PHANTOM PAILEY (2002)
Top |

Directed by Biju Varkey
Music by Deva
Lyrics by Girish Putenchery
Songs Sung by Yesudas, Chithra, Sujatha, Madhu Balakrishanan,
Jayachandran, SPB etc...
Audio Label: Esel Digi Audios
Mammooty is back as action hero in Phantom
Pailey. No two ways about it, debutant Biju Varkey has come out
with a decent entertainer. The camera work of the other debutant
Biju Viswanathan is eye catching especially the way he has
captured the lush green Munnar valley.
Phantom Pailey - Mammotty, Innocent
The story is set in a hill town where landslips and earthquakes
are quiet common. The villagers are used to these natural
calamities and following their complaint, to prevent such frequent
earthquakes Government puts a court order that quarry work should
be stopped immediately. The contractor who mints money out of the
quarry, Annachi (Manivannan) and his people are at loggerheads
with the local people who are led by Gandhi Pillai (Nedumudi Venu)
and the Church priest (Innocent). Josekutty (Nishant Sagar) is a
budding artiste and he is in love with Pillai’s niece Hema. When
Jose goes to Hyderabad for a competition, his elder brother Pailey
(Mammootty) comes to the town from Mumbai to get him married to
Hema. Pailey, is a stunt or a dupe for Bollywood actors and due to
his daredevil fights, he is known as Phantom (!). In no time he
wins over the villagers and cross swords with the baddies! Soon
Annachi brings a corrupt Police officer Sebastin (Manoj.K.Jayan),
who is a sadist and a lawbreaker who is a constant nuisance for
the villagers and Pailey is his main target. With the help of
Annachi, Sebastin murders Josekutty and then it is pay back time
for Phantom Pailey.
Mammootty is a sort of Arnold Schwarzenegger- One Man Army, who
cleans up a village. Surprisingly he has done a decent job and
even his comedy scenes are enjoyable. Innocent as the priest,
Cochin Haneefa, Bindu Panickkar and Lalu Alex are great in comedy
scenes. The heroine, Malavika has very little to do with hardly
three scenes. Manoj K.Jayan as the clean-shaven villain police
officer is a revelation. Songs tuned by Deva are a big let down.
On the whole, till interval the film is fast paced but the second
half is a bit dragging and has a contrived climax, which lessens
the tempo.

RAKSHASA RAJAVU (2001)
Top |
Directed by Vinayan
Produced by Sargam Kabeer
Music by Mohan Sithara
Lyrics by S Rameshan Nair, Vinayan
Songs sung by Yesudas, MG Sreekumar, Chithra, Sriram, Smitha,
Ashwathi Vijayan, Aneesha
Starring: Mammotty, Dileep, Harisree Ashokan, Indrans, Rajan P.
Dev, Kalabhavan Mani, Sai Kumar, Janardanan, Cochin Hanifa, Capt.
Raju, Saddique, Spadikam George, Machan Vargeese, Meena, Kavya
Madhavan, Manya, Sukumari
Rakshasa Rajavu-it is yet another Vinayan
magic. Vinayan has proved his in born talent to read the
minds of the audience once again.
The central character an IPS officer played by Mammootty is a
two-in -one person who is noble like Raman in his official
capacity and strict and harsh like a Rakshasa to the opponents.
Ramanathan is presented as a police officer, who accepts bribe to
save culprits and the bribe money is for the funds of the
orphanage chain that he owns.
Rakshasa Rajavu
Mammootty, as usual, has performed his role excellently, giving
cent percent justice to his character, proving there's nobody else
to do police roles this much effectively. Mammootty surely had
managed to deliver the pulse raising dialogues with punch, which
is his trademark. In the meantime he looked uncomfortable in
certain scenes-especially in action scenes and some reacting
scenes and this uneasiness is so striking at certain moments of
the film.
Dileep plays Mammootty's close associate. Vinayan missed the
popularity that might've got for this picture by not using the
skills of Dileep effectively. Is it done purposely for increasing
the image of Mammooty?
As constable Pathrose Harishree Ashokan scores loads of applause.
Kalabhavan Mani hams on throughout the movie and is at times nerve
wrecking. Rajan P Dev's character has nothing new for him as he
has been doing such roles right from the beginning of his career.
Also, there was not much for any one of the three heroines - Meena,
Manya or Kavya to do. Kavya plays opposite Dileep.
The songs composed by Mohan Sithara have already become hit among
the audience.
The theme of the film is good, but only up to a certain point.
After that, Rakshasa Rajavu turns out to be just another masala
movie. Of course, there is neither a meaning nor a logic in the
story. But Vinayan could erase all those drawbacks with his unique
style. More than Mammootty's star value, it's Vinayan's dynamic
style of presentation of the story that helped this 'story-less'
movie a popular one.
