approaching our location now.
DOOKU
I see.
In the background a green lightsaber cuts a molten orange line through the door. Dooku waves his hand. A blast doors close on the lightsaber slowing the Jedi assault.
DOOKU
General Dadonna, please go to the secondary command room aboard my personal ship and take command.
DADONNA
(Alarmed.)
But, sir? If you were lost…
DOOKU
Go. If I am lost…
(Trails off.)
If we are lost here today the dream of a government free of the corruption of the Republic will continue as long as there are people like you. Now go.
DADONNA
Yes sir.
As Dadonna leaves Dooku allows his contempt for the man to show for just a moment before the Jedi break in and destroy the few battle droids within the room. The ten surviving Jedi, including Mace Windu, Plo Koon, Ki-Adi-Mundi, and a new alien Jedi holding two lightsabers, one of which extends only one-third the length of a normal saber, form a semi-circle around the still calm Dooku.
56. INT. ANAKIN’S N-1 STARFIGHTER COCKPIT – M2779A – THE SKY – DAY
ANAKIN
(Hesitant to report the enemies’ strange behavior.)
General…droid starfighters appear to be regrouping.
57. INT. M2799A – REPUBLIC COMMAND POST – DAY
OBI-WAN
That’s strange. Their forces will be crippled if they go even a few minutes without air cover.
ANAKIN
(Over com.)
They’re up to something.
58. INT. ANAKIN’S N-1 STARFIGHTER COCKPIT – M2779A – THE SKY – DAY
OBI-WAN
(Over com.)
I agree. Take advantage of the situation but be alert.
59. EXT. SPACE – ABOVE THE PLANET M2799A
The Trade Federation ships are being blockaded from leaving the system. One explodes as it attempts to race past a Star Destroyer analog.
60. INT. REPUBLIC KNIGHT – BRIDGE
Bail Organa looks somberly out at the battle as fighters fly by the window and are destroyed. Very few Separatist ships remain and those that continue to fight are surrounded and taking heavy fire. A few ships have brief flames from hull breaches and the nearest is jettisoning escape pods.
61. INT. SEPARATIST COMMAND CENTER
Dooku is still surrounded by the ten Jedi who have broken into his command center.
DOOKU
(Gives a minimal bow.)
Welcome my comrades.
MACE
Enough Dooku. Surrender.
DOOKU
I have every intention of surrendering. Unfortunately for you now is not quite the time. I will, however, keep you entertained until that moment arrives.
Dooku waves his hand and super-battle droids begin pouring out of the several hidden entrances to the room. They immediately begin firing as Dooku takes out his lightsaber and begins fighting the Jedi. The Jedi are distracted by the battle droids and must divide their concentration between them and the talented Sith who is a match for any of their skills. Dooku fights well and, in a flurry of motion, defeats several Jedi as they deflect blaster shots. Any Jedi that concentrates on him must quickly shift their focus to the danger of the battle droids and are cut down by one of the two threats. Even as their numbers dwindle, the Jedi manage to destroy the battle droids. Finally, after less than a minute of intricately choreographed fighting, Mace Windu destroys the last of the battle droids and turns to Dooku. He finds himself the only Jedi to have survived the skirmish. The two stand facing each other with their lightsabers humming.
62. INT. M2799A – REPUBLIC COMMAND POST – DAY
OBI-WAN
Heads-up Colonel. They’re coming back.
63. INT. ANAKIN’S N-1 STARFIGHTER COCKPIT – M2779A – THE SKY – DAY
ANAKIN
I see them. Moving to intercept.
Anakin begins looking confused.
OBI-WAN
(Over com.)
Can you see their objective?
ANAKIN
It looks like some are setting up to hit you in the command center. I’ll take them myself. But I don’t see any specific objective for the others. It looks like they’re preparing to strafe the front lines.
64. INT. M2799A – REPUBLIC COMMAND POST – DAY
OBI-WAN
What? They’re close enough now that they’ll destroy almost as many battle droids as troopers.
65. INT. ANAKIN’S N-1 STARFIGHTER COCKPIT – M2779A – THE SKY – DAY
ANAKIN
I don’t understand it either…
(Looks surprised.)
Oh blast, they’re going after the Jedi!
66. INT. M2799A – REPUBLIC COMMAND POST – DAY
OBI-WAN
Are you sure?
67. EXT. M2799A – THE SKY – DAY
Half a squadron of droid fighters approach Republic fighters. Two explode but the rest keep going. They start firing on a knot of Jedi that had been cutting through the line of battle droids. Kit Fisto deflects several shots but flies backwards as one connects.
68. INT. ANAKIN’S N-1 STARFIGHTER COCKPIT – M2779A – THE SKY – DAY
ANAKIN
I’m sure.
69. INT. SEPARATIST COMMAND CENTER
Mace and Dooku are in their stare down. Mace glances at the real-time battle map in the center of the room.
MACE
End this now Dooku. Your forces are overwhelmed. You can’t win.
DOOKU
Even at this late a stage you do not even begin to understand.
Dooku launches an attack at Mace. The two fight across the room. Dooku’s more controlled style versus Mace’s power and grace. The battle droids litter the field. Occasionally they stop for a moment to perform some dialogue.
MACE
Understand what? I’ve heard your hypocritical speeches on the corruption of the Republic. Your Separatist movement serves no higher cause. This violent conflict has been for nothing.
DOOKU
(Smiles.)
This “violent conflict” has been more successful than I could possibly have imagined. Every step, from Kamino to this worthless planet, my Lord Sidious’s scheme has been breathtaking to behold.
MACE
(Confused.)
Victory wasn’t your goal?
Suddenly Dooku gets the best of Mace and puts his lightsaber through Mace’s abdomen. Dooku uses a Force Push to send Mace into a wall. Mace’s lightsaber flies out of his hand. He falls to the ground in great pain struggling for breath.
DOOKU
No. Only the war itself.
70. EXT. M2799A – THE SKY – DAY
Three droid starfighters strafe the position of another group of Jedi. They are followed by Republic starfighters resembling early Y-Wings. One droid fighter is destroyed just before they open fire. Another is destroyed moments after they cease their run.
71. INT. ANAKIN’S N-1 STARFIGHTER COCKPIT – M2779A – THE SKY – DAY
Laserfire reflects off of Anakin’s visor along with a flash from an explosion.
72. EXT. M2799A – THE SKY – DAY
Anakin’s fighter quickly moves to the tail of another droid fighter and dispatches that one as well. A moment before it explodes, however, a missile is fired at the command structure from the droid fighter. Anakin’s fighter bursts through the fireball in pursuit of the missile.
73. INT. M2799A – REPUBLIC COMMAND POST – DAY
Obi-Wan looks out at the side-winding missile.
74. INT. ANAKIN’S N-1 STARFIGHTER COCKPIT – M2779A – THE SKY – DAY
Anakin is tense with concentration.
75. EXT. M2799A – THE SKY – DAY
Anakin’s fighter fires its bright-green lasers.
76. INT. M2799A – REPUBLIC COMMAND POST – DAY
Obi-Wan watches as lasers connect with the missile that is only meters away from where he stands. Obi-Wan covers his eyes as it explodes close to the command structure spraying some debris against the protective window and over it, into the command structure. The concussion knocks one clone trooper off of his feet.
77. INT. ANAKIN’S N-1 STARFIGHTER COCKPIT – M2779A – THE SKY – DAY
ANAKIN
Command you’re clear. What’s our status?
78. INT. M2799A – REPUBLIC COMMAND POST – DAY
The supporting staff moves quickly. Obi-Wan manipulates the data on his screen.
OBI-WAN
They managed to strafe seven Jedi teams. I’ve already sent medics. The Separatist fighters are withdrawing again.
79. INT. ANAKIN’S N-1 STARFIGHTER COCKPIT – M2779A – THE SKY – DAY
ANAKIN
(Looking tired.)
Should we pursue?
80. INT. M2799A – REPUBLIC COMMAND POST – DAY
OBI-WAN
No. I believe they’re preparing for a withdrawal. Continue air support. The fleet can take care of anyone attempting to escape.
81. INT. SEPARATIST COMMAND CENTER – DAY
Dooku stands above a struggling Mace.
DOOKU
Do you feel that? Dozens of Jedi just became one with the Force. Your kind are now near extinction are they not? To think, had I not stumbled upon Sifo-Dyas’s treachery as he erased Kamino from the archives I might be amongst them, destroyed by that pitiful traitor as a part of my master’s great plans. Who would have guessed that revenge for my Padawan’s death would be my salvation?
MACE
There’s no salvation for you Dooku.
DOOKU
Ah, the Jedi’s unfaltering sense of righteousness. My master finds manipulating that conceit most satisfying of all. A pity you will never know the true face of your enemy or comprehend the game that you’ve been such a willing pawn within. But now it’s time to watch the final phase of my master’s plan and collect the rewards for my service. Good-bye my old friend.
Dooku moves slowly to kill Mace.
MACE
You underestimate the power of the Light.
Mace motions towards the ceiling and it begins to collapse. Dooku, as if humoring the ailing Jedi Master, reaches for the crumbling pieces of the ceiling with the Force. Suddenly a purple flash rushes across the screen and through Dooku’s neck. Dooku’s eyes look momentarily shocked as the camera angle changes to show Dooku’s body hitting the floor with the shadow of his head seen bouncing away from his body.
Mace Windu takes a moment to put himself at peace and look at his fallen Jedi comrades. He dies and becomes only another body amongst them.
82. INT. DOOKU’S SHIP – SECONDARY COMMAND CENTER – HANGAR
Dadonna conducts the battle to the best of his ability. He’s greatly concerned with the data he’s receiving from the real-time battle monitor.
DADONNA
We can’t wait any longer. Begin retreat and evacuation. All fighters form-up for escort duty. Any remaining orbiting ships break and retreat. Do your best to occupy the Republic Fleet while ground personnel are evacuated.
83. INT. M2799A – REPUBLIC COMMAND POST – DAY
Obi-Wan looks out to see several ships breaking for orbit with droid fighters escorting them.
OBI-WAN
There they go.
(Flips com switch.)
Admiral. The Separatists appear to be fleeing. They’re all yours. Our primary objective is being secured now.
84. INT. REPUBLIC KNIGHT – BRIDGE
BAIL ORGANA
Good work General. What’s left of the Separatist Fleet is in retreat as well. It appears the Force was indeed with us today.
85. INT. M2799A – REPUBLIC COMMAND POST – DAY
OBI-WAN
(Doubt in his voice.)
Yes, it would appear so.
86. INT. DOOKU’S SHIP – SECONDARY COMMAND CENTER – HANGAR
Dadonna watches as the second to last ship leaves the hanger. He takes one last look at the hanger entrance in the hopes of seeing Dooku emerge. Obviously saddened by the perceived loss of his leader, Dadonna hits a switch and powers up the ship.
87. INT. SEPARATIST HANGAR
Dodonna takes Dooku’s ship out of the hangar.
88. EXT. M2799A – OUTSIDE THE DROID FACTORY – DAY
Dodonna clears the hangar and begins climbing for the sky.
89. INT. DOOKU’S SHIP – BRIDGE – HEADING FOR SPACE
The sky turns from blue to black as Dodonna heads for orbit. During his trip out he sees several Separatist ships being boarded. He takes some fire and the ship shakes appropriately, but he manages to get through. Dodonna flicks a switch on the board.
90. EXT. M2799A – BATTLEFIELD – DAY
All battle droids immediately shut down. The survivors of the Republic forces begin cheering. The survivors of the Separatists begin putting their hands up in surrender.
91. INT. DOOKU’S SHIP – BRIDGE
Dadonna looks saddened by all that was lost as he hits a switch.
92. EXT. SPACE
With the fleet behind it Count Dooku’s ship deploys its solar sail as it flies away.
WIPE SCENE
93. EXT. M2799A – BATTLEFIELD – DAY
Black smoke is still billows from several points in the grounds. Fireworks are lit off over the devastation, but the music continues to be somber.
94. INT. SEPARATIST COMMAND CENTER
Bodies are carried out by paramedics. The camera pans to Anakin, now with a flesh hand, who is kneeling beside Mace Windu’s covered corpse. Obi-Wan approaches.
ANAKIN
I don’t understand. Did he hate us this much?
OBI-WAN
We don’t know what Dooku’s plans were. Thanks to Master Windu perhaps we never will.
ANAKIN
How many survivors?
OBI-WAN
On the planet only eighteen Jedi survived including you and myself. All together I believe the estimate is a little over three hundred.
(Puts a hand on Anakin’s shoulder.)
You did well out there today. You saved my life and countless others.
ANAKIN
(Not looking at Obi-Wan.)
Am I free to leave?
OBI-WAN
Yes.
ANAKIN
Then I’m going to Naboo. I need to return my fighter to Queen Jamillia and it’s a perfect setting to meditate.
OBI-WAN
I understand. Most of the survivors are doing the same.
ANAKIN
Where will you go?
OBI-WAN
Wherever the Council needs me. Some of us must remain active.
ANAKIN
You need to rest too. More than most of us.
OBI-WAN
I will. As soon as I’m relieved I will.
ANAKIN
I’ll meet you on Coruscant in two weeks then.
OBI-WAN
(Smiles.)
Okay.
WIPE SCENE
95. EXT. SPACE
Anakin’s N-1 Starfighter banks away from the Republic Knight.
96. INT. ANAKIN’S N-1 STARFIGHTER COCKPIT – M2779A – SPACE
Anakin flips a switch and starlines fill the view as he jumps to hyperspace.
97. INT. REPUBLIC KNIGHT – HANGAR
Obi-Wan, now dressed in his Jedi robes, watches out a viewport as Anakin’s N-1 Starfighter disappears. He turns to the spectacle of the returning clone troopers departing the hangar in their characteristically precise march. A second ship enters the hangar and another group of clone troopers march out of the transport in perfect formation.
Bail Organa approaches Obi-Wan.
OBI-WAN
(Indicating the clone troopers.)
What do you think will become of them?
BAIL ORGANA
They’re highly trained soldiers. Most of them should find a place in the galaxy. I have greater concerns as to what’s to become of the Separatists.
OBI-WAN
Many will demand justice. They broke a peace that lasted a thousand generations.
BAI ORGANA
A waste. They reminded us of why war had been avoided for so long. Now we show them why democracy can still work.
OBI-WAN
The Senate hasn’t changed.
BAIL ORGANA
Everything will change. A quarter of the galaxy must be readmitted to the Republic. Moments in history such as this are rare and fleeting. But the manner in which we handle them will echo for some time.
OBI-WAN
You think it’ll be enough to unspoil the Republic?
BAIL ORGANA
It’s enough to give me hope. This opportunity is the only bright spot I see in this war. I don’t intend to let it pass unnoticed. With the crisis ended Chancellor Palpatine will be forced to step down. My service to the fleet should earn me more than enough support to succeed him. Can I expect the Jedi’s support on this matter?
OBI-WAN
I can’t speak for the Jedi, of course. But if you can-
A communications officer appears cutting off Obi-Wan’s response.
COMMUNICATIONS OFFICER
General Kenobi. A message from Master Yoda has been received.
OBI-WAN
Let me see it.
A small hologram of Yoda is displayed.
YODA
Master Kenobi. Immediately recalling all Jedi to Coruscant the Jedi Council is. Decide we must our future. Skywalker you are to bring.
The hologram dissipates.
OBI-WAN
Fifteen minutes earlier and I’d have been spared a trip to Naboo. Master Yoda usually has better timing than this.
BAIL ORGANA
(Nods.)
I’ll see to it that you’re provided a shuttle for your journey. If you didn’t need to fetch Colonel Skywalker you could travel with us. The fleet’s also been ordered to Coruscant. It appears our disbandment will take place there.
Obi-Wan nods.
WIPE SCENE
98. EXT. NABOO – THEED SPACEPORT
Anakin’s starfighter lands.
99. EXT. NABOO – ANAKIN AND PADMÉ’S HOME
Anakin and Padmé’s home is of medium size and in the style of Naboo’s architecture. It’s isolated, surrounded only by fields, gardens, and a river flowing behind it.
Anakin arrives in a four-seat speeder. As he gets out he takes in the beauty of Naboo. Artoo faithfully follows behind for a moment but veers towards See-Threepio. Ryoo and Pooja, Padmé’s niece and nephew, run to greet him. He lifts one up for a moment before sending them on their way. He walks through the door.
100. INT. NABOO – ANAKIN AND PADMÉ’S HOUSE
As Anakin walks through the door he sees Sola, Padmé’s sister, in the dining room to the left. She gives a start but Anakin puts a finger to his lips to keep her quiet. She gets a mischievous grin and points in the direction of a den. Anakin cocks an eyebrow in confusion at Sola but says nothing as he passes her on his way to the den.
Padmé is sitting with her back to Anakin working on something with a datapad. Pictures of the newly ended war are on a television-like screen off to the left.
ANAKIN
Padmé?
Padmé turns her head in surprise. Seeing Anakin she smiles.
PADMÉ
Ani!
Padmé has a little difficulty getting up. It’s minor enough that it could be seen as a small injury of the leg or ankle to Anakin. Anakin begins moving towards her.
ANKAIN
Are you okay?
Padmé turns her profile to Anakin to reveal her pregnancy.
PAMDE
I’ve never felt better.
Anakin is overjoyed at the revelation. The two embrace.
ANAKIN
I can’t believe it.
(They kiss.)
A baby!
PADMÉ
I’m sorry I couldn’t tell you sooner.
ANAKIN
This is why you resigned from the Senate?
PADMÉ
(A little embarrassed.)
Yes. An “unmarried” and pregnant Senator can’t keep questions from being asked. Here on Naboo it’s just a minor local scandal.
They kiss again.
Padmé notices that Anakin’s hand appears real and lifts it up with a questioning look in her eye.
Anakin gives an ironic shrug.
ANAKIN
Surprise.
Padmé laughs.
PADMÉ
And here I’ve been worried you’d come back with more parts missing.
Anakin rubs her belly with his new hand.
ANAKIN
I’m so sorry I couldn’t be here sooner. I had to pay respects to the queen and…
PADMÉ
It’s okay. It’s okay. I understand. You’re here now and that’s-
Anakin notices that Padmé’s eyes have suddenly widened in surprise. Anakin follows her eyes to the front door where Obi-Wan is standing even more surprised.
Shocked at being caught Anakin momentarily reverts to being a Padawan.
ANAKIN
Master!
OBI-WAN
(Settles himself for a moment. His mouth is dry.)
I’ve been ordered to bring you to Coruscant immediately. I’ll be outside.
Anakin looks to Padmé and then runs to the door.
101. EXT. NABOO – ANAKIN AND PADMÉ’S HOUSE
A ship is now parked a short distance from the house.
Anakin chases after the retreating Obi-Wan.
ANAKIN
Obi-Wan!
Obi-Wan stops but does not turn around. Anakin catches up with him.
ANAKIN
You won’t tell the Council will you?
Padmé emerges from the house but stays in the doorway. Artoo, Threepio, and Sola are spectators.
OBI-WAN
(Turns around.)
You know I must.
ANAKIN
(Desperate.)
No. If you do you know they’ll expel me from the Order.
OBI-WAN
I believe they will.
ANAKIN
Then you can’t tell them.
OBI-WAN
(Doesn’t look Anakin in the eye.)
I can’t lie to the Council Anakin. Not even for you.
ANAKIN
You don’t have to lie. Just don’t tell them.
OBI-WAN
Don’t ask this of me.
ANAKIN
(Beginning to become angry.)
You’re holding me back again. The first chance you get you treat me as your Padawan.
OBI-WAN
(Confused.)
What?
ANAKIN
You’re jealous. You won’t let me pass you.
Obi-Wan is visibly hurt by the comment and somewhat angry. He takes a moment to control himself before he answers.
OBI-WAN
(With controlled emotion.)
Is that what you think of me Anakin? You think I want to see you to fail? Anakin. You’re the Chosen One. Possibly the most talented Jedi our galaxy has ever seen. If simple ego had a place in this I assure you I would not choose to make my place in history as the Jedi who failed in your training.
Anakin is silent for a long moment thinking about this.
ANAKIN
You don’t have to fail.
OBI-WAN
(Points to Padmé.)
And what of your child? Do you want him to become a Jedi?
ANAKIN
(Surprised by the question.)
Of course.
OBI-WAN
Well then you’ll have to make the same decision your mother did. Only you won’t have him until he’s nine. You can’t ever be a part of his life.
ANAKIN
You’re taking my child?
Seeing that he’s gotten through to Anakin, Obi-Wan eases off and even becomes comforting.
OBI-WAN
If you wish him to be a Jedi. Yes. That’s our way. We can’t burden him with the memories of you. You won’t be allowed to torture, to distract, to anger him as we both know the loss of your mother did to you.
(Looks to down.)
He can’t long for a family as you have.
(Shakes head.)
You must leave the Order.
Padmé reaches Anakin from behind and comforts him with a soft half-hug. She hadn’t thought of the possibility of losing their children either and needs his support as well. Anakin returns Padmé’s hug but at the same time doesn’t let his eyes off of Obi-Wan.
PADMÉ
Anakin.
OBI-WAN
You’ll be allowed to live here in peace as you choose Anakin. Here, with Padmé. I’m sure the two of you will happy lives together. This is the only way.
(Turns and starts walking to his speeder.)
Come with me to face the Council or stay. It’s up to you.
Anakin turns to Padmé.
PADMÉ
Go.
ANAKIN
There’s so much…
PADMÉ:
I know you’ll be back with me soon.
ANAKIN
I will.
Anakin kisses Padmé on the cheek and follows Obi-Wan. Artoo tweets at Threepio and follows.
SEE-THREEPIO
Good luck Artoo.
102. EXT. ANAKIN AND PADMÉ’S HOUSE
Obi-Wan’s shuttle takes off.
103. INT. OBI-WAN’S SHUTTLE – COCKPIT – HEADING FOR SPACE
As the sky turns from blue to black Anakin and Obi-Wan co-exist uneasily. The com bleeps catching Obi-Wan’s attention.
Anakin tries to read the message over Obi-Wan’s shoulder.
ANAKIN
What is it?
OBI-WAN
A distress signal from Belkhan IV.
Obi-Wan reads some data from the nearest screen. And begins making a course correction.
ANAKIN
What are you doing? I thought the Jedi Council had recalled us immediately.
(Looks at the data.)
And they’re part of the mining guild.
OBI-WAN
The war’s over Anakin, we can’t refuse help because of any ties to the Separatists. The Belkhan system’s only a few hours out of the way. The Jedi Council can wait half a day for our arrival.
ANAKIN
(Shrugs.)
Okay. But don’t blame me if we’re the last ones there.
Obi-Wan gives Anakin a short glance as the stars turn into lines.
104. EXT. SPACE
The shuttle flies directly away into hyperspace.
WIPE SCENE
105. EXT. BELKHAN IV – NIGHT
The moon is a dark gray and filled with sharp landscape. At first glance one might assume that the planet has no atmosphere. It is not a dead planet, though. Large creatures fight in the distance. A river in the foreground is a disgusting dark shade of green. The camera pans to an ugly fortress. Its purpose is industrial mining of the planet’s resources. The size of the fortress is equivalent to a moderate city. In the background Obi-Wan’s ship lowers itself for a landing.
106. INT. BELKHAN IV – LANDING PAD
The ceiling closes after letting Obi-Wan’s shuttle through.
Der’k Klavan, a brawny gray alien, is waiting for the Jedi as they step down the ramp of the shuttle. Anakin’s arm is again mechanical.
DER’K KLAVAN
Thanks so much for coming.
(Indicates himself.)
Der’k Klavan Vice-Administrator of this factory.
ANAKIN
Where’s the Administrator?
DER’K KLAVAN
Dead. Bought it two days ago. I’m in charge here.
OBI-WAN
Your distress signal wasn’t very specific. What’s the situation?
DER’K KLAVAN
A rhek’nem breached the perimeter several days ago. We sealed the breach but a whole pack of them are running loose in the east sector.
ANAKIN
You’ve got to have weapons for this sort of thing.
DER’K KLAVAN
We did. The hunting party was killed two days ago and all our heavy weapons were destroyed. Normal blasters just aren’t effective against their armor.
OBI-WAN
Take us to them then.
DER’K KLAVAN
Follow me.
The group boards an interior shuttle.
107. INT. BELKHAN IV – INTERIOR SHUTTLE – EN ROUTE TO REFINERY
The scenery changes in the windows to show the various activities of the mining station.
DER’K KLAVAN
You two showed up just in time. They were stuck in some abandoned living quarters. But they just broke through into the refinery and storage bays.
ANAKIN
You want us to protect your product?
DER’K KLAVAN
Of course. That’s our life. Did you take a good look at the planet? We’re hardly self-sufficient on this station.
OBI-WAN
Don’t worry. Anakin and myself have gotten through situations a lot worse than this.
DER’K KLAVAN
Thank goodness for the Jedi.
Anakin looks at Der’k Klavan with a raised eyebrow for a few moments.
DER’K KLAVAN
Don’t look at me like that. Our superiors supported that crazy Separatist scheme, not us. No one here asked for war.
OBI-WAN
(Puts a hand on Anakin’s shoulder.)
As I’m sure is the case in most wars. Do you know how many of these beasts are left?
DER’K KLAVAN
The sensors that weren’t smashed say seven are left. The hunting party managed to take out eight.
The transport stops and they get out.
108. INT. BELKHAN IV – OUTSIDE THE REFINERY
Some men are welding all the doors shut trying to keep the monsters from getting through.
DER’K KLAVAN
(Points up.)
Use that catwalk. It’ll get you in without letting them out.
A ladder is plainly in sight, which they can use. But the Jedi just shrug and jump up to the catwalk. They start walking into the refinery.
109. INT. BELKHAN IV – REFINERY
Obi-Wan and Anakin walk out over the refinery well above the destruction they see below. The rhek’nems are trashing the place. They bang their armored heads at equipment and the walls and rip wiring out of exposed pipes. The rhek’nems are two and a half meters tall, armored, and bipedal creatures. Their hands contain nasty claws and occasionally they let out high-pitched roars. The refinery itself is a dimly lit, little is on but bright green flames periodically burst from a few locations. Obi-Wan looks at Anakin as if to say “what are you gonna do?” and jumps to the lower level. The camera stays on Anakin for a moment.
ANAKIN
(Sarcastically.)
Oh how I’ll miss this.
The camera cuts back to Obi-Wan’s fall. His lightsaber ignites on the way down. As he lands he cuts off one of the creature’s heads. Immediately five of the creatures turn to him as the creatures heard him to the nearest wall.
Anakin drops in behind one of the creatures and ignites his lightsaber. He charges the nearest rhek’nem. It turns to swat at him as he comes into range. Anakin neatly takes off its arm.
Obi-Wan begins an assault on the weakened end of his box and attacks one of the creatures, backing it up. Another rhek’nem charges at him.
Anakin finishes the rhek’nem he’s already injured and turns to see Obi-Wan’s danger.
ANAKIN
Obi-Wan. Behind you!
Anakin leaps in the way of the charging rhek’nem and neatly bisects it. However, he turns just in time to take a spear to his abdomen from another creature. He doubles over as the rhek’nem forces him into the wall. Anakin’s lightsaber flies out of his hand as the creature stands over him. In the background Obi-Wan runs at the creature.
From behind we see Obi-Wan as he opens up his stride and throws his lightsaber at the creature. The rhek’nem’s head is severed and it falls on the dazed Anakin. Obi-Wan recalls his lightsaber to his hand and turns in time to intercept another rhek’nem. The two remaining creatures follow immediately behind him.
There is a close-up of Obi-Wan’s face as he swings his blade at the two very close rhek’nems. Obi-Wan extinguishes his blade as he falls to the floor at Anakin’s feet. A tear can be seen on the left side of his pants and the right side of his abdomen.
Anakin, slightly concussed, pushes the remains of the rhek’nem away and falls to his side. Gingerly he starts laughing lightly.
OBI-WAN
Great. I was rather hoping you would call for the medics this time.
ANAKIN
(Somewhat sarcastically.)
Sorry Obi-Wan. Just a bout of nostalgia
(Tries to move. Winces.)
And I think my ribs are broken.
OBI-WAN
Nothing bacta can’t cure in a few hours. They’ll be here to get us as soon as they get a good look at their sensors.
Anakin indicates one of the last rhek’nems Obi-Wan defeated. Its front is facing away from the camera but it’s clear Obi-Wan did not cut off any parts.
ANAKIN
I think that one’s still alive.
OBI-WAN
You’re right. He’s fading though.
(Notices Anakin’s lightsaber.)
You dropped this. Again.
Obi-Wan tosses Anakin his lightsaber. It hits the floor half a meter from Anakin and rolls to a stop against his body.
Anakin picks up the lightsaber and attaches it to his belt.
ANAKIN
The poor things seem to fly all over the place. By the way, thanks for saving me again. Interesting strategy. Never seen that before.
OBI-WAN
An act of desperation I assure you.
ANAKIN
It worked.
(Silence for a few seconds.)
Whatever happens with the Jedi Council if you ever need me for anything you just have to ask. I’ll always be there.
OBI-WAN
You know. That does mean a lot.
ANAKIN
Enough for you forget what you saw?
OBI-WAN
Let’s not start that again.
Camera goes to overhead shot of the two of them.
OBI-WAN
You don’t want to ruin this beautiful moment.
ANAKIN
Of course not.
A sound is made at the doors and, as both Jedi look in that direction, medics come in.
WIPE SCENE
110. EXT. SPACE – ABOVE CORUSCANT
The Repbulic fleet is in orbit around the planet.
111. INT. SENATE BUILDING – PALPATINE’S OFFICE – DAY
Several Senators, including Jar Jar Binks and the returning Bail Organa, enter Palpatine’s, office. They pass the Palpatine’s personal guards, who have taken to wearing full helmets, on the way in.
PALPATINE
Welcome back Admiral. You are to be congratulated on your campaign. It’s my understanding that this Republic owes much to your leadership.
BAIL ORGANA
(Gives Palpatine a formal half-bow.)
The Army of the Republic waits in orbit for your command. Am I correct in expecting that it be soon?
PALPATINE
Good. I am indeed preparing an address the Senate on this matter. I’d like to relieve you of command so you may join your colleagues for what, I believe, will mark a new beginning for our government.
BAIL ORGANA
I look forward to it, Chancellor. I’m sure it will be a fitting farewell.
PALPATINE
(Smiles ambiguously at the compliment.)
I won’t disappoint Senator.
112. EXT. CORUSCANT – JEDI TEMPLE – DAY
The Jedi Temple building looks like a half-pyramid with spires sticking out of it. The streets below are full, but little traffic goes into the Jedi Temple.
113. INT. CORUSCANT – JEDI TEMPLE – MAIN HALLWAY
High arches are prevalent in the hallway’s architecture. The color scheme is light and somewhat reddish.
Yoda greets Obi-Wan and Anakin. Anakin wears his prosthetic arm.
YODA
Good to see you both it is.
(To Obi-Wan.)
Chosen you have been.
OBI-WAN
Chosen for what Master?
YODA
Chosen for a seat on the Jedi Council. A great honor it is.
OBI-WAN
It is.
Yoda notes the lack of enthusiasm and congratulations from Anakin.
OBI-WAN
However, I have something I must report to the Council before I can accept.
YODA
Immediately arranged that can be. Come.
Obi-Wan and Anakin follow Yoda.
114. INT. CORUSCANT – JEDI TEMPLE – JEDI COUNCIL CHAMBER – DAY
The circular room is open. The sun leaves a shadow upon half the inhabitants of the room.
Yoda struggles into his chair. There are four new Council Members and four empty seats. Among them are the returning Yarael Poof, Depa Billiba, and Adi Gallia.
YODA
What have you to report Master Kenobi?
OBI-WAN
I’ll allow Anakin to explain.
Anakin steps forward but has difficulty facing the Council Members. Specifically Yoda whom he is directly in front of. He looks up a few times while speaking but generally averts his gaze to the floor and other imaginary points along the wall.
ANAKIN
I have…
(Pauses.)
…broken my vow to the Jedi. After the battle on Geonosis Senator Amidala and myself were married on Naboo. We’ve kept our relationship a secret ever since.
YODA
(Pauses.)
Most unexpected this is, and most disappointing.
DEPA BILLIBA
Have you anything to add?
ANAKIN
She’s pregnant. She’ll give birth within weeks.
The room is silent for a few seconds.
YODA
Our congratulations you have.
(Pause.)
Clear on this the Code is. If ever an exception were found the Chosen One it would be made for. But to ignore this we cannot.
Anakin continues looking at the ground, but is visibly gaining a bit of confidence.
ANAKIN
Are the Jedi so rigid?
(Looks straight into Yoda’s eyes.)
You know my destiny. You would cast it aside?
YODA
(Points to Anakin.)
Speak to us not of rigidity young Skywalker. For thirteen years the Jedi’s borders you have known. Cast aside your mandate, violated your oath, many times you have. Look for rigidity within yourself you never have. If a reckless Jedi you are allowed to remain, at what price may Balance come may we ask.
Obi-Wan steps to Anakin’s side to deflect any more confrontation between Anakin and the Council.
OBI-WAN
What is to be his fate?
Yoda looks to the rest of the Council and receives minimal nods from each.
YODA
Removed from the Jedi Order he is.
Close-up of Anakin. Then back to Yoda.
YODA
Cloudy is his fate however. Wish him peace we do.
Anakin bows his head. It is very unsure because of the blow he just received. A slight flash of anger goes through him and he begins to retreat from his judges.
YODA
Your lightsaber we will keep.
Anakin stops in his tracks and glares at Yoda. He walks to Obi-Wan and takes out his lightsaber. After a few breaths he flips it over and hands it to his former master.
ANAKIN
Give it to my child when he or she’s old enough.
Obi-Wan nods while placing the lightsaber within his robes.
OBI-WAN
You have my word.
Anakin walks to the doors of the Jedi Council. He turns just in time to see Obi-Wan assuming his seat amongst the Jedi Council. They catch eyes and Anakin’s features become ambiguous as he walks out the door.
115. EXT. CORUSCANT – JEDI TEMPLE – ENTRANCE – DAY
Anakin walks out of the Jedi Temple to a platform that passes for street level on Coruscant with a small sack of belongings. As people and aliens walk by Artoo roles towards him and gives a mournful whistle. Anakin ignores the droid for a moment and flexes his hand at his chest in obvious frustration as he looks up at the huge spires in the sky towering above him. Artoo tweets again questioningly.
ANAKIN
It’s okay Artoo.
(Pats Artoo on the dome.)
Let’s go home.
The music begins as Anakin walks away from the Jedi Temple. A small man in a military uniform approaches Anakin. The music dies as the man begins to speak.
Lt. KAIN
Jedi Skywalker?
ANAKIN
I’m Skywalker.
Lt. KAIN
Chancellor Palpatine bids you an audience.
ANAKIN
(Smiles.)
Lead the way.
116. EXT. CORUSCANT – SENATE BUILDING – DAY
In the foreground Elan Sleezebaggano, dressed in extravagant clothing, delivers an open-air sermon to a large and attentive crowd.
117. INT. CORUSCANT – SENATE BUILDING – SENATE
The cylinder-shaped room looks much the same as in previous episodes. But several of the booths remain empty.
Several Senators, including Jar Jar Binks, are recognized. End focus on Palpatine, in his usual place as Supreme Chancellor, the center of the building. In front of him is a teleprompter.
PALPATINE
For the past two years our beloved Republic has existed under a shadow of armed conflict that has brought untold suffering to billions. At last our grand army has won their final victory against the Separatist menace. Some believe the time of crisis passed with the cessation of open violence.
(Applause.)
The crisis, however, continues.
(Applause lowers and stops.)
The Separatists have not capitulated into reentering our great government. The Jedi have seen their noble Order fall to near extinction. Their sacrifice is great, but we are forced to recognize that they will be unable to maintain the stability we so desperately need. And the traitorous economic powers must be replaced. It is under these conditions that I cite the Emergency Powers Act to institute this New Order. First, all trade, banking, and commerce will be controlled, temporarily, through government agencies. Second, the Separatist planets shall be annexed into the control of regional governors immediately. They will be allowed to regain their vote in our Senate at a time to be decided later. Third, the Army of the Republic will stand indefinitely to assist the Jedi Knights in maintaining order. A contract to reinforce the depleted army has been received by the Kaminoans. Finally, I order the commissioning the creation of an Academy so that young officers of bravery and good character may guide our grand army in their duty.
Bail Organa appears before the center podium.
BAIL ORGANA
(Angry.)
Chancellor. This is madness. I assure you, I did not spend the past two years fighting the Separatists so that a new Empire might be born.
PALPATINE
I believe you will find these steps to be both necessary and proper if given sufficient thought Senator. Furthermore you are out of order. Please return to your place.
BAIL ORGANA
I will return to my place when this has ended. I call for an immediate vote to strip the Supreme Chancellor of his emergency powers.
Across the chamber some enthusiastic support is given. Some are so much under the influence of Palpatine they give nothing but cynical derision. But most of the Senators, not expecting this battle of wills, do not react at all. The Senator from Chandrila, Mon Mothma, watches with a poker face. For his part, Jar Jar Binks doesn’t seem to understand what’s going on.
PALPATINE
Your service to the Republic is admired and appreciated Senator, but your political ambition to become the next Supreme Chancellor will not be allowed to undermine the security of countless billions. Your motion for a vote is denied. You will return to your place Senator.
Bail Organa returns his platform to its place amongst the Senators. He then turns and leaves the chamber. Turmoil engulfs the Senate the camera moves in for a close-up on Palpatine.
WIPE SCENE
118. EXT. NABOO – ANAKIN AND PADMÉ’S HOME - NIGHT
A herd of shaak walks, single file, through the front yard.
119. INT. NABOO – ANAKIN AND PADMÉ’S HOME - DEN
Padmé is pacing while Sola remains comfortably on a sofa.
SOLA
You didn’t think of this before?
PADMÉ
I should have. But my husband’s been in a war zone for months. I never dreamed the Jedi would take my children.
SOLA
You thought Ani would train them himself?
PADMÉ
I didn’t think anything. I hadn’t planned their lives out beyond building them a nursery.
SOLA
You know you could deny them. They don’t have any right to your children. And I understand that they won’t have enough masters for every adept anyway.
PADMÉ
(Rubs her belly.)
Do I have the right to do keep this from them?
SOLA
(Waves away the question as if absurd.)
You’re their mother. Of course you do.
PADMÉ
What if mother hadn’t allowed me to go into politics?
SOLA
I don’t know. In the same place you are now. With a few less cares I’d imagine.
PADMÉ
Or a refugee hiding under Trade Federation control.
SOLA
You don’t know that.
PADMÉ
You weren’t there Sola.
SOLA
(Take’s Padmé’s hand.)
Either way it was your choice, not mother’s. You’ll always be a powerful person on this planet. If they want to make a difference, they won’t have to be Jedi.
Padmé chews on that See-Threepio enters.
THREEPIO
Excuse me Madame Padmé. Queen Jamillia has sent word for you. It appears to be urgent.
Padmé looks over to Sola who roles her eyes.
PADMÉ
Very well. Inform the Queen I will be there shortly.
120. EXT. NABOO – THEED – ROYAL PALACE – NIGHT
It is raining in the capital. Lightening illuminates the waterfalls and palace.
121. INT. NABOO – THEED – ROYAL PALACE – THRONE ROOM
Padmé enters the Queen’s throne-room. Sio Bibble greets the former Queen Amidala and escorts her to Queen Jamillia.
SIO BIBBLE
Greetings child. Your presence has been missed.
PADMÉ
Yours as well old friend.
(Looks up to Queen Jamillia. Starts speaking in low conspiratorial tones.)
Should I be worried?
SIO BIBBLE
(Mimics Padmé’s low tone.)
I should think so. As impossible as it is to believe, some seem to think that one war won’t be enough for our lifetime. Good luck child.
Padmé and Sio Bibble reach Queen Jamillia. Sio Bibble stands off.
PADMÉ
You sent for me my Queen?
With a hand gesture Queen Jamillia dismisses her entourage. As her advisors leave the she beckons Padmé forward.
QUEEN JAMILLIA
Yes. Has word reached you of Palpatine’s New Order.
PADMÉ
It has majesty.
QUEEN JAMILLIA
Good. Bail Organa sent us a communiqué. It seems Alderaan is considering becoming the first of a new wave of secession. As Palpatine’s home planet he wishes for Naboo’s support. He will receive it. We wish for you to travel to Alderaan as our delegate and attempt to bring the matter to a peaceful resolution.
PADMÉ
For a matter of this importance surely you wish to be present yourself?
QUEEN JAMILLIA
For a matter of this importance I wish to send Naboo’s best. Too much depends upon this mission being successful to allow anything less.
PADMÉ
I don’t know.
QUEEN JAMILLIA
(Leans in to Padmé)
I’m not blind. I can see why you’re hesitant. But Naboo needs your strength again now. You made him Supreme Chancellor in the first place. He’ll listen to you. You’ve never denied us before.
Padmé does not like the idea but hesitantly shakes her head “yes”.
WIPE SCENE
122. EXT. CORUSCANT – SENATE BUILDING – NIGHT
Barely seen in the foreground, several probe droids move towards the building.
123. INT. CORUSCANT – SENATE BUILDING – HALLWAY
Anakin walks down the hallway preceded by Lt. Kain and followed by Artoo. They reach a door guarded on each side by Palpatine’s personal guards. Lt. Kain motions for Anakin to go in. Artoo begins to follow but is stopped with the butt of the left guard’s blaster rifle. Anakin stops and places his hand on the droid’s dome.
ANAKIN
Wait here Artoo.
Artoo whistles indignantly as Anakin walks into the room.
124. INT. CORUSCANT – SENATE BUILDING – PALPATINE’S OFFICE – NIGHT
Anakin passes Palpatine’s personal guards as he enters. The door silently closes behind him.
ANAKIN
(Bows.)
You sent for me Chancellor?
PALPATINE
Yes. Please sit.
Anakin takes a seat as Palpatine sits across from him at his desk.
PALPATINE
I’ve heard rumors of your new standing in the Jedi Order. Are my sources correct?
ANAKIN
They are.
PALPATINE
A shame. We find ourselves in much the same position. We have both followed our instincts and are unfortunately misunderstood because of them. I cannot imagine the utter humiliation of losing all you have worked for, for no reason higher than falling in love. You did an excellent job hiding your relationship. Only whispers have reached my ear even now.
ANAKIN
Thank-you.
PALPATINE
For my own difficulties I have only wished to serve this Republic as best I could in these dark times. I swear if I could see another way to handle this I would jump at the opportunity.
ANAKIN
You’ve done well Chancellor, in extraordinary times. The people see that.
Anakin begins to feel that something is not right. He begins to look around the room.
PALPATINE
Perhaps-
Without warning Anakin flicks his hand at something behind Palpatine. A blaster shot is fired into the ceiling. Anakin stands up. A moment later Artoo is heard outside blaring a warning.
PALPATINE
(Confused, and somewhat afraid Anakin will attack.)
What’s-
Anakin’s eyes flash around the room. Behind Palpatine a flash of movement is seen.
ANAKIN
Duck.
Anakin leaps at the unseen attacker. He hits something solid. During a brief wrestling match parts of Anakin disappear from the camera’s view for moments at a time. Palpatine’s guards move to assist. Anakin suddenly has a blaster and uses it. Slowly the image of a translucent skinned alien becomes more visible.
GUARD
It’s a defel. Sir we need to move you while-
Anakin knocks Palpatine down as a blaster hits the spot they just vacated.
The guards look through the window to see several small droids at the window. Security begins destroying them but there are too many and they are quickly replaced by new ones.
ANAKIN
We’ve got to go now.
Anakin, still holding the defel’s blaster, pushes Palpatine through the door.
125. INT. CORUSCANT – SENATE BUILDING – HALLWAY
Several guards have appeared along with Lt. Kain, who is, apparently, in charge of security. They start quickly moving as they talk.
Lt. KAIN
Sir, we have a safe room two floors down.
ANAKIN
(Closes his eyes and reopens them.)
No good. We’ve got to get him out of the building. Where’s the hanger?
An explosion occurs behind the group. The room they were in is destroyed. Palpatine is knocked to the floor. Anakin picks him up and keeps moving him forward.
Lt. KAIN
One floor up.
(Points to the door.)
Emergency stairs.
ANAKIN
Good.
They run up the stairs. Behind them Artoo gets his jets out and is briefly seen following after the retreating group.
126. INT. CORUSCANT – SENATE BUILDING – HANGAR – DAY
The small group bursts through the doors. Anakin and Lt. Kain actively scan the area.
ANAKIN
Any one in particular?
PALPATINE
(Points to his personal craft.)
That one.
The guards begin to pile in. Anakin again has a premonition and holds Palpatine back.
ANAKIN
(Shouting to the guards.)
No wait.
The ship explodes leaving Anakin and Palpatine alone. From the outside several probes appear. They produce small blasters and begin firing. Anakin pushes Palpatine behind him and absorbs the blaster shots with his free left hand.
PALPATINE
(Uncommonly calm during this crisis.)
Impressive. Most Jedi rely on their lightsaber for deflecting energy.
Anakin continues to absorb blaster bolts with his left hand while shooting probe droids with his right.
ANAKIN
Being electrocuted isn’t an experience I want to repeat.
Artoo rolls to another craft, inserts his jack and soon whistles. When Anakin hears Artoo’s whistle he leads Palpatine into the passenger seat of the craft. This speeder seems older and has an open top. Anakin immediately powers it up and takes off. They speed towards the probe droids. Some droids move to other ships. As Anakin and Palpatine near them the ships explode. Anakin nearly loses control as they leave the building.
127. EXT. CORUSCANT – THE SKY – DAY
The speeder races out of the hangar followed by a fireball. The probe droids follow but Anakin easily outraces them. Bolts continue coming for a few moments and Anakin fires back with the defel’s blaster. Finally the shooting stops and Anakin puts down the blaster and drives with both hands while looking forward.
PALPATINE
(Still composed.)
Take us to grid 42A.
ANAKIN
The military landing area?
PALPATINE
Yes. It appears I must travel with a military escort to Alderaan.
(Turns to Anakin.)
You proved yourself quite capable there. Can I interest you in heading my security detail? I need someone of your talents.
Anakin’s momentarily intrigued by the offer, but remembers Padmé’s condition.
ANAKIN
I have other responsibilities.
PALPATINE
Temporarily then. Only for the duration of my trip to Alderaan. You need not worry of breaking any promises to Amidala. I’m told she plans to attend the meetings herself.
ANAKIN
(Glances at Palpatine surprised.)
Okay.
PALPATINE
Good. Good.
WIPE SCENE
128. INT. ANAKIN AND PADMÉ’S HOME – BEDROOM
Padmé is hurriedly preparing for her trip to Alderaan. Her sister, Sola, and Threepio are following.
Padmé looks at the clothes in her closet, including the one she will wear in her final scenes. She turns to Threepio.
PADMÉ
Have my ship prepared. Contact Captain Typho and ask him to coordinate security.
THREEPIO
Yes Madame Padmé.
Threepio leaves the room.
SOLA
I have a bad feeling about this. Are you sure this is a good idea? You don’t have much time now.
PADMÉ
It is not a good idea and worse timing. I’m walking into the very flashpoint of a potential war zone. My mind isn’t entirely clear. I don’t fit into any of these clothes. I’ve just learned that Anakin has been cast out by the Jedi Order and I won’t be here when he needs me. Yes, Sola, I’m quite sure this isn’t a good idea.
Sola takes the outburst without expression. Padmé turns to Sola, most of her anger gone, and gives her a kiss on the cheek.
PADMÉ
I’m sorry. You’re just looking out for me.
Padmé gives up with packing for the moment and sits on the bed. Sola follows sitting close.
PADMÉ
But, the queen is right. I’m most qualified.
SOLA
Most qualified maybe, but not the best choice. You can still decline. No one questions your devotion. But you need to let the galaxy spin on its own eventually.
(Rubs Padmé’s belly.)
If you’ve been waiting for a sign, the Force has obviously given up on subtlety with you.
PADMÉ
I can’t stand by to watch another round of civil wars begin. You know that’s not…
Padmé feels a contraction.
SOLA
You okay?
PADMÉ
Yeah.
SOLA
Subtle as a drunken wookie.
Padmé wears a betrayed mask. The contraction passes.
Threepio reenters the room.
THREEPIO
Excuse me. Captain Typho is on his way to speak with you in person.
PADMÉ
Thank-you Threepio. Can you please finish here for me?
THREEPIO
Of course.
SOLA
Would you stop. You’re not going.
PADMÉ
Sola, you’re not going to win this.
SOLA
At least bring a doctor with you.
THREEPIO
Excuse me. But I’ve already arranged for a doctor to accompany us.
PADMÉ
Thank-you.
Sola looks like she’s going to argue again, but sees that Padmé’s mind is completely made up. Sola resigns herself.
SOLA
(With concern and a hint of fear.)
Promise me you’ll be careful.
PADMÉ
I’ll do my best.
WIPE SCENE
129. EXT. CORUSCANT – JEDI TEMPLE – JEDI COUNCIL CHAMBERS – NIGHT
YODA
A decision we must make on our involvement in the Alderaan crisis.
OBI-WAN
I’ve spoken with Bail Organa on many occasions. He won’t enter into conflict with the Republic lightly.
ADI GALLIA
Regardless, his actions may lead to great suffering.
OBI-WAN
His actions are based in principle and concern for his people.
DEPA BILLIBA
The recent decrees by Chancellor Palpatine are indeed disturbing.
Ko-Okin, a new member of the Council speaks. Human and young, like Obi-Wan. He was seen briefly amongst the Jedi at M2799A. Actor of Nordic decent.
KO-OKIN
Perhaps our time as guardians of the Republic has ended.
A few extra glances at his surprising suggestion.
KO-OKIN
If good men such as Bail Organa feel that the Republic has gone too far perhaps we should examine whether we believe the same.
A few heartbeats of silence.
YODA
Disturbing is that suggestion. Reminiscent of Count Dooku it is.
OBI-WAN
Qui-Gon Jinn and many other Jedi have felt the same. Serving the Republic gave the Jedi legitimacy as more than vigilantes armed with magical powers and laser swords. However, it’s become a shield to eliminate even the perception that we crave power.
YODA
Not a shield. A check it is.
OBI-WAN
Perhaps. The fact remains that we have a choice to make of whether we wish to step off our secure moral pillar or continue to serve a government that may be beyond corruption.
KO-OKIN
We are in agreement that the Republic is slowly becoming repressive?
DEPA BILLIBA
(Scans the Council Members.)
I believe that is our conclusion.
OBI-WAN
Than we may best serve by helping to establish a safe-haven for dissenters now. If another round of wars are to be averted it’s very possible Alderaan may be the only place they can be stopped. If an alternative is allowed to exist than the Republic should, in time, correct itself.
ADI GALLIA
What do you propose?
OBI-WAN
We go to Alderaan with the remaining Jedi as peacekeepers. We enter the negotiations between Alderaan and the Chancellor and mediate a compromise.
DEAP BILLIBA
It is a reasonable solution.
Around the chamber many heads nod.
YODA
A reckless solution I believe it to be. The Dark Side continues to grow. Many dangers persist.
KO-OKIN
We are Jedi. We stand against the Dark. What choice do we have?
YODA
(Takes a look around at the rest of the chamber.)
Agreed upon the proposal is. To Alderaan the Jedi will go.
Yoda leaves his seat and walks out the door.
130. INT. CORUSCANT – JEDI TEMPLE – ANAKIN AND OBI-WAN’S QUARTERS – NIGHT
Obi-Wan walks into his quarters within the Jedi Temple. He begins the process of collecting what he’ll need for the trip to Alderaan.
Obi-Wan briefly glances into a second bedroom that has already been stripped. The sight brings him some sadness. Behind and to the left of him Qui-Gon Jinn softly materializes.
QUI-GON JINN
You’ve taught him all he needs to know.
Obi-Wan spins to face his old master. His lightsaber is in hand but not lit.
OBI-WAN
Qui-Gon?
QUI-GON
Yes, Obi-Wan.
Obi-Wan walks slowly to Qui-Gon and stops at a distance where he can study the apparition.
OBI-WAN
But how?
QUI-GON
An unexpected gift from Anakin. He sensed my passing and anchored my spirit between worlds.
OBI-WAN
Is that possible?
QUI-GON
He’s more powerful than even he can imagine.
OBI-WAN
Anakin never mentioned being visited by a ghost.
QUI-GON
That’s my failing. I wasn’t prepared to leave my body behind. I could only oversee your lives until I made a breakthrough trying to warn Anakin.
OBI-WAN
Trying?
QUI-GON
He never heard my call. He’s completely blocked me out.
OBI-WAN
I’d always wondered if he’d have listened to you any better than he did for me. Evidently not. Why did you need to warn him?
QUI-GON
Anakin was about to take his first step towards the Dark Side.
OBI-WAN
What? When was this? Where was I?
QUI-GON
Finding the source of darkness, on Geonosis.
OBI-WAN
(Thinks back.)
Geonosis?
(The memory snaps into place.)
Tatooine. His mother.
QUI-GON
(Nods.)
Shmi died in his arms. In despair he wielded his lightsaber with hatred in his heart.
OBI-WAN
I never knew. I don’t think I even asked if he’d stopped dreaming of his mother.
QUI-GON
You’ve always been focused on the larger picture Obi-wan, and those were truly crucial days.
OBI-WAN
The larger picture? The Chosen One took steps towards the Dark Side. Have you felt how powerful he’s become?
QUI-GON
He’s not lost. Horribly earned as it was, he was humbled and tempered that day.
OBI-WAN
I’m sure.
QUI-GON
Regardless, his destiny is upon him. You must step aside and allow him to face it.
OBI-WAN
Step aside?
QUI-GON
He’ll meet his final trial on Alderaan. He knows what is needed to defeat the Sith.
OBI-WAN
He’s already failed…he’s not ready to face this alone.
QUI-GON
You must trust him. You refused to once and he’s forgiven you. Refuse again and forgiveness may not be possible.
OBI-WAN
What?
QUI-GON
You forced him to choose between his love and the Jedi.
OBI-WAN
I had no choice.
QUI-GON
There’s always a choice. And the path you chose led to Anakin’s expulsion from the Order. He left his wife and his mother to serve the Order only to have them turn their backs on him despite all his sacrifices and bravery.
OBI-WAN
I should have lied to cover Anakin’s double life then?
QUI-GON
I’m not your judge Obi-Wan. But there is always more than one point-of-view.
OBI-WAN
(Thinks it over.)
You’ve been wrong before Master. You could be wrong now.
QUI-GON
Of course.
OBI-WAN
My instincts tell me I need to be at Alderaan.
QUI-GON
If your choice is made, I cannot interfere.
(Qui-Gon fades away and he speaks with a disembodied voice.)
Be careful old friend
Obi-Wan quietly contemplates what he’s just seen.
WIPE SCENE
131. EXT. SPACE – ABOVE ALDERAAN
The Republic Knight and the rest of the Republic Fleet orbit around Alderaan. A shuttle leaves the ship’s hanger and is joined by dozens of escorts.
132. INT. PALPATINE’S SHUTTLE
Anakin and Palpatine are alone. Through the viewport Alderaan rapidly expands as they descend.
PALPATINE
I wish you to have something. If you are to adequately protect me I will need you armed properly.
Palpatine produces the lightsaber Anakin will use throughout the Original Trilogy. Anakin takes the lightsaber and extends the red blade. The camera angles are reminiscent of Obi-Wan giving Luke his father’s lightsaber in A New Hope. Anakin manipulates the lightsaber through a few simple patterns to get a feeling of the grip.
ANAKIN
Someone powerful owned this. Where did it come from?
PALPATINE
It comes from my personal collection. Naboo was once the final battle zone in the Great Sith War. It was discovered there.
ANAKIN
(Closes lightsaber.)
It’s strange to hold one again. Not as a Jedi I mean.
PALPATINE
It will serve you well. I am certain.
(Looks out window.)
Now I must prepare.
Anakin looks out the window as well. Palpatine departs into the adjacent chamber.
The capital of Alderaan, Aldera, is becoming visible. A light snow falls on the city in a predawn light. Lacking in skyscrapers, Artique Palace is the largest building in the capital, and supporting many horse-like creatures being used for transportation on the cobblestone-like roads, the city is more akin to a Norman Rockwell painting than the capital city of one of the most important planets in the galaxy, though upon closer inspection it contains all the modern Star Wars amenities including a bustling spaceport and droids milling about.
Suddenly appearing is Amidala’s personal ship. Anakin recognizes the ship and follows it down with his eyes. It lands near the palace.
133. EXT. ALDERAAN – REPUBLIC BASE – DAY
Palpatine’s shuttle lands near a temporary military building that looks very distinct from the city. The building is directly in front of a white mountain chain. One tower in the back is built onto the steep down slope of a mountain. A light piece of the Imperial March plays in the background.
WIPE SCENE
134. EXT. ALDERAAN – ALDERA – ARTIQUE PALACE – DUSK
Artique Palace is set only slightly apart from the rest of the city. It isn’t large enough to tower above the rest of the populace but it is an impressive sight. It’s lightly painted and inviting, with huge stained-glass windows and a handful of pointed towers.
135. INT. ALDERAAN – ALDERA – ARTIQUE PALACE – BAIL ORGANA’S OFFICE CHAMBERS – DUSK
Yoda, Obi-Wan, Ko-Okin, several dignitaries, and Bail Organa are in Organa’s office chambers. It is near a clear window overlooking the city. Glare from the city’s windows lets it be known that the sun is setting on the other side of the palace. Palpatine’s temporary building is visible, along with the remains of the Republic Army. Alderaan’s Defense Force is positioned between them and the city.
BAIL ORGANA
(Looking out the window.)
The situation is deteriorating faster than I imagined it would.
KO-OKIN
Excuse me majesty, but we haven’t even started.
BAIL ORGANA
Look out there. Palpatine has put Aldera under siege using a flag of truce. I was willing to meet him aboard his flagship but he insisted on giving me the honor of hosting him on my own soil for these talks. His act of goodwill has landed an invasion force barely two kilometers from the outskirts of the city.
OBI-WAN
Perhaps it is only an honor guard as he says. Palpatine did survive an assassination attempt just before he left Coruscant.
BAIL ORGANA
Diplomacy dictates I must accept that answer as well. But I’m still forced to take all actions to limit my people’s danger.
PADMÉ
(From off camera.)
A dangerous gambit on the Chancellor’s part.
Padmé enters the room seated in a self-propelled chair. She’s no longer pregnant and is wearing her public clothes. She is followed by See-Threepio. Obi-Wan leaves his place amongst the Jedi and leans in to speak with her.
OBI-WAN
(Softly.)
Are you all right m’lady?
Padmé pulls back slightly from Obi-Wan’s attempt to take her hand.
PADMÉ
Yes, Master Kenobi. They’re both doing fine. I’m merely abstaining from physical exertion.
OBI-WAN
Both?
BAIL ORGANA
Senator Amidala.
PADMÉ
(Nods her head in place of a bow.)
Majesty. Queen Jamillia sends her regards.
BAIL ORGANA
Thank-you for coming. We need strong supporters and there are few Chancellor Palpatine holds in higher regard than you.
PADMÉ
We shall see. The time was not long ago when he appeared to hold you in a similar light.
KO-OKIN
Will you be participating in the talks tomorrow?
PADMÉ
Yes.
KO-OKIN
Then we Jedi must take our leave for the duration of this meeting. Master Kenobi and Yoda will serve the Jedi during tomorrow’s talks.
The members of the Jedi leave the room. Yoda is noted by his silence throughout the meeting.
136. INT. ALDERAAN – ALDERA – ARTIQUE PALACE – HALLWAY – DUSK
The palace features woodcarvings for many of its decorations and has a slightly medieval feel, though the lighting is bright enough that it’s not completely apparent.
Yoda mounts his hover chair. Obi-Wan waits for him. They begin moving together through the hallway.
OBI-WAN
You were silent in there.
YODA
Still concerned am I.
OBI-WAN
We’re all concerned. Breaking from the Republic, even temporarily, is a bold step.
YODA
(Scoffs.)
Bold. A description I share not. Risk much we do.
OBI-WAN
Shortly before his death Master Windu spoke to me of renewal out of destruction.
YODA
(Turns on Obi-Wan.)
And too old, am I, for change?
OBI-WAN
I didn’t say that master.
YODA
No. Say that you would dare not. Friend enough, only Master Windu was.
Yoda continues along his way.
OBI-WAN
Forgive me Master. But if you felt this strongly you had the influence to stop the Council’s decision.
YODA
(Stops again and sighs.)
A confession I have. Entrusted with training the youngest Padawan I am. Only the most wise in the Order may train the younglings. Easy it is to fall prey to the Dark Side when children you have raised are placed in danger.
(Pauses.)
Fear I now feel for my students. Fear in my final years, that witnessing I am the Jedi Order and Republic crumbling. Lost in the struggle may be my students.
(Pauses.)
Know I do not that you are incorrect. Trust myself completely in this matter, I cannot. Though feel I have, our every decision has served the purposes of our true enemy.
OBI-WAN
Indecision won’t help.
YODA
Certainty has led to disaster. Almost powerless we have become, as the Dark Side grows invincible.
WIPE SCENE
137. EXT. ALDERAAN – PALPATINE’S TOWER – DUSK
Palpatine’s Tower is at the Republic Army’s base of operations. It’s a large tower connected to the lower levels by an inclined catwalk. The tower is built on the down slope of the mountain at quite a height. The incline to this mountain is also quite steep at the point where the tower is built.
With the sun nearly set half the horizon is orange as the other half is darkness.
138. INT. ALDERAAN – PALPATINE’S TOWER – HALLWAY
The darkened hallway leads to only one door. Anakin approaches two guards stationed at Palpatine’s door.
GUARD
The Chancellor is meditating and wishes not to be disturbed.
ANAKIN
(A little surprised that Palpatine meditates.)
That’s okay. I can wait for him.
139. INT. ALDERAAN – PALPATINE – PALPATINE’S CHAMBERS
Anakin walks into the antechamber of Palpatine’s private chambers passing the two guards. The door into the office is open. As Anakin peers within, Palpatine sits in meditation with his back turned. Anakin begins to pull his head back to give Palpatine some privacy when he notices blue electricity crackling from his hands and traveling up his arms. Anakin exhibits some surprise and a hint of embarrassment, but after a moment begins walking towards Palpatine, this time in a combat crouch, hand near his lightsaber, and remaining silent. Before Anakin can get even halfway there a hologram of Republic General Phled materializes before Palpatine.
GENERAL PHLED
Your Excellency. We are in position and can pacify the dissidents at any time.
PALPATINE
And the Jedi Temple?
GENERAL PHLED
Being targeted from orbit.
PALPATINE
Very good general. Don’t fire unless you receive the order from myself, are fired upon, or learn of another attempt on my life.
Anakin stops where he is.
GENERAL PHLED
It shall be as you order Excellency. Any treachery on their part and they will all die.
The general bows as his hologram disappears. Palpatine does not move his head, but his eyes look as far to the right as possible. Anakin retreats back into the antechamber. He walks towards the guards and waves his hand wiping their memories of him.
140. INT. ALDERAAN – PALPATINE’S TOWER – HALLWAY
When out of view of anyone Anakin leans on a doorway feeling foolish and at a loss of what to do.
WIPE SCENE
141. EXT. ALDERAAN – ALDERA – ARTIQUE PALACE – NIGHT
A light snow continues to fall in the softly lit city.
142. INT. ALDERAAN – ALDERA – ARTIQUE PALACE – NURSERY
Obi-Wan is playing with the infant Leia, identifiable by her pink cap, by floating colorful toys above her head. The nursery is semi-busy with slowly changing colors on the wall. Many intelligent toys litter the ground. One tugs at the bottom of Obi-Wan’s robe for attention.
OBI-WAN
Would you like me to teach you this some day?
(He tickles Leia.)
You’ll make a fine apprentice.
PADMÉ
Rather presumptuous don’t you think?
Obi-Wan turns to see Padmé standing at the doorway. He’s surprised to see her there.
OBI-WAN
Lady Amidala.
PADMÉ
It’s not the most flattering trait you Jedi have.
OBI-WAN
You surprised me. I didn’t sense you approach.
Takes Leia away from Obi-Wan and begins to bottle nurse her.
PADMÉ
I’ve practiced on Anakin. I wanted to see him when he thought he was alone. It’s difficult to really know someone if you’ve never seen them in a completely unguarded moment.
OBI-WAN
Indeed.
(Pauses. To clear his mind.)
I apologize. Anakin’s made himself clear on this.
PADMÉ
How is he?
OBI-WAN
Anakin? I don’t know.
(Half closes his eyes in concentration.)
I can feel his presence, but he’s closed himself off.
PADMÉ
He’s here?
OBI-WAN
(Nods.)
Somehow Palpatine recruited him as his Security Head. He was at the assassination attempt.
Padmé’s mood brightens at the news that Anakin is on Alderaan and that she’ll see him the next day.
PADMÉ
(Smiles.)
Good.
OBI-WAN
(Nods.)
It works out. If he’s going to raise a Force adept I’ll need to speak to him anyway.
PADMÉ
(Thinking that Obi-Wan had misunderstood her hesitancy.)
I didn’t mean-. I only meant I need time. It’s a big decision.
Obi-Wan regards her, a bit perplexed.
OBI-WAN
Excuse me?
PADMÉ
Sending my children away.
OBI-WAN
Children? Amidala, attachment is forbidden. The Jedi can’t accept siblings any more than parents. No matter your decision, you’ll have at least one child.
Padmé is in a small state of shock that part of the decision has been lifted from her shoulders.
PADMÉ
I didn’t know.
OBI-WAN
I’m sorry. It is a rare situation. Anakin will be thrilled. He has no idea.
PADMÉ
We didn’t have much time before he had to leave…
Padmé stares out as she begins to cry a little. In her arms Leia fusses a little. Obi-Wan kneels before Padmé.
OBI-WAN
Are you okay Padmé?
PADMÉ
(Closes eyes.)
I’m sorry.
OBI-WAN
No I’m sorry. I’m not good at this. The only adept Qui-Gon found was Anakin. And I was on the ship protecting you then…I thought.
PADMÉ
I remember. Shmi loved him so much. She was so brave.
(Sniffles.)
I wish Anakin could have seen her free and happy with the Larses.
OBI-WAN
Who?
PADMÉ
Shmi’s family. Do you have any regrets?
Obi-Wan considers before answering truthfully.
OBI-WAN
Some. We’re a society of orphans, after all. But I’ll always be thankful, wherever they are. Whoever they are.
PADMÉ
Why Leia? Is she stronger?
OBI-WAN
No. Both their midichlorian counts are exceptional. But we sense more of you in her.
PADMÉ
Me?
OBI-WAN
Your sense of duty, courage, compassion. Both may become willful, but I’m not sure which of you that’s from. It’s only a shadow of her potential, but she’s the more suitable candidate.
Suspecting that they’ve reached an impasse and not wanting to push, Obi-Wan stands up.
OBI-WAN
Try to get some rest. You’ll need your strength in the morning.
Obi-Wan starts to walk away.
PADMÉ
(Looking down at Leia.)
You’ll look after her?
Obi-Wan turns back.
OBI-WAN
Ask and I’ll take her as my Padawan.
Not looking up Padmé nods. Finally she does look up and begins to hand Leia to Obi-Wan. Obi-Wan places a hand on her shoulder.
OBI-WAN
No hurry. Take your time. We’ll do this in the morning.
143. EXT. ALDERAAN – ALDERAAN DEFENSE FORCE BASE – NIGHT
Yoda walks along a wall amongst the Alderaan Defense Force troops. The regulars wear armor that is similar to the armor worn by the Rebel Soldiers in the opening scenes of A New Hope. Amongst the group are soldiers sent to the Alderaan cause by their local governments, including a group of wookies. The light snow continues.
Yoda stares out across the gap to the much better regimented Republic Army standing in the open. Bail Organa, dressed in his admiral’s uniform again, and General Armande walk up behind the Jedi.
Fifty meters away a disruption occurs. A lightsaber extends followed by two shots that are deflected into the sky. Several more shouts are heard until the sounds die away. Across the way clone troopers level weapons at the source of the disruption.
YODA
(Without turning.)
Strong is the Dark Side here.
BAIL ORGANA
They’ve been doing that all day.
GENERAL ARMANDE
Internal security is doing all it can, but without the Jedi the shooting would
have already started.
YODA
(Turns to face Bail Organa.)
And the clone troopers?
BAIL ORGANA
Perfectly disciplined as always. They don’t even require Jedi peacekeepers.
YODA
Disturbing this is. Senator Organa, control your people you must.
BAIL ORGANA
We’re doing our best. Our forces have similar numbers. But I’ve seen, firsthand, what those clone troopers are capable of. I’m not interested in starting a shooting war tonight.
YODA
Yes. Very dangerous, are they. More dangerous, perhaps, is the threat we cannot see.
To his right Yoda hears a commotion. Another soldier is causing a disruption near a Jedi Knight. The Jedi Force Pushes a soldier who was again going to attack a distant clone trooper. The soldier’s weapon flies away.
144. INT. ALDERAAN – PLANATARY DEFENSE SHIELD – HALLWAY
The building is claustrophobic and dark. Exposed pipes and wiring are prevalent. A few people are around, but traffic is generally light.
One of Jango Fett’s clones passes two officers. The clone’s hand appears to be gripping something but nothing can be seen there. The two officers disappear into a room that is only briefly seen, but is unmistakably the main control room.
Nervously the undisguised clone trooper looks around to make sure he is alone. Seeing no one around to disturb him, he kneels down and places an invisible box on the floor. He seems to press a button on the side and the box de-cloaks becoming visible. He opens the box and pulls out a strange looking device. It has a handle and trigger below a boxlike head. The clone places the device against the wall and presses a button. A muffled sound is emitted. When he pulls the device back there is a ten by eight centimeter hole in the wall.
Next the clone trooper places the thermal detonators within. He disguises each hole with its own hologram before moving on to the next. After doing this four times he re-cloaks the box and leaves the area just before another two officers pass by.
WIPE SCENE
145. ALDERAAN – PALPATINE’S TOWER – ANAKIN’S QUARTERS
Anakin spars intensely with five remotes. They shoot blasts at him in quick succession as he moves in an erratic circle to fend them off. His arm is again mechanical. Palpatine enters the room.
PALPATINE
I see you’re making use of your gift.
Anakin waves away the remotes. He leaves his lightsaber extended as Palpatine nears him before reluctantly extinguishing it.
ANAKIN
Chancellor. Yes thank-you again. It’s well crafted. It feels like it belongs.
PALPATINE
I was speaking of your other gift. Truly remarkable to behold. Tell me; is it your intention to allow the Order to suppress your talent?
ANAKIN
Nothing is certain. Perhaps, in time, the Jedi will permit me to return to the Order.
PALPATINE
Is that your wish?
ANAKIN
No. I suppose it’s not.
PALPATINE
I thought not. However, I don’t see the Hero of Almania wasting away on Naboo forever.
ANAKIN
The Jedi believe I was born to fulfill a prophecy. That hasn’t changed.
PALPATINE
Perhaps your destiny is to find a new philosophy.
ANAKIN
Beyond the Jedi?
PALPATINE
Certainly. Not every Force user has followed the Jedi’s interpretation. Imagine what you could become, free to explore the limits of your potential without the shackles of the Jedi holding you back. Did Master Kenobi teach you of the different philosophies of Force?
ANAKIN
I learned of the history of the Sith and such.
PALPATINE
So you have learned the simple history of one opposing view. Have you not learned of the philosophy of the Keiran? The Nall?
ANAKIN
No.
PALPATINE
A shame. Those philosophies stretch to a time before the Jedi. History of the Force is a hobby of mine. I must confess my interest in you is somewhat born out of a desire to be in the periphery of that history.
(Walks to a terminal.)
Allow me to share my research.
Palpatine hands Anakin a datacube. Anakin inserts the cube into a data reader.
ANAKIN
This includes the teachings of the Sith.
PALPATINE
You have no idea how difficult it was to uncover those secrets. The Jedi claim to resist fear, but destroy all evidence of what they do not agree with. The Sith have their own point-of-view as well Anakin. Why should the Jedi fear the beliefs of their enemies? Perhaps you should study them before dismissing all. Even failed philosophies often uncover interesting insights that other, more accepted, philosophies would be blind to. You will read them of course?
ANAKIN
(Putting the data reader down.)
Yes. I’ll study them later.
PALPATINE
Now, as to my reason for disturbing you. Is security in place for the meeting tomorrow?
ANAKIN
Yes Chancellor. I don’t believe anything will disturb the talks. But, with your permission, I’d like to be allowed to remain within the room.
PALPATINE
An acceptable intrusion. I’ll leave you to your practice then. Goodnight. Tomorrow should be an interesting day.
Anakin watches Palpatine leave. At first it appears that he’ll ignore the information Palpatine has given to him and go back to his exercises. But his curiosity gets the best of him and he sits down to read it.
WIPE SCENE
146. EXT. ALDERAAN – PALPATINE’S TOWER – DAWN
Behind Palpatine’s Tower the two armies come into focus.
147. EXT. ALDERAAN – ALDERA – ARTIQUE PALACE – DAWN
In front of the Artique Palace two transports arrive.
148. INT. ALDERAAN – ALDERA – ARTIQUE PALACE – PADMÉ’S ROOM
Padmé finishes getting dressed with the help of Dormé. Threepio is also in the room. She looks at herself in the mirror and goes to the door.
Obi-Wan greets her. Padmé’s surprised to see him and averts her eyes, but only momentarily. She’s made the decision to face this bravely.
PADMÉ
Obi-Wan. It’s time isn’t it?
OBI-WAN
Yes. The Order will assume guardianship when the negotiations end today. Senator Organa will be
here in moments.
Padmé goes to Leia’s crib and puts the infant’s head to her own and is nearly brought to tears.
PADMÉ
Remember me.
Bail Organa and Yoda walk in just as Padmé is putting Leia back.
BAIL ORGANA
(Sensing that he’s walked in on a private moment.)
Ambassador. Are we prepared.
PADMÉ
I think so.
(Motions the squirming twins.)
Will they be safe?
BAIL ORGANA
They’ll be placed with the Royal Family’s children. I assure you, there’s absolutely no safer place on the planet.
PADMÉ
I never knew you had children.
TIAN ORGANA
(From off screen.)
Only nieces and nephews unfortunately.
Tian Organa appears through the door.
BAIL ORGANA
Ambassador Amidala please let me introduce you to my wife Lady Tian Organa she’ll oversee the protection of your children.
PADMÉ
Greetings Lady Organa.
TIAN ORGANA
(Bows slightly.)
A pleasure. I had been hoping to meet you.
Tian Organa walks to the sleeping babies and smiles. She spends more time with baby Leia.
TIAN ORGANA
Such beautiful children. They’ll be safe in my care.
PADMÉ
Thank-you.
YODA
Waiting for us the Supreme Chancellor is. Delay more we should not.
PADMÉ
You’re right. Majesty, lead the way.
Bail Organa leads Yoda, Padmé, Obi-Wan out of the room. On her way out Padmé turns her head for one last look at the twins. She blocks Obi-Wan’s path and he looks back as well before they both leave the room.
149. EXT. ALDERAAN – PALPATINE’S TOWER – DAY
The Jedi walk ahead of Bail Organa and Padmé on the catwalk leading to the top of Palpatine’s tower. The wind catches their clothes as they fight the cold.
150. INT. ALDERAAN – PALPATINE’S TOWER – DAY
Many large windows allow beautiful a vista of the mountains, Aldera, and the two armies below.
Inside only Palpatine and Anakin are present. Anakin is now dressed completely in a black military uniform. Artoo Detoo rolls to Yoda and Obi-Wan. A sensor package is extended and Artoo beeps. Anakin walks to Yoda and Obi-Wan.
ANAKIN
(Indicating the lightsaber in Obi-Wan’s robes.)
I’m afraid I’ll need to take those.
Obi-Wan and Yoda exchange a look.
PALPATINE
That won’t be necessary. A Jedi’s lightsaber is his life. I would never dream stripping them of such an essential part of their identity. I have nothing to fear from them.
Bail Organa and Padmé and Padmé step in. Anakin stares at Padmé but does not speak. Bail Organa relinquishes his blaster wordlessly to Anakin who, in turn, places it in one of Artoo’s compartments.
BAIL ORGANA
Greetings Chancellor.
PALPATINE
Greetings to you my old friend. Please have a seat. We have much to discuss.
BAIL ORGANA
Indeed we do. My government met this morning. They passed this resolution.
(Hands Palpatine a data reader.)
As of this moment Alderaan is an independent world. We’ll need to establish new-
PALPATINE
(Hands back the data reader.)
I’m sorry, but I simply cannot accept this.
BAIL ORGANA
That’s not your decision.
PALPATINE
I’m afraid it is. You forget I’m sworn to protect this Republic. Another Separatist conflict is out of the question. This treason will be suppressed with force if necessary.
YODA
Ease you should your language Chancellor. Wish to escalate the situation you do not.
PALPATINE
On the contrary. I believe that a blunt response is most definitely in order. I still wish to resolve this dispute as peacefully as possible, of course. However, this planet’s leadership will not be allowed to restart the greatest conflict seen in a thousand years because of an overreaction to measures put in place to keep the galaxy from falling into chaos. I am afraid these are dark days and I do not have the luxury of permitting Alderaan its petty dispute. What do you think Lady Amidala? I’ve always trusted your judgment above all others.
(Makes a very subtle wave of his hand.)
You do agree with me?
PADMÉ
(Slightly dazed.)
I agree.
Bail Organa doesn’t believe her. Obi-Wan and Yoda exchange confused looks. Anakin, standing behind Palpatine, looks on with intense interest.
PALPATINE
There. A reasonable answer.
Bail Organa stops staring at Padmé with a betrayed look and is speechless for a few moments as he pulls himself together.
BAIL ORGANA
We don’t wish conflict with the Republic. Only our independence.
PALPATINE
Impossible. In fact I must insist that this declaration be nullified immediately or I will order my troops to occupy Aldera and take into custody the members of your world’s government.
OBI-WAN
(Mildly outraged.)
Chancellor. I must insist that you stop making threats before Alderaan can even begin negotiations.
Yoda attempts to get Obi-Wan’s attention.
PALPATINE
Need I remind you, Master Kenobi, that several instances have been reported of Alderaan soldiers attempting to attack Republic positions? No. Another rogue government is out of the question. If there are to be negotiations at this moment then they will be under the subject of sanctions against Alderaan for its actions and the timetable in which it will be allowed a new seat within the Republic Senate.
BAIL ORGANA
(Rises to his feet in anger.)
The people of the galaxy will never-
Anakin uses Bail Organa’s aggressiveness as an excuse to place himself between him and Palpatine.
ANAKIN
(Waving his hand and projecting all of his will into his voice.)
Stop.
(In a more reasoning quieter voice.)
You don’t want to pick a fight.
BAIL ORGANA
…don’t want to fight.
Both Obi-Wan and Yoda pick up on the second Force Command. They assume that Anakin was also responsible for the first one used on Padmé.
PALPATINE
Declare your fealty or pay the price.
ANAKIN
Senator.
OBI-WAN
(Hand on his lightsaber hilt.)
Anakin. Stand away from him.
Anakin slowly does as ordered.
OBI-WAN
Come with me Senator. We’re leaving.
Obi-Wan regards Anakin strangely as he collects Bail Organa and Padmé and prepares to leave.
PALPATINE
No one is leaving. Alderaan’s treason will be addressed here or on the battlefield.
Obi-Wan turns back to Palpatine and begins walking purposefully back to Palpatine, lightsaber extending as he approaches.
Suddenly Obi-Wan flies backwards from an invisible push. The force of the blow knocks him straight into Yoda. As Obi-Wan lands on him, Yoda’s head cracks with a hollow sound against the floor.
Anakin is in a stance that makes it clear he delivered the blow.
ANAKIN
No aggressive negotiations today master.
Obi-Wan picks himself off of Yoda and checks the Jedi Master. Yoda is unconscious but clearly still breathing. On his knees, Obi-Wan turns and regards Anakin as his enemy.
OBI-WAN
You serve this monster?
Anakin looks at Palpatine out of the corner of his eye. Palpatine is watching with a malevolent intensity.
ANAKIN
Yes. You would as well if you knew the Chancellor as I do.
Obi-Wan stands, lightsaber still activated. Anakin extends his lightsaber and gets into a fighting pose.
OBI-WAN
What’s happened to you Anakin?
ANAKIN
I’ve accepted my destiny. If you strike now, you will die.
OBI-WAN
(His eyes and voice becoming ice.)
You’re welcome to try.
Obi-Wan swings at Anakin and the blow is parried. At first the pacing of the fight is a little slower than in other Prequels duels. Both opponents feel each other out. Neither fighter moves more than a few steps from their starting positions as short flurries of blows are exchanged. Anakin is at the height of his powers. He’s completely focused on destroying his former master.
Soon Anakin begins fighting in earnest, pushing Obi-Wan past the kneeling Bail Organa and Padmé and out the door.
151. EXT. ALDERAAN – PALPATINE’S TOWER – CATWALK – DAY
Anakin continues to dominate Obi-Wan as they appear on the breezy catwalk. Obi-Wan recovers and pushes back a little. Obi-Wan lands a strong blow that knocks Anakin’s lightsaber outwards leaving him open. For a moment it seems as though he might succeed in defeating Anakin. However, the opening is fleeting and Anakin recovers enough to avoid the finishing blow.
Obi-Wan now has his back to the tower. They are not out of hearing range of Palpatine. Obi-Wan is sweating heavily and beginning to lose his wind.
OBI-WAN
I don’t know what’s going through your mind Anakin. But this isn’t the way.
ANAKIN
You’re wrong. It’s the only way.
The two start fighting again.
From the doorway Padmé is seen shaking her head in recovery. She gets to her knee and grips the guardrail.
Obi-Wan fends off a particularly violent combination but loses his balance and finds the tip of Anakin’s lightsaber near his throat.
ANAKIN
You are beaten. Resist and you will be destroyed.
PADMÉ
Ani!
OBI-WAN
(Eyes go as far to his periphery as possible.)
You’d sacrifice anyone to save Palpatine?
Anakin assumes that Obi-Wan is talking about himself. He maintains a steeled expression.
ANAKIN
I’ll do what I must.
OBI-WAN
So will I.
Obi-Wan Force Pushes Anakin’s lightsaber arm upwards giving him just enough time to stop the next blow from decapitating him.
Obi-Wan turns and runs a few steps away from Anakin. He then flings his lightsaber at the kneeling Padmé.
ANAKIN
No!
As Anakin runs past Obi-Wan towards his wife, Obi-Wan Force Pushes Anakin, sending him off balance and over the railing back first. Obi-Wan recalls his lightsaber back to his hand and extinguishes it as he watches Anakin fall.
Padmé screams.
152. EXT. ALDERAAN – ROCKFACE – DAY
From a distance Anakin’s fall is seen. He savagely impacts against the rocky mountain twice. He hits the foot of the mountain with great impact and rolls down the remaining distance coming to a rest at the bottom. He’s unconscious, his right arm is broken off, and his body is visibly broken as blood falls from a nasty wound on his head.
153. EXT. ALERAAN – PALPATINE’S TOWER – CATWALK – DAY
Obi-Wan stands with the noble sadness and wisdom of a marble statue depicting a beloved leader who took his people through hell. The wind wraps him as Padmé screams and cries in the background.
As Obi-Wan returns to the tower Padmé starts hitting him ineffectively.
OBI-WAN
I’m sorry. He wasn’t the same man.
Padmé keeps hitting him.
PADMÉ
How could you?
OBI-WAN
(Putting a hand on Padmé’s shoulder.)
Relax. It’s almost over.
Padmé unnaturally crumbles into Obi-Wan’s arms.
154. INT. ALDERAAN – PALPATINE’S TOWER – DAY
Obi-Wan hands the groggy Padmé to Bail Organa.
Yoda wakes up slowly but does not get up.
Palpatine waits patiently as Obi-Wan approaches.
OBI-WAN
(Holding out his hand and clearly giving a Force Command in his strongest voice.)
You will order your men to withdraw from this planet immediately.
PALPATINE
Very well.
Palpatine goes to a com on his desk but is clearly not under the control of Obi-Wan.
PALPATINE
Commander, execute the contingency.
155. INT. ALDERAAN – ALDERAAN DEFENSE FORCE BASE – FORWARD COMMAND POST – DAY
General Armande stares out across the field through binoculars. Several officers surround him.
The base is built into the ground.
156. EXT. ALDERAAN – REPUBLIC BASE – DAY (THROUGH ARMANDE’S BINOCULARS)
As Armande scans the base he notices some weapons coming to life.
157. INT. ALDERAAN – ALDERAAN DEFENSE FORCE BASE – FORWARD COMMAND POST – DAY
GENERAL ARMANDE
What the…
158. EXT. ALDERAAN – REPUBLIC BASE – DAY (THROUGH ARMANDE’S BINOCULARS)
General Armande focuses on a gun emplacement that has just turned red and sees it fire.
159. EXT. ALDERAAN – ALDERAAN DEFENSE FORCE BASE – DAY
A group of soldiers and two Jedi Knights are destroyed in the first blast of the battle.
160. INT. ALDERAAN – ALDERAAN DEFENSE FORCE BASE – FORWARD COMMAND POST – DAY
The command post goes into a flurry of motion.
GENERAL ARMANDE
Return fire!
161. EXT. ALDERAAN – REPUBLIC BASE – DAY
The Republic troops storm onto the battlefield and begin advancing under heavy fire. They take many casualties.
162. INT. ALDERAAN – PALPATINE’S TOWER – DAY
Through the window Obi-Wan sees the great battle taking place a few kilometers away. He extends his lightsaber to threaten Palpatine.
OBI-WAN
Stop this now or you will be one of the casualties.
Palpatine calmly looks down at the blade he’s being threatened with, then back up to Obi-Wan.
PALPATINE
I think not. I’m not sure who you thought you were dealing with.
(His face takes on a sinister sneer and his voice changes just slightly.)
But it is time you found out.
Obi-Wan is shocked as Palpatine raises both hands and shoots lightening directly at his chest. Obi-Wan manages to partially block the blast with his lightsaber. He staggers backwards, but maintains the balance to stay on his feet. His chest lightly smokes.
Beside Obi-Wan, Yoda stands and takes out his lightsaber.
YODA
Darth Sidious.
PALPATINE
Pathetic fools. Slaves to your impotent Light.
YODA
Understand little you do. Embracing servants are we.
From his robes Palpatine produces a lightsaber of his own.
PALPATINE
Then come. Allow it to embrace you forever.
Obi-Wan and Yoda attack as one. Palpatine fights with his lightsaber in his right hand and a steady stream of Force Lightening emanating from the other. The glass of the tower is blown out by the Force Lightening during the fight.
163. EXT. ALDERAAN – BATTLEFIELD – DAY
The two forces have met. Clone troopers on speeder bikes throw grenades into the bunkers the Alderaan troops are fighting from.
164. EXT. ALDERAAN – BATTLEFIELD – DAY
Jedi stand in front of the Alderaan forces covering them from small arms fire as they shoot back at the approaching Republic army.
165. EXT. ALDERAAN – BATTLEFIELD – DAY
The group of wookies, including one recognizable as Chewbacca, do battle. As a clone trooper on a speeder bike passes too close, Chewbacca grabs him off the bike.
166. EXT. ALDERAAN – BATTLEFIELD – DAY
The clone troopers continue taking casualties at a fast pace, though they keep trying to move forward.
167. INT. ALDERAAN – REPUBLIC BASE – REPUBLIC COMMAND POST – DAY
In a sterile white room General Phled commands the battle. Many of the clone troopers around him quietly go about their business. One might almost be surprised a battle is going on outside.
CLONE TROOPER
Sir, the advance has stalled.
GENERAL PHLED
Have the rebels committed their full reserves?
CLONE TROOPER
Yes sir, all known Alderaanian forces are currently engaged.
GENERAL PHLED
Very well, begin phase two.
168. EXT. ALDERAAN – REPUBLIC FRONT LINES – DAY
Several clone troopers have managed to get themselves behind a snow bank they are using for cover.
The lead clone trooper appears to be listening to something.
CLONE TROOPER
Retreat!
Most clone troopers leave without a second word. Some stay for a moment to lay down covering fire before following their companions out of the killing zone.
169. INT. ALDERAAN – ALDERAAN DEFENSE FORCE BASE – FORWARD COMMAND POST – DAY
TACTICAL OFFICER
Sir, the Republic troops appear to be withdrawing.
GENERAL ARMANDE
You’re kidding.
(Stands behind the tactical officer and scowls.)
What’re they doing?
170. EXT. ALDERAAN – BATTLEFIELD – DAY
The Alderaan Defense Force cheers as the Republic Army visibly pulls back.
171. INT. ALDERAAN – PALPATINE’S TOWER – DAY
The fighting continues. A bolt of the lightening catches Obi-Wan in the left shoulder. A burn mark can now be seen on his clothes there. Yoda steps back from Palpatine to allow his partner a chance to recover.
PALPATINE
Finally I have an opportunity to see the great Master Kenobi’s power in person.
Obi-Wan recovers and resumes the fight. Even as he fights off two of the greatest warriors in the galaxy Palapatine is able to continue taunting Obi-Wan.
PALPATINE
Tell me Kenobi. How could you defeat my apprentice Maul with your master dying on the floor meters away?
Obi-Wan ignores the taunting.
PALPATINE
A great rage must have accompanied watching the end of that lightsaber impale your friend. Is that how you defeated my talented apprentice?
OBI-WAN
(Visibly trying to contain his emotions.)
Maul died because he was an arrogant fool.
PALPATINE
Or perhaps he died to so that a more worthy apprentice should come to my attention. Tell me Kenobi, did you enjoy the feeling of that dark energy?
OBI-WAN
(Is distracted as he channels away the anger that comes with Palpatine’s taunts.)
I’ll never join you.
PALPATINE
(Smiles.)
I wasn’t offering.
Palpatine blocks a lightsaber blow by Kenobi and hits him in the open chest with a bolt of Force Lightening. As Obi-Wan flies back, and Palpatine’s lightsaber concentrates on Yoda, Palpatine uses the Force to rip Obi-Wan’s lightsaber out of his hands and send it at the kneeling Padmé. She’s impaled by the weapon on the right side of her upper abdomen. The laws of gravity force the lightsaber to the ground cutting a few more inches into her side as it falls to the floor and rolls a meter and half away.
Padmé lets out an abbreviated scream as her hand goes to her wound. She lies down near the still open lightsaber. Bail Organa rushes to her side.
172. INT. ALDERAAN – PLANATARY DEFENSE SHIELD
The holograms hiding the four thermal detonators flicker off.
A passerby notices them and begins to reach out to see what’s hiding within.
The bombs explode with a great thunder. Fire engulfs the immediate area.
173. EXT. ALDERAAN – PLANATARY DEFENSE SHIELD – DAY
The planetary defense shield explodes. The building looks similar to the one destroyed in The Empire Strikes Back, except a little larger and painted in a light peach.
174. INT. ALDERAAN – ALDERAAN DEFENSE FORCE BASE – FORWARD COMMAND POST – DAY
The concussion rocks the command post. General Armande looks up from the report he’s been studying.
GENERAL ARMANDE
What was that?
TACTICAL OFFICER
The planetary shield generator sir.
General Armande is shocked by this revelation.
175. INT. ALDERAAN – PALPATINE’S TOWER – DAY
Bail Organa is at Padmé’s side. Yoda fights Palpatine alone in the background as Obi-Wan has difficulty breathing after the Force Lightening blast he’s taken. His chest is smoking.
The smoke from the shield generator explosion catches Bail Organa’s eye. He gets to the window and stares out.
BAIL ORGANA
(Breathless.)
Prophets protect my people.
176. INT. ALDERAAN – REPUBLIC BASE – REPUBLIC COMMAND POST – DAY
GENERAL PHLED
(Smiles wickedly.)
Commence planetary bombardment.
177. EXT. SPACE – ABOVE ALDERAAN
The orbiting fleet of prototype Star Destroyers maneuver around each other.
178. INT. REPUBLIC KNIGHT – GUN EMPLACEMENT
A solitary soldier lines up a shot at the planet beneath him.
179. EXT. SPACE – ABOVE ALDERAAN
Almost at once all gun batteries on the underside of the Star Destroyers light up and begin pounding the surface.
180. EXT. ALDERAAN – ALDERAAN DEFENSE FORCE BASE – DAY
The Alderaan Defense Force is in the process of being annihilated. The huge turbolaser blasts shake the ground and incinerate anybody that is near to it.
Ko-Okin flies backwards from a blast that hit twenty meters away.
181. INT. ALDERAAN – ALDERAAN DEFENSE FORCE BASE – FORWARD COMMAND POST – DAY
GENERAL ARMANTE
Abandon your positions, they’ll target us any-
There’s an explosion in the hallway. Fire comes through the open door.
182. EXT. ALDERAAN – ALDERAAN DEFENSE FORCE BASE – FORWARD COMMAND POST – DAY
The forward command post explodes.
183. INT. REPUBLIC KNIGHT – GUN EMPLACEMENT
From space the devastation to the surface continues. The shots from this emplacement and other shots from the fleet converge like a cone onto a single spot on the close planet. The gunner coldly continues firing.
184. INT. CORUSCANT – JEDI TEMPLE – LIBRARY
Madame Jocasta Nu aids several young Force adepts in their studies. Suddenly some of the older children begin looking around.
One younger child begins crying.
185. EXT. SPACE – ABOVE CORUSCANT
A prototype Star Destroyer fires three blasts into the ground.
186. EXT. CORUSCANT – THE JEDI TEMPLE – DAY
In quick succession the three turbo blasts hit the temple. The first goes straight through the spire that held the Jedi Council and continues through the right hand of the building. The second hits the back left and collapses that side of the building, causing a fireball that travels all the way through to the hole caused in the first blast. The third goes straight through the middle causing fire to belch out from all openings and the building to collapse in upon itself.
187. INT. ALDERAAN – PALPATINE’S TOWER – DAY
Yoda continues his attack on Palpatine alone. Suddenly his ears go flat as he senses the deaths of his students in the Jedi Temple. Yoda backs away from heavy fighting. Sensing victory Palpatine continues attacking with Force Lightening.
Yoda’s grief turns to anger. Yoda harnesses all the energy from Palpatine’s assault and appears ready to unleash a deeply humming blue/black ball of pure energy upon the Sith Lord. Palpatine stops his onslaught and, for a brief moment, fears the diminutive Jedi Knight.
Yoda hesitates.
PALPATINE
Do it. Turning the great Yoda was beyond my grandest ambition.
The ball of energy shrinks in Yoda’s hand and disappears.
Yoda, visibly exhausted from the ordeal and breathing deeply, stands over Obi-Wan who is slowly recovering. Artoo can be seen leaving the tower.
YODA
Only the Chosen One can defeat the Sith. The Chosen One neither of us is.
Obi-Wan nods as he shakily comes to his feet. He pulls Anakin’s lightsaber from his belt but does not activate it. Bail Organa, kneeling at Padmé’s side only a few meters away, senses that his only cover is about to leave.
BAIL ORGANA
What about Amidala?
YODA
Dying is she. Leave now you must.
Bail Organa leaves Padmé’s side and goes to cover behind Yoda. Yoda stands guard against an attack from Palpatine as the other two head for the door. As Obi-Wan and Bail Organa reach the door Yoda breaks off and leaves with them. Palpatine smiles triumphantly as they leave. The mood of the music changes. He walks to Padmé.
PALPATINE
(Smiling benevolently.)
You need not worry for them. They’ll escape my troops.
(Looses his smile.)
And they’ll lead me directly to your child.
PADMÉ
(In a hoarse whisper.)
No.
(Pulls on his sleeve.)
No.
Palpatine pulls away smiling benevolently again.
188. EXT. PALPATINE’S TOWER – GROUND FLOOR – DAY
Yoda, Obi-Wan, Bail Organa, and Artoo step outside of the elevator in a rush. Obi-Wan leads with his lightsaber and blocks the remaining clone troopers’ blasts. Yoda, now moving slowly again, knocks a few more into the walls using Force Pushes. Artoo breaks away from the group and whistles. Obi-Wan turns his head to see the droid rolling towards a speeder.
OBI-WAN
This way.
The three enter the speeder and take off with Obi-Wan in control.
189. INT. ALDERAAN – REPUBLIC BASE – JEDI SPEEDER – DAY
The physical exertion is evident upon Yoda’s old face.
BAIL ORGANA
Take the long way around.
190. EXT. ALDERAAN – REPBULIC BASE – DAY
The group manages to get out of the Republic Base without incident. The group circles well around the continuing battle. In the distance Aldera is in flames as stray turbolaser blasts rock the city.
Oddly no stray turbolaser blasts harm the nearby clone troopers watching the carnage.
191. INT. ALDERAAN – OPEN FIELD – JEDI SPEEDER – DAY
A blaster bolt flashes by. The occupants of the speeder duck. Bail Organa looks back.
192. EXT. ALDERAAN – OPEN FIELD – DAY
Behind them several clone troopers on speeder bikes take potshots at the heroes’ speeder.
193. INT. ALDERAAN – OPEN FIELD – JEDI SPEEDER – DAY
Another blast flashes past the vehicles occupants.
OBI-WAN
Oh brilliant.
Artoo makes a triumphant whistle and extends Bail Organa’s blaster to him. He grabs it and begins firing back at the speeders.
194. EXT. ALDERAAN – OPEN FIELD – DAY
The speeder bikes dodge the blasts. One nearly loses control and does lose ground, but continues to pursue.
195. INT. ALDERAAN – OPEN FIELD – JEDI SPEEDER – DAY
BAIL ORGANA
(Turning momentarily to Obi-Wan.)
Head fifteen degrees west.
196. EXT. ALDERAAN – OPEN FIELD – DAY
The Jedi’s speeder makes the correction. It clearly is heading straight into a mountain.
197. INT. ALDERAAN – OPEN FIELD – JEDI SPEEDER – DAY
OBI-WAN
Are you sure you know what you’re doing?
BAIL ORGANA
Yes. Stop.
198. EXT. ALDERAAN – ROCKFACE – DAY
The speeder pulls up to the dead-end. Bail Organa gets out and exposes a hidden control panel.
Behind him Obi-Wan takes out Anakin’s lightsaber and swats away blasts headed for him.
199. EXT. ALDERAAN – OPEN FIELD – DAY
At short distance the clone troopers get off their bikes and start approaching.
200. EXT. ALDERAAN – ROCKFACE – DAY
Bail Organa takes a few more shots to get them to hide behind boulders for a moment. He then goes back to working on the controls. A passage into the mountain is opened. Bail Organa plants his hand and hops back into the speeder.
201. INT. ALDERAAN – OPEN FIELD – JEDI SPEEDER – DAY
Bail Organa finishes his leap into the speeder.
BAIL ORGANA
Better?
OBI-WAN
Much.
202. EXT. ALDERAAN – ROCKFACE – DAY
The speeder enters the opened door.
203. INT. ALDERAAN – SECRET CHAMBER
The chamber is mostly hollowed out rock with a few light panels and support rods. Not far from the entrance is an open topped transport on the end of a monorail.
Obi-Wan, Yoda, and Bail Organa get out of the speeder. Artoo follows behind.
BAIL ORGANA
Hurry. They might have demolition.
They get into the second transport that takes them deeper into the tunnel.
204. INT. ALDERAAN – SECRET CHAMBER – EMERGENCY ESCAPE TRANSPORT
Everything goes dark for a moment before an explosion followed by a sizable fireball engulfs the area they just vacated.
The only illumination afterwards is lamps within the transport.
OBI-WAN
I hope that wasn’t timed.
Lights from overhead lamps within the tunnel illuminate the transport.
BAIL ORGANA
No. Proximity detection. It went off when we reached minimum safe distance. They won’t follow us.
The camera remains stationary as the group continues its travels.
205. EXT. ALDERAAN – ALDERA – DAY
The city is being pummeled by stray blasts, about one every two seconds. The wind has blown the huge plume of smoke from the battlefield onto a section of the city.
A beautiful building that looks vaguely like a cathedral takes a direct hit and explodes into flames.
206. EXT. ALDERAAN – BATTLEFIELD – DAY
The surviving Alderaan soldiers, a few hundred in number, desperately attempt to rush the Republic positions. They were severely decimated in the aerial bombardment and are without anything resembling a plan beyond attack. Two Jedi appear to be leading the charge.
JEDI MASTER QUA-NAM
Push forward! They won’t blast their own troops.
In the background the continuing bombardment makes one wonder how even this many soldiers have survived for the final push.
207. EXT. ALDERAAN BATTLEFIELD – DAY
Thousands of clone troopers wait safely as the Alderaan soldiers approach. They have their weapons pointed at the severely outnumbered enemy.
The Alderaan troops are very close.
CLONE TROOPER
Fire.
All at once a thousand blasts head outwards. It seems impossible that anyone could survive such a concentrated attack.
208. INT. ALDERAAN – REPUBLIC BASE – REPUBLIC COMMAND POST – DAY
In the Republic Command Post General Phled stands watching the light show.
Over the com a clone trooper’s voice is heard.
CLONE TROOPER
Sir, pacification is complete.
GENERAL PHLED
Very good commander. Prepare medical teams and soldiers to search for survivors. If you find any with lightsabers you are ordered to execute them on sight. They’re too dangerous to be taken prisoner. Understood?
CLONE TROOPER
Yes sir.
209. EXT. ALDERAAN – ALDERAAN DEFENSE FORCE BASE – DAY
One final blast strikes the ground and the assault is over. Black smoke billows out from the main target zones. The snow has melted in the area around the blast site.
The clone troopers move in. Not much is left. There are only a few survivors, all of which are injured, including Chewbacca.
WIPE SCENE
210. INT. ALDERAAN – ROYAL FAMILY SECRET BUNKER
The bunker is surprisingly bright for being underground. Dark and light gray trimming over a red background are the colors of the installation. In the background a window into a playroom shows the royal family children playing, completely oblivious to the destruction that just ended above their heads.
Tian Organa is in the main room, which happens to be the nursery, aware of the destruction that has gone on, but in the dark on the causes and the fate of her husband.
See-Threepio puts a blanket on baby Luke.
The door opens to the less lit transportation hub. Bail Organa is at the doorway and rushes to embrace Tian.
TIAN ORGANA
Oh, thank the Prophets.
In the background Yoda and Obi-Wan are still getting out of the transport. Artoo follows. Obi-Wan looks old even next to Yoda. For the first time the lasting effects of Dooku’s lightsaber slicing through his femur are truly seen via a slight, but noticeable, limp. They approach the couple as they disengage.
TIAN ORGANA
(To Bail Organa.)
What happened?
OBI-WAN
(Somewhat bitterly.)
We walked into a trap.
BAIL ORGANA
The Chancellor’s a Sith Lord.
OBI-WAN
And apparently so is my former apprentice.
Artoo rolls out and lets out a bleep. In the background Threepio straightens up.
Obi-Wan sits down.
OBI-WAN
I should never have made that promise to Qui-Gon.
(To Yoda.)
You were right. A former slave shouldn’t have been accepted at such an age. His anger was almost destined to be turned to evil.
With that Artoo lets out an angry whistle and charges Obi-Wan. His electric arc welder extends and zaps Obi-Wan in the thigh as he stands up and tries to retreat from the crazed electronically cursing droid.
THREEPIO
Artoo stop! He doesn’t understand.
Yoda notices Threepio’s strange words.
Artoo continues to attack Obi-Wan, actually backing him into a corner. Obi-Wan lightly Force Pushes him away for a moment but Artoo just comes back again. Finally Obi-Wan takes Anakin’s lightsaber out and prepares to cut Artoo into two pieces.
YODA
Stop.
The forcefulness of the command brings both Artoo and the slightly foolish looking Obi-Wan to a halt.
THREEPIO
Oh, thank the Maker. I must apologize for Artoo. Stress will sometimes fry the logic subroutines of his mod-
YODA
Understand what, do we not?
THREEPIO
Oh. It appears that Artoo has a message for Madame Padmé from Master Anakin. Perhaps we should wait for her?
A heartbeat of silence.
OBI-WAN
Play the message Artoo.
Obi-Wan takes a knee as the rest look on. Anakin’s body appears. In the background Tian Organa lowers the lights.
Unlike the confident combatant Obi-Wan had recently faced, this Anakin appears sad and scared.
ANAKIN
Padmé, I don’t know what you think of me right now, but I’m guessing it isn’t good. If all has gone well Alderaan has surrendered to Palpatine’s New Order and I’ve just jumped to hyperspace along with the rest of the Republic Fleet.
Obi-Wan’s features fall at this.
ANAKIN
The truth is worse than anyone realizes. Palpatine is the Master Sith Lord. He’s worked both sides to make himself the most powerful Chancellor ever. If he’s not destroyed soon nothing will stop him from dissolving the Republic and crowning himself Emperor.
Yoda looks on with interest.
ANAKIN
Palpatine’s given orders that the Alderaan resistance be wiped out if any assassination attempt is made. I’m sorry if I acted like a traitor, but Palpatine would have used any excuse to decimate Aldera. Our only hope is to use his strategy against him and let him believe he’s won. Once the fleet is out of orbit Alderaan should be safe.
Bail Organa looks on as Tian stands beside him.
ANAKIN
If you still trust me, I need you to get into contact with Master Obi-Wan or any other member of the Jedi Council immediately and have them evacuate the Jedi Temple.
Yoda looks even more intense as the fate of his students is discussed.
ANAKIN
Palpatine orders included its destruction if he was attacked again. Three hours after we break orbit I will kill the Chancellor and that order will be followed.
(Pauses.)
These are my last words to you my love. I don’t expect to be taken into custody and I won’t take any more lives to save my own.
In shame Obi-Wan is looking down.
ANAKIN
(Looks slightly down.)
I was created for one purpose. I fooled myself into believing I could be a Jedi and then your husband and a father. Deep down I’ve always known neither was my destiny.
(Looks up.)
I’m so scared Padmé. I don’t want to die. I’ve been fighting who I was meant to be most of my life, but I can’t ignore this. Not anymore. I’m the only person with the power and will that he trusts enough to let near him. I pray you can forgive me for breaking all of my promises and leaving you. Of all my mistakes loving you is the only one I can’t bring myself to regret. Goodbye.
The room is silent. Yoda sits in sad contemplation. Bail Organa has gone numb. Tian Organa has tears rolling down her cheeks. Obi-Wan’s face is hidden, but a single teardrop goes almost unseen.
From the playroom a child’s laugh is heard.
WIPE SCENE
211. INT. ALDERAAN – PALPATINE’S TOWER – DAY
A close-up of Padmé’s dying face. The only sound is the humming of Obi-Wan’s lightsaber. Her eyes look straight forward. She’s having difficulty breathing and won’t last much longer.
A shadow crosses over her. It’s Anakin. He’s on his hand and knees. His breathing is even worse than Padmé’s, wet and shallow. His hair is wet from the blood still pouring from the wound on his head. He’s used his arm to wipe the blood from his forehead, leaving a streak of blood on the left side of his head and drops on and around his nose.
ANAKIN
It’s okay. I’m here.
Anakin lies down next to her and fondles her hair with his one hand. Padmé focuses on him for a moment but can’t speak.
ANAKIN
Please don’t go.
Padmé reaches out and brushes his bruised cheek. The camera focuses on her hand and Anakin’s face as she touches him. Her hand falls limp.
Anakin closes his eyes and rolls over to his back. Tears roll down his face as he looks straight up.
Soon he looks at Obi-Wan’s still open lightsaber. His anguished face contorts in anger. The Emperor’s theme hits as a low thrum is heard. Obi-Wan’s lightsaber is shown in a close-up. Suddenly it explodes into hundreds of pieces.
The music stops as Anakin’s anger is spent. He rolls back over, his breathing even worse than before. The bass of his breath is turned up noticeably. He lays his head upon Padmé’s chest and prepares for death.
This moment lasts several seconds until the door is heard opening. The camera remains focused on Anakin’s face as two medics begin treatment.
MEDIC 1
(Checking a scanning device.)
She’s gone.
MEDIC 2
Then help me with this one.
MEDIC 1
Look at these injuries. How’s he alive?
As the medics fight to save his life Anakin only weakly clutches Padmé’s dead body with his remaining hand.
The voices of the two medics fade as Palpatine leans over the only semi-lucid Anakin.
PALPATINE
You see now. The lies of the Jedi. Join me and we’ll put an end to these petty wars and disorder. Join me and I’ll show you your true potential. Only your enemies will suffer.
ANAKIN
(Barely conscious.)
…child…
PALPATINE
I’m locating him now. He’s been hidden from me, but the Jedi will not be allowed to escape this planet. Now rest my friend. You have much to mourn and much to consider.
Anakin falls to unconsciousness as the medics continue to work.
212. INT. ALDERAAN – ROYAL FAMILY SECRET BUNKER
Obi-Wan is still on his knee thinking about his student. Yoda stands near him. Tian Organa is taking care of the children. Bail Organa is out of the room.
Obi-Wan lifts his head and opens his eyes.
OBI-WAN
Anakin?
YODA
Feel him as well I do. Still alive is he.
OBI-WAN
He’s in pain.
YODA
Despair, anger, betrayal. Yes, terrible pain.
OBI-WAN
He needs help.
YODA
Done more than enough we have. Decide for himself he must, whether to complete his task or fail.
OBI-WAN
Do you believe he will?
YODA
(Firmly.)
No.
Mindful of what his interference has already done Obi-Wan does not argue with Yoda’s wisdom. But he does become restless.
Bail Organa enters the room.
BAIL ORGANA
We need to get the two of you off planet. We’re safe for now, but half the Republic Army is looking for you.
YODA
Hmm. Not us they are looking for. Allowed us to escape Sidious did.
BAIL ORGANA
Who then?
OBI-WAN
The children. If Anakin fails they’re his greatest threat.
BAIL ORGANA
They’re four days old how can they possibly-
OBI-WAN
Prophecies are vague. If it wasn’t truly Anakin’s destiny to bring Balance to the Force, he may have left us the method.
YODA
Train them from the proper age we cannot. Wait until they can protect themselves we must. Dangerous this will be.
OBI-WAN
I don’t see another way.
Obi-Wan gets up and walks to the cribs.
BAIL ORGANA
Hold on. Are you saying that we wait for twenty years?
OBI-WAN
I’m sorry my friend, but your opportunity of hope is gone.
BAIL ORGANA
And there very well may never be another one in my lifetime.
OBI-WAN
So we make one. And when the time comes we’ll need all the allies we can find. I’m afraid we must leave that work to you.
YODA
And buy, you must, the freedom to do so.
BAIL ORGANA
You want me to publicly support the New Order.
OBI-WAN
That won’t be enough. Palpatine will want complete submission. You’ll need to disarm.
BAIL ORGANA
We’ll be at his mercy.
OBI-WAN
Look around you. You’re already at his mercy. That fleet over your planet is only going to get larger and more powerful. Commanded by officers from this new Academy.
BAIL ORGANA
All the more reason to resist now. If every planet-
OBI-WAN
What planets? The ones independent enough to leave the Republic? We broke them. Remember admiral? You, me, the Jedi. Because they were following the wrong Sith.
Obi-Wan finds that he’s taken steps closer to Bail Organa. Bail Organa is blinking slowly as he digests the slap of cold reality he’s just received. Tian Organa has stepped into the room to see what’s going on. One of the babies is crying.
Obi-Wan backs off.
OBI-WAN
I’m sorry.
Obi-Wan sits again.
YODA
Correct is Obi-Wan. Waste more lives you should not. Do this correctly we will. Or not at all.
BAIL ORGANA
(Nods and speaks softly.)
I agree.
YODA
The children. Separate them we should.
Tian Organa’s attention is caught. A bit of telepathy plays between her and her husband.
BAIL ORGANA
Leia can stay here.
YODA
Wise is that?
BAIL ORGANA
I can claim her as an orphan found in the battle zone. We’ll raise her as our own. A little symbol of healing.
YODA
Why Leia?
TIAN ORGANA
I’ve always wanted a daughter.
OBI-WAN
Anakin has family on Tatooine. No one knows about them. It’s beyond the Republic and controlled by the Hutts. Luke might be safe there.
YODA
Too dangerous. Look for him there someone will. Suspicious of Leia they might be as well.
BAIL ORGANA
They’ll only look for one. Almost no one knew there were twins. Right?
OBI-WAN
No. Not even Anakin.
BAIL ORGANA
Perfect. If we can get a hold of everyone who knows: my staff, Amidala’s doctor, her family; it should stay that way.
Artoo whistles to get their attention.
YODA
Wiped these droids memories should be.
THREEPIO
Memory wipe? Oh dear.
Artoo rolls up to Threepio and gives a soothing whistle. Yoda gives Artoo an approving nod for his sacrifice.
OBI-WAN
Palpatine will still look for one of them.
BAIL ORGANA
(Smiles.)
Leave that to me.
Bail Organa leaves the room. Obi-Wan picks up Luke and he and Yoda follow Bail Organa out of the room.
WIPE SCENE
213. EXT. ALDERAAN – MOUNTAIN VALLEY – DAY
On a beautiful stretch of land the ground splits causing dirt to fall into an opening hole in the ground. Just as it becomes apparent that a ship is under the ground it launches from its hidden hangar.
214. INT. ALDERAAN – THE SKY – GETAWAY SHIP – DAY
Within the cockpit, Yoda is in the pilot’s seat almost meditating. They are still within Alderaan’s atmosphere but are moving quickly out of it. They pass the last cloud.
OBI-WAN
Coming up on their sentry ships.
Through the window one of the Star Destroyer analogs begins firing at the smaller ship.
215. EXT. ALDERAAN – UPPER ATMOSPHERE – DAY
As the getaway ship leaves the atmosphere the incoming fire intensifies, but many of the shots miss above the ship. This herds the getaway ship towards the Star Destroyer analog.
216. INT. AVENGING STAR – BRIDGE
Captain Neirean is speaking to a hologram of Palpatine.
PALPATINE
Do not destroy them captain. I want that ship disabled and its crew brought to me.
CAPTAIN NEIREAN
Yes Chancellor. It shall be as you order.
Neirean bows to Palpatine as his hologram fades. Neirean turns to his gunners.
CAPTAIN NEIREAN
Disabling shots only. I want that ion cannon on-line.
CREWMAN
Yes sir.
217. EXT. ALDERAAN – SPACE
The Star Destroyer analog is pouring shots at the tiny ship’s shields. Very few shots are directly aimed at the ship itself.
218. INT. ALDERAAN – SPACE – GETAWAY SHIP
Blasts impact the shields all around the ship. In the background Luke is heard crying.
OBI-WAN
Port shields are gone.
Suddenly Yoda spins the ship so that they are now flying “upside down”.
YODA
Strap in you should. Almost ready are we.
219. INT. AVENGING STAR – BRIDGE
CAPTAIN NEIREAN
Fire ion cannon.
220. INT. ALDERAAN – SPACE – GETAWAY SHIP
Yoda is briefly shown in a meditative state.
221. EXT. ALDERAAN – SPACE – GETAWAY SHIP
An exploding bolt is set off behind Yoda and Obi-Wan’s ship.
222. EXT. ALDERAAN – SPACE
The ion cannon fires at the small ship. The moment the ion blast reaches the ship there’s an explosion and Yoda and Obi-Wan’s ship is gone.
223. INT. ALDERAAN – SPACE – GETAWAY SHIP
The ship has jumped to hyperspace.
Obi-Wan breathes a sigh of relief.
OBI-WAN
It worked.
YODA
Hmm. Not completely abandoned us, has the Force.
Obi-Wan unstraps from his seat and goes back to check on Luke.
WIPE SCENE
224. INT. HOSPITAL ROOM
The hospital room is completely done in black and white. The only color comes from a bacta tank in the corner, and the pink somehow only adds to the sickliness of the place. The lack of windows means there’s no indication if this room is on a ship or on Alderaan.
Anakin rests upright. He is almost completely in the Darth Vader costume. The only elements missing are the helmet and the cape. A tracheal tube aids his breathing. Several sensors are placed on his face. He is also shaved bald. The wound to his head has been closed but the massive scar will remain in its place for the rest of his life. At first it appears he’s unconscious, but he soon opens his eyes when he senses visitors.
Palpatine is in the room on the other side of a sheet of glass along with Captain Neirean.
PALPATINE
My friend. I’m afraid I bring unfortunate news. Captain Neirean.
CAPTAIN NEIREAN
(Nervous.)
My ship attempted to intercept a small ship believed to be piloted by the rogue Jedi. My gunners tried to disable the ship, but destroyed it by mistake. I’m sorry Chancellor.
PALPATINE
A simple error. Shall we forgive him?
Anakin’s eyes narrow. He lifts his black-gloved hand and slowly makes an underhanded grasping fist. Captain Neirean’s eyes widen and his hands go to his throat as his windpipe constricts. Soon the man falls dead.
Palpatine smiles at the display.
WIPE SCENE
225. INT – ALDERAAN – ALDERA – ARTIQUE PALACE – DAY
The final theme plays through a montage of scenes.
Dadonna and the young Senator Mon Mothma meet with Bail Organa. Tian Organa is in the background caring for Leia.
226. EXT. DAGOBAH – DAY
Yoda is dropped off at Dagobah. He looks around at his new home.
227. EXT. CORELLIA – SPACE – ORBITAL SHIPYARDS
A group of wookies, including Chewbacca, is used as slave labor in the Corellian shipyards. Many wookies have singed fur. Masters with electrified whips stand nearby.
228. INT. NABOO – OTOH GUNGA
Jar Jar Binks returns to his underwater home. Humans are being forcibly placed into bongos.
229. EXT. TATOOINE – MOS ESPA – DAY
Obi-Wan’s ship flies into view on Tatooine. As the camera pans Watto comes into focus looking forlorn. As Watto follows the ship with his eyes Boba Fett comes into view with a gun pointed at Watto. Watto disappears as the camera continues to pan with Obi-Wan’s ship. Boba Fett fires his weapon.
230. INT. CORUSCANT – LOW RENT APARTMENTS – NIGHT
A resistance cell is busted up by stromtroopers. The camera finds a sketch of the Rebel Alliance Crest as the Rebels are shot.
231. INT. AQUALESH – PLAUGH’S OFFICE – NIGHT
Dr. Plaugh is taken out of his office at gunpoint.
232. INT. TATOOINE – LARS HOMESTEAD
Obi-Wan hands Luke over to Owen and Beru. Owen looks mistrustful of Obi-Wan and the danger he’s been put in. Beru happily takes the infant.
233. EXT. TATOOINE – LARS HOMESTEAD - DAY
Obi-Wan walks alone into the desert. He passes Shmi’s grave. A freshly dug grave is next to it.
The ghost of Qui-Gon materializes briefly, and fades into nothingness.
234. INT. CORUSCANT – THRONE ROOM
Darth Vader slowly walks through a dark but opulent throne room passing several guards along the way. He kneels before the Emperor as the music stops. Only his breathing can be heard.
