A triathlon involves:
| swimming..... | ....then cycling.... | ....then running |
|---|---|---|
Triathlon races cover a whole range of distances.
The Olympic distance triathlon involves a
1.5K swim, a 40K bike and a 10K run.
Many triathlons are half this length. Sprint distance triathlons usually start with a
400-750m swim followed by a
20K bike and a 5K run.
Don't be put off if this sounds a little daunting, though. There are also novice races (eg 250m swim, 9K bike, 2K run) which are specially aimed at first-timers.
Don't be put off if this all sounds too easy, either. A traditional "Ironman" race starts off with a 2.4 mile swim before a 112 mile bike ride..... And it finishes with a marathon! But we generally leave those races to the mad psycho triathletes....
There are also duathlons, either run-bike-runs or swim-runs (see below!)
Haven't got a bike?
Lots of people worry because they haven't got a high-tech, lightweight, ultra-amazing racing
bike. Don't worry if this is the case because loads of people do triathlons on a whole
range of bikes. Bikes with baskets on the front have been spotted, and there's always lots
of people on mountain bikes.
If you want to miss out the bike bit altogether, you could always do a swim-run duathlon.
Not a confident swimmer?
Don't worry! Most runners aren't natural swimmers. At every race there's always a lot of
people doing breaststroke, backstroke, side stroke, or a combination of all of them.
If you can make if through the first bit, you'll manage the rest!
