A Web Site on Icelandic Heraldry

The purpose of this web site is to make available information on Icelandic heraldry, which is not very easy to find for several reasons.

Firstly, the heraldic tradition in Iceland has never been strong, and since the country became a republic in 1944 a peculiar strain has developed with the municipal arms in Iceland more often looking like pictures of the places they represent than traditional European arms. Usually they are drawn by artistic locals or advertising agencies.

Secondly, there is no heraldic authority in Iceland, so the country resembles America more in that respect than other European countries. Anything goes.

There is also a small collection of links, mostly related to Scandinavian heraldry, but also to some other sites of interest. I hope you will enjoy your visit.
