EnglishContrasted has been produced in order to give students of the English language a chance to explore the regional variations of the language and to learn about the culture of English speaking countries through the texts of native speakers. This site will help students identify distinctive characteristics of regional speech, which is becoming increasingly important as the number of people choosing English as their second-language increases. No single country can claim to dominate the English language. As English continues to diversify, students will benefit by being able to recognize and understand various accents and rhythms of speech. Begin your tour by going to the World of English page. Native speakers of each region listed have recorded files allowing us compare their accents. To go directly to a specific country, click on the countries listed on the left to learn to hear a sample and read a transcript of their regional variation. As this site develops, more samples can be included to compare additional accent variations. I will appologize now for not being able to include more accents from the outset. In the future, I would like this site to include viewers' opinions on how different accents are perceived. If you have an accent you would like to add to EnglishContrasted, please email a sound file of your voice to mafjrcall@yahoo.com. Please also include in the email where the speaker is from, their name, and email address. |
