July, 4 2003 should see the opening of the new constitution center between 5th and 6th on Arch street. While most Libertarian Party members may be happy to see the completion of this shrine to the constitution, I say this building and the entire Federal occupation of Philadelphia historic sites is an abomination. Notable is this press release from George Getz, Press Secretary of the National Libertarian Party in 1998. In the usual sarcastic tone of these releases Getz criticizes the wasteful spending and ignorance of Congress. Missing is any mention of the criminal act of the State building a shrine to itself on confiscated property, and paid for with stolen money(taxation). It would be admirable if the State could heed some lessen from a better understanding of the constitution, designed as a restriction on power - which is now almost totally ignored, but the State will never limit itself. In fact if the Federal State wishes to educate its subjects about the nature of government, then a walk around Independence Hall provides and excellent education. If one were cynical (I admit, I am) one would think that the Federal troops are providing a preview of times to come in the form of a Police State. The two block area around Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell has been cordoned off since September 11, 2001. Chestnut Street in front of the Hall is completely closed; the area is entirely surrounded by metal fencing, patrolled by solders; and one must summit to illegal searches for admittance to the sites. The founders of this nation would be appalled, statists though they were. The Federal government should withdrawal its occupation forces and illegal claim of jurisdiction from the entire area they ironically call Independence Historic Park. Museums should be privatly owned and funded. Private security firms would protect the private property of the sites from damage and attack at least as well as the State. |
