Football Still on Track at Detroit Mercy
There was a long silence after the
University of Detroit Mercy renovated Titan Stadium in 2007, to be used for soccer, track, and lacrosse.  The original drawing of the project (below) included football goal posts.

Frequently Asked Questions
100th Drake Relays Has Roots in Football
Back in 1910, John L. Griffith was Drake's athletic director and football coach.  He started an outdoor track meet as a way to keep athletes in shape during the off-season.  A century later, the
Drake Relays is a popular annual event, drawing high school athletes from Iowa and collegians from across the United States and Canada.

So as you watch the Relays on
ESPN2, consider what you would be missing if Drake had hired a different football coach.

The new field (pictured above) appeared with football yard markers.  Yet UDM made no further public comment about football for over a year.

Then came the
NCAA Final Four, for which UDM was the host school.  The Detroit Free Press reported that following the tournament, Athletic Director Keri Gaither would be focused "on getting the school's planned, non-scholarship football program off the ground."

No timeline was given, but UDM's first moves will be to hire a head coach and install adequate seating.  Lights are also planned for the stadium.

The Titans are expected to join the PFL.

Interest at Mercer and Xavier
Mercer University may have fallen behind UDM's schedule, but the Macon, Ga. school is still considering a nonscholarship football team.  A planned December 2008 Board of Trustees vote on football was postponed so that more information could be gathered.

The timing of starting a team at Mercer will depend on fundraising for a combined stadium/fieldhouse project.  They will need to raise about $20 million.

Xavier University started a club team in 2006, and no plans have been announced to field an NCAA squad.  However, there are rumors that alumni have pledged $5 million (so far) for startup costs.  If they started a program, Dayton's Atlantic 10 rival would be a good bet for the PFL.
